       Youth Service Month

Rotary International's Structured Programs for Youth Service are: Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Youth Exchange. The month of May is designated as “Youth Service Month” to focus on all Rotary activities that support the development of young people up to the age of 30.

The link between Rotary and youth for many clubs (including our own) is more varied than we might expect.  Clubs can engage with Youth Programs through Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN), Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA), Rotaract, Interact, Earlyact, District Scholarships, Rotary International Youth Exchanges, Peer Support Programs in schools, Cure Kids, Life Education vans, Literacy Programs in schools, and many others. If you are interested, have an online look at some you are not familiar with, particularly the Youth Driver Awareness program as your Board is contemplating becoming involved with driver awareness in Cayman.

Why not kick off Youth Services this month with a visit to Rotarians Jerrell and Michelle's Earlyact Club meeting, which will be after our meeting on Wednesday at noon.

      This Week’s Speaker

Our speaker this week is Derek Larner who has recently formalised his work creating 345 Athletic Club. 345AC provides coaching, support, mentoring, leadership for those participating in track and road running, and is mostly focused on 10-20 year old members. The club is relatively new and has been successful in attracting membership and last year brought home a number of trophies.

345AC is self-supporting through subscriptions and it’s own fund raising events. There are a small number of club members that are from less well off backgrounds, and the club very much wants to be as inclusive as possible. Some of these kids cannot afford the running shoes that would allow them to participate and achieve to their true potential, let alone club shirts and travel costs of participating in international events.

One of Derek’s goals is to secure funding to help the less well off kids participate on an equal basis, making sure they have shoes that fit, and are able to participate based on their own merit and achievements.

   Cayman Arts Trust

Janine Stabler spoke with the club last week about the launch of her new initiative, the Cayman Arts Trust. With 8 staff she presently teaches music to 350 students; approximately 95% are from the private sector. It was her wish to bring music to local students that led her to form the Trust.

The goal of the Cayman Arts Trust is as follows:

•  To provide funding for Caymanians to receive individual/group instrumental lessons (including cost of external examinations)
•  To provide funding for Caymanians to receive performing arts lessons (including costume hire for shows)
•  To cover cost of a full instrumental music scholarship each year open to all eligible students
•  To cover the cost of a full performing arts scholarship each year open to all eligible students
•  To create a scholarship for talented students wishing to further develop overseas at specialised music and drama colleges
•  To offer free peripatetic programs in the Government school system
•  To offer free workshops/courses/camps to students during vacation time from visiting specialist teachers
•  To cover the cost of instruments and resources required in peripatetic and performing arts programs.

Janine and her staff will have a fundraising dinner for their initiative in the near future.
