The Rotary International theme for March is Literacy, Health and Hunger and Clean Water. Rotary clubs all over the world are planning various activities to highlight these themes. Rotary Sunrise is doing its part and the Literacy Committee is for the third year organizing the
"Buy a Kid a Book" Program. Rotarians volunteers canvas for the cause and money raised goes towards books for the local public libraries. This will occur on
March 14th, 21st and 28th at Fosters, Strand ALT's, Cost-U-Less and Kirk's. We need lots of Rotarian volunteers so please sign up. There are a number of other Literacy activities going on as well during the month of March.
Another major activity this month is The Heart Health Fair which commences on Saturday March 14th. Once again Rotary Sunrise will be setting up various activities for children to participate in such as; burpees, skipping rope, hoola hooping etc. We will also look after the handing out of prizes and stamping of kids passports as they complete these activities. This is an important event for us as it directly affects the Youth of Cayman. All activities are outside so bring a hat and sun screen. Local Pediatrician Christine Chen will lead the outdoor activities with her Get Active program. Other youth activities include; dance, karate, cross-fit and for those more inclined to work on their muscles Carla Ying Sing from World Gym will be there with her heavy equipment. Children must complete an short medical examination before entering the activity field. We hope to see as many Rotarians as possible come out to help.
On Thursday, March 19th, LIFE and Rotary Sunrise join forces to hold a special edition of the "Scrabble Scrum For Literacy". This will take place at St. Ignatius School from 4-6pm. Teams of six students compete in a time limited quick fill scrabble game with high value words, points for bonus words and reduced points for unused letter tiles. The Literacy Committee is looking for 20 volunteers so if you are available please come out. It should be a scrabbling good time.
On March 21st we will do our best to eradicate Polio by assisting with the Polio Bed Race. We will be joining the Grand Cayman club, Rotary Central, Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and Rotaract Blue. PP Hendrik and Rotarian Jerrell are actively looking for volunteers who will help design/decorate the bed (Sunrise will be using the same bed as last year). They are also looking for bed pushers and a bed driver. Sign up now!!!! Every dollar donated goes to this worthy cause and for every dollar raised, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation puts in two dollars. Polio still exists in three countries around the world; Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Let's get out and do our best to stamp out polio around the globe.
On the Fellowship side, mark your calendar for Saturday, March 28th as the Fellowship committee hosts it's International Dinner night. More information about this event from Rotarian Dawn Cummings as the month unfolds.
Other activities planned for this month include the distribution of tickets for the 2015 Q5 Audi Car Raffle. I anticipate PP Tony will have tickets ready for delivery at our next Wednesday meeting. If not, the latest will be the 11th of March.
Plans are also underway to host a Casino Night on Saturday, May 2nd at the ARC Camana Bay. This year we'll attempt to changes things up a bit and make it a better more exciting event than even last years. PE Christine is holding a fund raising meeting this Wednesday after our regular meeting to start the ball rolling.
March and through to June promises to be a busy time for Rotary Sunrise yet filled with lots of fun and opportunities to get your "make ups" in - if needed. We look forward to seeing you at these events. Your support and participation is greatly needed and appreciated.
