Thank you to everyone who volunteered/took part in the Scrabble Scrum – it was a great success! Congratulations to team KPMG who were the worthy Champions with a huge 2,686 point score! Carey Olsen came in second place with a score of 2,400 points and Campbells came in third place with a score of 2,332 points.
The best news is that we raised a grand total of CI$6,712 for LIFE from the event! A big thank you to all our Judges/Word Waiters (it was a tough job!) and a special thank you to our wonderful MC (and the inspiration behind the Scrabble Scrum), Patrick. Also a special mention about the Rotaract volunteers who did a fantastic job, as always, thank you everyone!
Sunrise Shows Support at RCGC Meeting Submitted by Secretary Gina
A record attendance by Sunrise Rotarians occurred at the Rotaract Club meeting on Thursday, September 11 with 7 Rotarians in total answering President Kim's call for continued support of our Rotaract Grand Cayman club. This is a record attendance by Sunrise Rotarians this year and it is wonderful to have it occur during New Generations month. Including President Kim, a special thank you is extended to PP Andrea, Rotarians Faye Lippitt, Gina McBryan, Deirdre McFarlane, David Reid and Pat Steward. Please continue to support our Rotaractors and help build relationships, get to know what service projects they support and build those connections for a healthy future for both our clubs.
Please note, as RCGC will be taking over the Sunrise meeting this Wednesday, there will not be a Rotaract club meeting on Thursday, September 18 but please do come to the Wednesday meeting and make plans to visit them at Overtime Sports Bar on Thursday, September 25 at 7am.
Rotarians at Work at RCGC Road Side Clean Up Submitted by Secretary Gina
A big thank you to all the Rotarians who came out last Saturday morning to participate in the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman Road Side clean up. We picked up mattresses, an old television, washing machine, sorted plastic bottles, glass and aluminum for recycling and enjoyed each other's company while making our island a little more beautiful.
Childrens Clothes & Toothpaste request for Guaruma
Submitted by International Committee
Thank you to all those who have donated items for the International Committee upcoming trip to Guaruma, Honduras. As the time is drawing nearer to the departure date of September 26th, there is still a need for a few items. We kindly request any donations of childrens clothes and toothpaste. Please bring your donations to the next meeting or the meeting on the 24th or contact Rotarian Patricia Steward to make other arrangements.
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Completed
Submitted by Secretary Gina
As you may recall, Rotaract Blue had originally challenged us to complete this task by September 17 as part of a small international fundraising awareness to raise funds for ALS. Seven Sunrisers stepped up to the challenge to represent the Sunrise club. Special thank you to President Kim and Rotarians Daniel Lee, Pat Steward, Faye Lippitt, Gina McBryan, Deirdre McFarlane and Dawn Cummings. We all actually enjoyed cooling off after the sweaty road side clean up. Special thank you to Rotaract Grand Cayman members who were happy to assist with the chilly ice bucket release onto the Rotarians – Ileana Ebanks, Pierre Connolly, Stephanie Rattan, Mikhail Campbell, and prospective member Joel Porter. In addition the ladies behind the cameras – Rotarian Susan Fraser and prospective Rotaract member Rebecca Doxey-Gonez.
As this is a fundraiser to support Rotaract Blue's international project, they have asked for a donation of CI$10 for those who participated in the challenge and CI$25 from those who did not. I will have a collection bucket in circulation during the September 17 club meeting for any donations toward this cause so please bring extra cash. Collected funds will then be dropped off at Rotaract Blue's evening meeting on September 17 at 6pm at the Royal Palms venue.
Dictionary Donation by the Literacy Committee
Submitted by Literacy Committee
The Literacy Committee made donations of English Illustrative Dictionaries to schools across the island in recognition of International Literacy Day. Here are a few photos from those donations to the John Gray High School and Cayman Prep. This project is in its 3rd year and this year, 619 dictionaries will be donated to both public and private schools throughout Cayman.
Membership Update
Submitted by the Membership Committee
We love and appreciate all our Sunrise members, but sometimes life gets in the way and people have to say goodbye.
Please be advised that Rotarian Victor Crumbley has decided to resign from the club but wishes to stay connected as a Friend of Rotary. Rotarian Frans Vandendries has been approved by the board for a 3 month leave of absence up to December 10th and Rotarian Irene Gut has received an extension on her Leave of Absence and wishes to extend warm regards to all her Sunrise friends and looks forward to reconnecting with everyone at the Oct 15th club meeting.
