Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.

Susie Bodden (formerly Bayles) is a Chartered Educational Psychologist, the new Executive Leader of the Special Needs Foundation of Cayman and a Director of Rotary Central. Susie has been specializing in Special Needs, Early Years assessment, consultation and intervention for the last twelve years, eight of which have been in the Cayman Islands.
The Special Needs Foundation of Cayman (SNFC) is a Charitable, Non-Profit Organisation providing information, resources and education about Children with Special Needs in the Cayman Islands. SNFC believes that ‘all individuals with special needs should have a voice, be given the same opportunities as everyone else and be able to develop to their maximum potential”.

Let's Get Focused!

I was startled last week to hear a club member admit that he had only recently become aware of the six Avenues of Focus that Rotary International has asked our clubs to embrace when contemplating where our philanthropic efforts should be directed.
So, before anyone else is inadvertently left in the dark, please note the following Areas of Focus that every Sunrise member should know:
Peace & Conflict Resolution
Disease Prevention & Treatment
Water & Sanitation
Maternal & Child Health Care
Basic Education & Literacy
Economic & Community Development
These six areas are the basis for global grants from The Rotary Foundation (TRF). They are the cornerstone of the Rotary Showcase, an online tool that helps you see the projects that other clubs have successfully positioned for TRF grant funding. Those projects are posted so that you can find inspiration from other Rotarians' success stories and envision projects of your own that will make a difference in the world.
Peace & Conflict Resolution was the Area of Focus under which we applied for and received a Rotary Peace Fellowship for Danielle Coleman who is currently studying in Bangkok Thailand at Chulalongkorn University as part of a 3-month professional development certificate program. However, this area would also be appropriate for funding to help with Michael Myle's after-school programs or the Drug Court's efforts.
Disease Prevention & Treatment is an area that neatly encompasses our International Committee's medical missions in Honduras, as would Maternal & Health Care. Water & Sanitation could easily be tapped to underscore and expand Gina's recycling efforts. Basic Education & Literacy were the basis for the $5000 District grant our club secured for LIFE.
And certainly we could seek funding in the area of Economic & Community Development to partner with President Allison Peart of the Rotary Club of Kingston in her unflagging efforts to build a Junior Achievement BizTown that would reach across the sea to involve Cayman's Achievers, as well.
So please don't think of the six Areas of Focus as constricting your ideas for projects. Instead think of the power of a magnifying glass when it concentrates harmless light rays into a beam that can light fires. Using the six Areas of Focus can help us set the world ablaze with possibilities!

Hurricane Preparedness

Over the last 2 meetings member profile sheets and Hurricane / Emergency Preparedness Questionnaires have been circulating. We've had 47 members complete their sheets and we hope to have the remaining member sheets in by Wednesday. To emphasize, we will store the printed sheets in a binder that will remain with the club secretary in the event an emergency prevents us from accessing the electronic files. In addition, the questionnaire will allow us to have a better grasp of who may be available and what assistance can be offered in the event of an emergency. This information will be summarized once the remaining members are able to submit their sheets.
Even though the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration last month predicted a "below-average" hurricane season residents in the Cayman Islands are still being urged to be prepared. And we can see as the season started on Sunday a tropical concern developed in the Gulf of Mexico. As Cayman27 reported, the systems do not pose a threat to the Cayman Islands.
Please be prepared for an emergency and make a simple plan with your family and stock up on food and water (enough to last the family for at least a few weeks). Ensure you disaster supplies are stored where you can find them (new batteries, flashlights, rope, tarps, plastic bags, bad-weather clothing, first aid kit, battery-operated radio, cash and other essentials to help you through a bad storm). Be prepared and be safe!
Fundraising & Project Recap

Thank you to everyone for participating in the Club discussions over the last two weeks on the future of fundraising and projects.
Everyone in the Club has to be a fundraiser and from the discussions the consensus seems to be that we keep the two projects that we consider to be our traditional, signature fundraising projects – casino night and the car raffle. The car raffle will however have a refreshed look and will most likely feature a “green” vehicle. Treasurer John also put forward a novel idea whereby each member would have personal fundraising commitments for the year but there wasn’t time to solicit sufficient feedback on this concept. Some of the other ideas put forward such as park benches and “Tough Mudder” are not feasible as other groups are planning to do these projects.
Without funds raised it will be difficult to do service projects unless these are the most basic of projects like beach clean-ups. Members continue to stress that they want hands-on projects so it is hoped that when these are organized such as the upcoming park clean-up our members do come out in force. More support for the seniors in our community was also encouraged.
One thing that is certain is that for fundraising and hence projects to be successful we need participation by our members and we need people to step up the plate and help spearhead fundraising and project events. The current and future club leadership is committed to taking this feedback on board but they cannot do it alone and they need your help.
Please raise your hand and reach out the leaders in the Club and let them know what you are willing to do:
it could be serving on the Board as we do need to develop a new generation of club leadership to ensure the future of the Club
it could be agreeing to chair a fundraising event or project thereby assisting the director with ultimate responsibility
it could be committing to helping at a specific event and honoring that commitment
Without your support the Club cannot help the community so let’s all work together to make Sunrise the best and most successful Rotary club in the Cayman Islands. Working together we can achieve great things.

