We thank thee for

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill

Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?
Special Thank You to Rotarian David Reid and Rotarian Mark Macfee for providing printed copies of the weekly newsletter for members and guests to read at the tables.

Ordering Breakfast on Wednesday?

Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.

The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

April is
Rotary Magazine Month

The Rotarian Magazine - Digital Version
Submitted by Director Gina

You may have noticed April had a different theme in the last issue. The fact is April is Magazine Month in the District instead of Conference and Training (even though there are so many training opportunities going on this month).

Take this opportunity to get familiar with the new website for The Rotarian magazine http://therotarianmagazine.com/. There are some excellent articles in the April issue. Just click and see what titles pop out at you.

What the Prez Sez...
Happy Birthday to Us!
Submitted by President J.D. Mosley-Matchett

This week Sunrise turns 12.

Twelve is an interesting age--not quite a teenager, but not really a baby, either. The same awkward straddling of age-related roles that I've witnessed in my daughter and myself appears in many ways manifested in our own Rotary club.

By the age of 12, most children have set aside some of the innocent gullibility of childhood. Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are recognized as fantasies. Sunrise, too, has shed some of its innocence as we now rigorously perform background checks on prospective members and examine with skepticism the motives of our club leaders.

Perhaps that's why last week's Leadership Dinner ("Future Vision - Charting the Future") only attracted three people who aren't already on the Sunrise Board. And one of those three people was a spouse and not even a member of the club!

To be sure, it was an excellent opportunity for discussion, food, and fellowship. And the non-board members offered excellent insights and opinions.

But where is the next "generation" of Sunrise directors and officers?

PE Kim has been struggling to populate a minimized Board and its set of chairpersons who will take power in less than three months. VP Christine has begun planning for her year, but she is worried where her board members will come from.

Many of the current Board members have been recycled from previous administrations. They are tired and quite honestly deserve a break to just be regular Rotarians for a while. But, unless more members are willing to participate in the leadership of the club, Sunrise may be heading for trouble.

If you were unable to attend the potluck dinner last week, I certainly understand and hope that you'll join us for the next one.

If you were simply unwilling to attend, please consider what will happen to our club if everyone takes a back seat and refuses to control its future.

In honor of our club turning 12, I'm announcing my personal crusade against the 80/20 rule. It simply isn't right for 20% of the members to do 80% of the work. In fact, it's simply unsustainable.
Future Vision Dinner
Submitted by VP Christine Mathews

The Future Vision Pot Luck dinner held last Thursday was declared a successful and productive evening by all in attendance. There was lots of good fellowship and the ideas flowed on how Sunrise as a Club could be more effective moving forward.

An in depth report of the discussions will be made at a future club meeting but a summary is provided here so that members and future Sunrisers can put their thinking caps on!

In attendance were President JD, PE Kim, Treasurer John, Secretary Deirdre, VP Christine, Director Gina, Rotarians Geoff, Steve, Barbara  Oosterwyk, Pauline and Rachel and Gina’s husband Mark.

The group will recommend to the membership that we maintain our focus on literacy and youth.

In terms of projects we are probably trying to do too many, especially in light of our declining membership numbers. The group felt we should do fewer projects and do them better and that we should poll the membership on which projects would both benefit Sunrise and the community and that was of interest to them. The top ten projects would then be considered for adoption.

The idea was also proposed that instead of the traditional committee structure, it may be better to assign people to a project of interest to them and this may help to engage members more.

In terms of fundraising the group is recommending that Casino Night be retained as an event. However as many members are challenged with selling tickets for events such as the car raffle members will be asked for ideas on alternative events. Additionally the idea was proposed that each member be given a fundraising target for the year which they could raise however they like including writing a cheque for the amount. Fundraising events may also be designated for specific causes.

Additional points raised was making better use of all volunteers at events and the need to recruit quality members.

The follow-up to this evening will be a series of three special Wednesday morning meetings. The first will be to discuss the concepts outlined above. The second will be to complete the discussion and to vote on projects and fundraising ideas and the third to present the results to the Club.

At this point if any of you have any thoughts on projects or fundraising ideas please submit them to VP Christine.

A "Thank You" from the Brac
Submitted by Director Gina on behalf of Director Andrea, Literacy Committee

Rotary Sunrise does change lives and it is with the efforts of our dedicated and hard working committees and club members. That's why it is wonderful to share thank you letters from organizations who have experienced benefited from our giving.

In a letter dated March 12 from Layman E. Scott Sr High School on the Brac, Principal Adrian E. Jones wrote to Literacy Director Andrea:

Dear Mrs. Bryan,

I acknowledge receipt of the cheque No. 000978 for the amount of KYD $300.00.

I wish also to extend my sincere gratitude to you and your organization for the thoughtful contribution to the education of our students. This gratitude is extended on behalf of our staff and parents.

May God continually bless your future endeavour.

Sincerely,
Adrian E. Jones - Principal

Rotary Leadership Institute - Registration Closes this Week
Submitted in part by Director Gina and President JD

Don't let the name scare you, the Rotary Leadership Institute training weekend is actual the best value/fellowship/education you will experience. Not only will you have the opportunity to learn more about Rotary and discuss club issues with other club members that may be having similar concerns, you will have the best fellowship opportunity you will likely get (other than at the District Conference). Whether you have been in Rotary for only a few months or a decade, this opportunity is available to everyone. If this is your first time registering, take courses 1 & 2 then the next time RLI is offered complete the process with part 3 and the graduate course.

As an added incentive (because the club feels so strongly about the value of education you will receive), the first 5 Rotarians who register will have the option to be reimbursed 50% of the costs. But that is only offered to the first 5 who submits their expenses to Treasurer John.

If you were planning to sign up, you must do it NOW to avoid being shut out.

TEDxSevenMileBeach

You may have heard/saw all the buzz about the TEDx talks that were happening in Cayman last week.

What is this TEDx talks all about anyways? TED is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. You will likely hear more about future TEDx talks here in the Cayman Islands and you can thank Rotaract Blue member Marzeta Bodden for making it all a reality.

Our very own President JD didn't hesitate to get in on the action with a Polio Plus booth at the event to help raise awareness and donations. Oh and a photo op with the famous "X".

Pretty In Pink
Fundraiser from GTYC

You may have noticed these flyers on the tables from the April 2 meeting. If any member wishes to support the cause and have a delightful evening out at the Clubhouse you can purchase a ticket to the event for $50 or purchase a ticket for the raffle prize at $10 each directly from GTYC. Thank you for showing your support.
