In the Cayman Islands we take fresh running water straight from the tap for granted. We assume we will all have working toilets in our homes. We are the lucky ones – even in developed countries such as the United States there are issues with water and sanitation – Flint, Michigan has been in the news recently. In many countries schools and healthcare facilities lack access to water and sanitation making basic hygiene impossible and increasing the likelihood of the spread of disease.
As we turn on our taps and flush our toilets here are a few facts to consider:
1 in 10 people lack access to safe water.
1 in 3 people lack access to a toilet – more people have a mobile phone than a toilet.
Women and children spend 125 million hours a day collecting water.
Every 90 seconds a child dies from a water related disease.
These are sobering facts – please do your part to conserve water and support Rotary water projects around the globe.

A Kickin' Success at the 2016 Hearts and Homeruns Rotaract Kickball Tournament Submitted by Secretary Martha Connolly
Fun was had by all at the 6thAnnual Hearts and Homeruns Fundraiser organised by our Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman. The event started at 3:30pm on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon at the Field of Dreams and after the rules were given and the handicaps explained, it was time to play ball!
Pres. Matthew was dubbed "Chef Matthew" for the event and grilled an awesome burger for all in attendance. Rotaractor Brooks collected $1 donations from persons wanting to sabotage another person. Once the $1 donation was made, you selected a strip of paper and then assigned what ever the strip said (the handicap) to who you wanted to sabotage. These sabotages included throwing the ball backwards, throwing the ball between your legs, running backwards to first base or having to do a dance every time the ball was thrown.
Rotarian Michelle had a sabotage by having to use her left foot to kick the ball. Director Jerrell didn't get a sabotage but there was talk of someone wanting to give him one. And if the $1 handicap that wasn't bad enough, a person could pay $2 and make up their own sabotage.....President Matt made use of this option a lot which made the game even more fun to watch.
There was stealing of bases, foul kick balls and even a few slides to the plates with one player needing a bandage for his bloody knee (he took it like a trooper though and was back in the game in no time).
Music was playing, drinks were poured, laughter was in the air and the game was so much fun to watch. I don't know in the end who won but I can surely say I look forward to next year's event!

Our Earlyact Club Kids Learn About Fire Safety and a
Water Project organised by Rotaract Blue Submitted by Youth Committee
In keeping with our water theme, this month's Earlyact Club had the opportunity to to hear how water can be lifesaving, not just in our bellies, but on our homes. Mr. John Christian from the Cayman Islands Fire Service talked to the kids about fire safety. Some of the topics included dousing flames with water that their trucks carry, along with other safety measures used to prevent possible tragedy. Rotaractors Tapi and President Alice Ramos from Rotaract Blue also spoke to the kids about a water project they are organising and how they can get involved. Our Earlyactors are an active bunch and we would love for more Sunrise Rotarians to get involved. They meet every other Wednesday from 1:15pm - 1:50pm at the GT Primary School Music Room. Their next meeting is set for March 9th.

We all join Rotary for several reasons, however, the top two reasons are get involved in their communities and to meet new people. Many of our friends, colleagues and family are looking for the same things. So what about inviting them to help with one of our service projects, attend a social function or attend one of our Wednesday meetings and let them see for themselves how Rotary attempts to make positive change in our community and the world at large.
Here are some potential candidates to consider for membership:

Business and professional acquaintances
Younger community leaders who are already connected to Rotary through Rotaract, RYLA, Youth Exchange, and other youth programs
Are you on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, snapchat etc? then why not use social media to attract members and share information about Rotary Sunrise. If we promote positive images on our social media pages it will also encourage our friends/ followers to ask questions about how to become involved.

Make-ups: In addition to make-up opportunities at Rotary Sunrise, you can make up absences at another Club in Grand Cayman. The meeting times and places for the other Clubs are:

Meets Tuesdays 7:30pm at the GT Yacht Club Restaurant.
Rotaract Blue:

If members are unable to make a regular weekly meeting or Rotary event, make-ups can be done online. The e-Club website is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You just need to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on the site and answer some questions to get the make up certificate.
Traveling: If you are going to be traveling for an extended period of time (more than two weeks), be sure to let the Secretary know and remember to submit any make-ups you do in a timely manner.