Blood Donor Day - Sat., June 14

On Saturday, June 14 all Rotary and Rotaract clubs will be having members, friends and family go to the GT Hospital for World Blood Donor day in the efforts to have more donors sign up and give blood on a regular schedule.
Exert from gov.ky: In order to ensure enough supply during emergency situations such as hurricanes, officials with Cayman's Blood Bank and the National Hurricane Committee invite residents to sign up as blood donors. "Having more persons enrolled would be helpful in the event that we are unable to import blood, if flights become unavailable during an emergency," explained the bank's Quality Coordinator Judith Clarke. "It also means that we would call on individual donors less often." The blood bank is trying to keep the blood supply at two times the normal volume, in case it becomes difficult for donors to reach the Blood Bank, which is located in the Cayman Islands Hospital, during an emergency, she added. "There is no substitute for human blood" in case of surgeries, treating accident victims, cancer patients, dialysis patients, anaemic babies, etc., she acknowledged. The bank's stock during normal times is 30-40 units; these are renewed regularly, as donated blood shelf life is 35 days.
In addition to providing benefits for patients, donating blood also is beneficial for donors. Ms Clarke noted that before donating blood, the volunteer's health status is assessed. And donating also stimulates the bone marrow, which helps to produce new cells. There's also the emotional satisfaction of knowing that the donation can help to save someone's life, she said. According to bank's estimations, the demand for blood has increased along with Cayman's population; therefore, all eligible residents between the ages 18 and 30, who are in general good health, should consider donating blood. "It is very difficult to predict the need for blood in cases of emergency, but in the case of a catastrophic event we would rely heavily on the kindheartedness of blood donors to come in at odd hours and short notices," Ms Clarke said. Why donate? You'll make a real difference in the life of someone in need
A single donation of blood can help to save the lives of up to three persons.
It builds commitment to the community.
You'll know that adequate supplies of blood are available for yourself, family members, friends, and co-workers.
You'll become a member of a special group of volunteers.
Donating will help others in emergency situations.
The procedure for giving blood
You will be asked basic information such as your name, etc.
You will then be asked to fill out a questionnaire, answering questions about your health, lifestyle, medication and travel.
Your blood pressure and heart rate (pulse) will then be taken. If these are OK, you will be permitted to move to the next step.
A blood sample is then taken to check your haemoglobin level. If this is OK, you will be permitted to move to the next step.
The actual blood-drawing procedure is done by a specially trained lab technician called a phlebotomist. It usually takes 5 -10 minutes. There may be a little sting when the needle is inserted, but there is usually no pain during the donation.
After the donation, the donor is encouraged to relax for about 10 minutes and have some refreshments before leaving.
It takes your body approximately 3-8 weeks to completely replenish the red blood-cell levels. But the volume is replaced within 72 hours. Source: The Blood Bank at the Cayman Islands Hospital
All members are encouraged to participate in this Community Service event. Even if you are not eligible to give blood we encourage you to show your support and come to the GT Hospital from 9am to noon. Make sure to add your name to the sign up sheet on Wednesday and become a regular blood donor... someone's life may depend on it.
Spotts Newlands Park Repair & Beautification

Our next major Community Service hands on project is taking place on Saturday, June 21 from 8am onward with Fellowship to follow as voted on by the members at the last meeting. This is your chance to roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and help improve our community with the beautification of our signature park.
I'm looking for members who would be able to volunteer materials and/or services for the following areas:
Lumber to repair missing slats from benches and tables (donated material needed)
Basketball hoop netting (donated material needed)
Professional services for removing basketball court area (services needed)
Paint and painting supplies for paint touch-ups on benches, tables and building structures (checking on inventory levels from last year)
Sand for topping up around swing set and playground (donated material needed)
Members with the following skills would be greatly appreciated or members looking to acquire these skills will benefit with some hands-on experience at this event:
Painters for touching up building structures, benches, and picnic tables (brushes and paint will be supplied)
Gardeners for tree trimming and scrub pruning (bring what tools you have)
Light Carpenters/Handy Man types for cutting lumber and fixing weak or broken slats on benches and picnic tables (saw, screws, tape measure and tools will be supplied)
Sand Distributors for play ground area (sand will be supplied but shovels are welcomed)
General help for garbage pickup, gardening cuttings and leaf collection (gloves and garbage bags will be supplied)
Cooking help for Barbecue Fellowship (food preparation and cooking - utensils will be supplied)
Photographer to capture all the moments (must have your own camera)
A task sheet will be circulating on Wednesday for sign-up to these tasks and other duties. Please ensure you sign up so we can plan for proper numbers and ensure there is food for everyone.
Honduras Trip

The club's International Service Committee (ISC) is planning a humanitarian trip to Honduras and looking at travel dates within September. Rotarian Jonathan will have more information with photos about this upcoming trip which focuses on Disease Prevention & Treatment (as one of Rotary's Areas of Focus). You do not need to be a committee member of the ISC to participate in the trip and in fact the committee is encouraging all members to get involved if you are interested.
More information will be shared at Wednesday's meeting.
Rotary Sunrise - Changeover Ceremony

This year's Rotary Sunrise Changeover Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 28 at Agua Restaurant & Lounge. Please join us for our annual celebration of another Rotary year and welcome our new year with the installation of our new President and Directors. The evening's festivities will commense at 6:30pm with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner at 7:00pm and official ceremony afterwards.
Tickets are CI$50 and will include a complementary glass of bubby during the reception followed by a 3 course meal with Agua signature dishes and a glass of red or white wine with dinner (note: menu may be subject to change).

The 7th Annual Open Arms Ceremony is slated for Saturday 7th June at 6:00pm at Luca Restaurant.
The Open Arms Ceremony seeks to honour caretakers, teachers and others throughout the Cayman Islands who have assisted individuals with special needs and recognise people who have excelled in their lives despite their disability. There are six categories to be awarded throughout the evening.
Tickets for the award ceremony cost $75 and include a four-course dinner, cocktails, valet parking, as well as silent art auction. Proceeds will benefit organizations such as the Lighthouse School, Sunrise Adult Training Center, Maple House, Special Olympics and other Rotaract Blue Open Arms projects.
