The library reading competition ended right before school let out. The students worked very diligently to win an important privilege, which was provided by your club’s generous donation. I wanted to add bean bag chairs to the library as an incentive for students to relax and read. When I polled the previous contestants they really loved the ides. So with the donation I purchased four different colored bean bag chairs from Markson’s Furniture in Grand Cayman. Winning contestants won a "Bean Bag Privileged Position", and could choose the color of bean bag that would be theirs.
The reading competition was based not only on how many books the kids read, but how many pages as well. The result was the top reader read over 6,000 pages! Students were looking for large books instead of small ones. It was exciting and very competitive.
Below are pictures of the top boy reader and top girl reader who chose their color bean bag. Now whenever they come to the library to read, they automatically get their bean bag, regardless of who might have to give it up to them. The winner possess power over their privileged position, and they love it. You should have seen the faces of the seniors, who did not even enter the contest, when they had to give up the bean bag to a 7th Grader. It was priceless!!
During exam study week, the seniors did enjoy the bean bags while the juniors were in class. So you will see in the attached photos some young ladies which, I had never been able to coax into the library before reading. I was so pleased. The chairs are only for reading, naturally, and it really worked. The winners continue to enjoy their privilege until new winners are announced in 2014-2015 school year right before Christmas break.
From the funds I was able to ensure that we had smaller prizes for both competitions, as well as the major prizes. Word has spread throughout the school now, that reading in our library can be lots of fun, and very rewarding in more ways than one. All in all there were 38 participants utilizing the library this year which represents over 25% of our school population.
Thank you immensely for the generous sponsorship last year.
