LIFE High School Scrabble Scrum Fun! Submitted by Literacy Committee & LIFE
Rotary Sunrise and LIFE hosted a Scramble Scrum or high schoolers which was another fun event for all! 4 teams of 6 competed, a junior and senior team from John Gray High School and similarly for St Ignatius High School. The location for the event was kindly hosted by St Ignatius in the Loyola Hall.
John Gray High School won both trophies and each participant in the winning teams (JGHS Scrabble Slammers and JGHS Scrabblenauts) received a gift certificate from Books & Books.
The object of the Scrabble Scrum, in observance of Rotary International's Literacy Month in March, was to promote the fact that being able to spell correctly and know the meaning of words is not only an essential skill, it can also be enjoyable. Of course, teamwork and other skills such as speed and accuracy came into play and the competitive spirit was greatly in evidence.
Many thanks to M/C Pat Kreitlow, Head Judge Su Mander, Rotary Sunrise President Kim, LIFE and Literacy Committee Chairman PP Woody Foster as well as Sunrise Rotarians who acted as Judges and Scorers. RCGC President Stephanie also acted as a Judge.
Other Rotarian Judges/Scorers were PDG Bob Ketron, PP Hendrik, VP Andrea, Hazel Brown, Pauline McGettigan and Greg and Jenny from YMCA Cayman.
Thanks too to the many teachers and parents who came out in support of the children. It was truly fun and we are already looking forward to next year and more schools participating!

Join Us for Charter Night - Celebrating 13 years of Rotary Sunrise Submitted by Fellowship Committee
Charter Night is set for Wednesday, April 15th at Mizu Restaurant, Camana Bay. The event will run from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. This is an opportunity to celebrate our 13th birthday and award those in the community who engage in the same motto as Rotary "Service Above Self".
This is the first time we are holding our Charter Night at Mizu Restaurant and we're told by the Manager, Steve Shienfield that Rotarians will not be disappointed in the selection, quality and quantity of appetizers. The appetizers will be a mixture of menu items from Mizu and Waterfront restaurants.
Cost is CI $25 which covers food and the venue. Alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages can be ordered directly from the bar, and it will be a cash bar.
This is our 13 year anniversary and President Kim would be extremely grateful if you could attend. Sign up by accepting the invite sent by President Kim on March 31st or by emailing Rotarian Dawn Cummings, Fellowship Chair.

Reading Challenge Progress Report from Cayman Brac High School Submitted by Literacy Committee
We received a thank you email and progress report from Librarian/Special Support Aide Irene Scott Thornton from Layman E. Scott High School in Cayman Brac for the library reading challenge for which Rotary Sunrise's Literacy Committee provided $300 for the purchase of prizes.
All of the students were very pleased to receive a gift and the first place winner was ecstatic over the gift certificate he received.
They are very grateful to our club, for our support. Without the donation Sunrise Rotary provides, they would be unable to provide the gifts, which rewards the students for their extra efforts to read outside of school.
First Semester Progress Report — Reading Challenge 2014-2015 “Travel Anywhere Through Books”
Students have checked out books from the library on the subject of countries around the world, and shared what they have learned through an oral report to the Librarian. There have been submitted 7 written reports on various countries. Students names and date of “travel” to the country is then placed on a map pin on the world map bulletin board.
Students have travelled to the following countries, and learned fascinating facts :
Afghanistan
Antarctica
Argentina
Australia
Belize
Brazil
Canada
China
India
Italy
Mexico
Monoco
Panama
Spain
2nd Reading Challenge for Lower Level Readers titled “READ” on any subject resulted in over 15 students participating with 158 recorded books read.
The Rotary Sunrise Club of Grand Cayman, sponsored the prizes for the second consecutive year.
Through our creative library reading challenges, with prizes and award certificates, students are discovering that reading has great rewards, they gain knowledge, which is super powerful in all their educational and lifelong endeavors; and they receive a prize for putting forth the extra effort, outside their normal required reading in English class, to become even more literate.
Thank you,
Irene Scott Thornton
