The Rotary Grace

O God and giver
of all good,

We thank thee for
our daily food.

May Rotary friends
and Rotary ways,

Help us to serve thee
all our days.
The 4-Way Test

Of the things we
think, say, or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill
and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?
Membership Drive - Joint Club Initiative
Submitted by the Membership Committee

Each Rotary and Rotaract club has a focus to bring awareness about Rotary efforts and hopefully attract prospective members to join our clubs to become active members. You will see each clubs’ efforts being reflected in different ways; event booths, radio, television interviews, advertisements, etc. All these efforts have proven to bring in new members but this year, we are going to try something new with targeted, joint efforts that focus on direct marketing to businesses on island.

We know there are good Rotarians and Rotaractors out there but perhaps they have never heard our message or visited our booths so we are going to go to them in their businesses and make a presentation that represents all Rotary and Rotaract clubs on Grand Cayman.

If there is a prospective member out there then we want them to know there are 3 different Rotary clubs and 2 Rotaract clubs that meet on separate days of the week and have similar initiatives but do have signature projects. We will be looking to make presentations within businesses with the primary focus to bring awareness of what Rotary is and what we do in the local community and internationally and second, to peek the interest of anyone who may be interested in visiting, participating in projects and ultimately becoming a member of any of the 5 clubs.

Our first presentation will be a DMS on Friday, August 29 and we will have one member from Rotary and one from Rotaract who will represent each others’ clubs equally. We will have one presentation highlighting all the clubs and one brochure to hand out with information on all the clubs.

Each club will be gathering a list of businesses from our current members and we will be reaching out to you to secure presentation slots throughout the year with the proactive approach to bring the awareness and interest for potential new members. Secretary Gina will present more information at the August 27 club meeting. But in the meantime, if you would like to have your business on the top of the list for the next presentations please email gina@rotarysunrise.ky.

I know if I had someone from Rotary come into my place of work years ago I likely would have been a member long before now.
Let’s “Light Up Rotary” and help grow our club members.

Robert Hamaty is the Founder and Managing Director of Tortuga Rum Company, Ltd., the largest Duty-Free and retail liquor business in Grand Cayman. He and his wife Carlene started the business in 1984 while both working for Cayman Airways. They introduced the first Cayman Islands rums to appeal to the growing tourist and cruise passenger business. A few years later they opened the first Tortuga Duty-Free liquor store. Carlene (nee Jackson) from Savannah began using Tortuga Gold Rum in her family’s generations old rum cake recipe. Introduced commercially in 1987, the Tortuga Rum Cake became an instant hit. Tortuga Rum Cakes now are the # 1 export of the Cayman Islands and shipped to over 70 countries worldwide.

Born in Savanna-La-Mar, Jamaica on 12 February 1948 to father Munair Hamaty (custous of the parish of Westmoreland) and mother Tatiana (nee Shoucair),  Capt. Hamaty admits that his early start in aviation was due to his late father who in 1962 bought a Cessna 172 and became a private pilot, Capt. Hamaty was 14 at the time. He earned his commercial pilot license at the age 17 and soon after began flying DC-8s for Air Jamaica as a First /officer. At age 24, he was promoted to a DC-9 Captain, the youngest ever for passenger jet aircraft. By age 25, Robert was a DC-8 Captain flying the Trans-Atlantic route from Kingston to London. He joined Cayman Airways as a captain in 1978 and became the chief pilot in 1982. Even with his growing Tortuga Rum Co Ltd., business he continued to fly for the airline until 1991 when illness forced his retirement after logging 17,500 flying hours. In 1996 Mr. Hamaty was in heart failure and underwent a heart transplant in Miami, Florida.

His most recent business venture is Cayman Gift Certificates.com which he will be talking about at our Wednesday meeting. Please join us to welcome Mr. Hamaty and learn about this new business that has an element of giving back to the community's non profit organizations.

Let's Boost Our Social Media Rating
Submitted by Secretary Gina

Recently, there was an email send out letting all members and friends know about our Facebook Group and Facebook Page links. If you have a Facebook account, then we are encouraging all members and friends to "Join the Group" and/or "LIKE our Page". By doing this you will be helping to spread the good works about Rotary and help to carry the message further.
What happens with Facebook is when the club's communications committee makes posts on the group and page, you will see them on your newsfeed page. Then if you click the like, make comments or share the post onto your page, all your friends will see your activity. This helps to spread the news about what Rotary Sunrise is doing and how we are helping local communities, child and adult literacy, youth projects and international initiatives. We also get to share how much fun we have while doing it with club meeting photo posts, fellowship event posts and special events worth recognizing.
From our email blitz, we managed to acquire 8 new LIKES on our Page and 3 new Group joins. With more activity we all help to do our part to "Light Up Rotary" and share our efforts for positive change in the world. If you have a Facebook account and haven't liked our Page or joined our Group, please consider doing so. Just log into your Facebook and search for RotarySunriseky for the page and CaymanSunrise for the group, then click LIKE or click on join the group button. If you don't have a Facebook account, do consider creating one (it's free) and have a whole new world of social media open up to you.

Fun facts: Out of our 74 active members, 27 are members of our Facebook Group, 10 have LIKED our Facebook Page and only 8 have LIKED our Page "and" joined our Group. So that means we have 45 members who are either not on Facebook or have not participated in either Page or Group. General public tend to prefer LIKING a Page rather than joining a public Group so that is why we have two types available. (At time of publication our Facebook Page had 173 LIKES and our Facebook Group had 101 JOINS).

Get Your Scrabble On!
Submitted by the Literacy Committee

PLAY GAMES, HELP LITERACY!  The Literacy Committee is helping LIFE (Literacy Is For Everyone) with its new fundraising event, the Scrabble Scrum.  In this fast-paced twist on a familiar game, teams of 6 try to fill a Scrabble board with as many words as possible in a limited time.  It gets your mind racing, your heart pounding, and you're helping LIFE and Rotary with its support of literacy programs for kids and adults.
We need Rotarians who will reach out to a business and recruit a team to play in the Scrabble Scrum in exchange for a $300 donation to LIFE.  Or, you can help collect donations of prizes to be raffled off.  Or, you can volunteer at the event.
Wednesday, September 10th - 5:30-8pm at Camana Bay

Enjoy an Evening Meeting with Rotaract
Submitted by Secretary Gina

Please take note, the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman will NOT have a morning meeting on Thursday, August 21. Instead, they will be holding an evening meeting at Karma at 6pm and have the meeting focused towards Professional Development with a "cocktail making" activity.

If there are any Rotarians wishing to attend the Rotaract evening meeting there is a CI$30 fee that includes the cost for cocktail ingredients and nibbles to go with it. Apparently the value for money is well worth it and you get to learn how to make cocktails that can enhance your professional development skill set.

Please contact Director Rosie Dunsford professionaldev.rotaractky@gmail.com to reserve your spot no later then Tuesday end of business day.
