Visits Cayman Islands
July 19: Cayman Brac
D.G. Dr. Robert Leger and wife Rosa atop the

Rotarians packed his visit when our new District Governor, Dr. Robert Leger arrived for his 3 day tour of the Cayman Islands. With his wife Rosa, they first flew to Cayman Brac where, along with all three Grand Cayman Rotary Presidents, A.G. A.L. Thompson, and several G.C. Rotarians, he toured the island and had a fine dinner meeting with the Brac Rotary Club.
It was a treat to be able to spend even a short time with D.G. Dr. Leger and his wife Rosa last Wednesday. Our Brac Rotary hosts gave us a fine tour of the island, and dinner at Cayman Brac Beach Resort, where members from G.C. Clubs stayed.
DG Robert Leger trained as a surgeon in Mexico City where he practiced for eleven years. He left to return to his home in Haiti where he practiced as a surgeon for more than two dozen years. He was there during the massive magnitude 7 earthquake that flattened buildings in Port-au-Prince and left 1.5 million people homeless in 2010. He was the chief organiser for the many, many doctors, many of them Rotarians, who flew there from around the world to help. Dr. Leger speaks English, French, Spanish and Creole fluently and has a working knowledge of German which surely helped in those early chaotic days. After the earthquake, Robert was at first the only surgeon in his southern city of Les Cayes and was inundated with severe injury cases: devastating chest and internal injuries, as well as crushed bones and amputations that were required in some cases. The hospitals were overwhelmed with victims who had traveled over 5 hours on bus or other vehicles to Les Cayes in hope of receiving care. All medical care was provided free by the two hospitals (which are self-supported) to the patients affected by the earthquake. After working non-stop for 48 hours in surgery,Dr. Leger finally had a break, only to receive the devastating news that he too was a victim of that devastating quake: he had lost his sister who was one of the hundreds of thousands of victims in Port Au Prince.
Dr. Leger’s wife Rosa helps him in his medical laboratory where he continues to practice part time in southern Haiti, and travels with him on his visits in District 7020. She is a past president of their club in Les Cayes and past Assistant Governor.

Brac Rotarian Sheldon, along with RCGC PP John Elliot, who works part time at the Brac, took D.G. Dr. Leger and his wife along with G.C. Rotarians to visit their various projects at the Brac. PIctured above is the library, which they built for the island. Though the club is small, with presently 15 members, it is mighty as they take on such large projects as this one, as well as their Rotary Centennial Park project that includes upkeep of the Lifecourse Exercise Trail they constructed.

D.G. Leger Visits Projects
July 21: Grand Cayman
District Governor Dr. Robert Leger and his wife Rosa were determined to visit all Three Rotary Club projects, as well as Rotaractor projects during his whirlwind visit to the Caymans, July 19 to 22.
Projects toured include: The Bonaventure Boys Home (RCGC); National Gallery Children's Art Project (RCGC); T.E. McField community Center (Central); Centennial Park (Central); Georgetown Hospital Mental Health Clinic (Sunrise); Pines Retirement Home (Joint Project); Skate Park (Sunrise); Special Needs Playground at Lighthouse School (Central); Spotts Newlands Park (Sunrise); Francis Bodden House (RCGC); Bus Shelters (RCGC).
