Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.

More than one million Rotarians worldwide have contributed to the success of the polio eradication effort.
Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.
The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

Fresh Ideas
Submitted by President J.D. Mosley-Matchett
I attended the Mother Club's Rotary Round-Up last night at Camana Bay's Festival Green. Picture 300+ people in cowboy clothes chowing down on a hearty Texas-style meal, bidding at auction, and stealing side-long glances at the mechanical bull. (Nope, didn't see anyone actually ride it, but perhaps that happened after Stacy and I left.)
What was even more fun for me (being the nerd-ling I am) was analyzing the event from a fundraising standpoint. Fortunately Stacy lent her sharp eye and keen scrutiny to the process. (Not to mention her SUPER cute outfit, of course!) Dress-up elevates the mood for any Cayman fundraiser because people love playing make-believe.
Score 2 points for fun.
The Rotary Round-Up is RCGC's primary fundraiser. By concentrating the member's efforts on only one fundraiser a year, it eliminates the feeling of perpetual begging that so many Sunrisers have complained about.
Score 2 points for member satisfaction.
The ticket price was $200. (Yes, per person!) But only 3 of the 31 tables were set aside for individual ticket holders. The other tables were all held by companies. (Yes, I used my iPhone to shoot a photo of the sponsored tables list.) So, only 10% of the ticket sales were made to individuals--a key factor that reduces the effort of selling event tickets.
Score 2 points for efficiency.
Setting it in a field eliminated the high hotel venue costs, meaning more money available for elaborate decorations which yielded LOTS of photo ops. That's key because people LOVE to send "selfies" to their friends and social media outlets--especially at fancy dress occasions.
Score 2 points for self-publicity.
Wine and beer were free until 9:30 p.m. Considering alcohol's twin consequences of reduced inhibitions and enhanced competitiveness, the numerous bids well in excess of the printed retail price were predictable, but still amazing. In at least one case the final bid was more than twice the retail value of the item. Stacy recorded all of the winning bids from the live auction, so anyone interested in seeing the impressive results of PE Kim's auctioneering can see me before or after Wednesday's meeting.
Score 2 points for knowing that "liquor is quicker."
Add up those points and this fundraiser scores a Perfect 10 in my book! In short, I would "guess-timate" that the Mother Club snagged at least $60,000 (and maybe more) after expenses. Not bad for a single night of fundraising. Both RCGC and Central (with its bus shelters) target corporate sponsorship and reduce the number of fundraisers. Perhaps Sunrise should take note and do the same.
This Week's Meeting: Fundraising Ideas & Service Projects Recap
Topic: Discussion from Last Week's Brainstorming Fellowship Forum
Please join us on Wednesday, May 28 on the downstairs level of GT Yacht Club as VP Christine presents the feedback from last week's fellowship brainstorming discussions. We will be looking for member support with some of these projects and layout an action plan with ownership to gather more details on the feasibility of the top ideas. We will be looking for members to take claim on researching costs, materials and effort needed to make some of these ideas worthwhile. We will set a time frame to then have these members present the findings back to the club at a later date.
Having ideas is the first step but then we need action to gather more details to make the fundraising ideas and projects a reality. Will you volunteer to help research and present your findings? We need your involvement if change is to happen. Let's all do our part to ensure our future fundraising and service projects are successful, fun and meaningful to those who stand to benefit from our club's efforts. Engage Rotary... Change Lives!
Donation Made to Club for Use of Gaming Equipment
Submitted by President Elect Kim Remizowski
In previous years Rotary Sunrise has had a number of requests to lend out its casino equipment. We've always been cautious about doing so because we wanted exclusivity to this precious event which raises 1/3 of our annual funds. But as time went on, other non-profit groups got into the act and before long there were a number of small casino night fund raisers being held ie. United World Colleges, Rugby, private parties etc. The view more recently was that our equipment was gathering mold and it could be used or lent out to fund our own fund raising/project's account.
In early April Rotary Sunrise received a request to lend out it's Casino Equipment for a private function. After receiving some initial information PP Tony and PE Kim took this request to the Board. It was agreed by the Board that we would lend out the equipment for a donation. It was also agreed that we would not become involved in the set up/coordination or running of the function nor would the individual associate his event with Rotary Sunrise in any way. Other businesses involved in providing gambling/gaming equipment such as Massive, AI Rentals etc may take offence to that they we would appear to be getting into their line of business. Therefore the donation angle. It was also agreed at the board level that proper legal guidance would be required in order to set up Rotary as the coordinator and runner of the event This would be considered the "second stage" for Rotary Sunrise if we wanted to proceed.
In mid April we confirmed with the individual that we able to lend the equipment for his private birthday party on May 10th in exchange for a donation. Unfortunately, the individual did not know any croupiers, dealers to run the event. We then provided some introductions and he took it from there. PP Kim prepared an inventory list of all the casino equipment and took pictures to ensure no damage. PE Kim arranged Miracle Brokers to pick up, deliver and return the casino equipment. This fee was billed directly to the individual. PE Kim also inventoried the equipment on its return to Ron Stoll's garage.
We understood the event was a success. Some of our Rotarians were invited to help out as dealers which they did on their own accord. Even though we suggested a minimum $1,000 donation for the equipment, the individual made a donation of CI $2,000.
I think the work effort is fairly minimal on the lending out of the equipment. There is considerably more work and time involved if the club is considering the coordination of the event. A proper fee structure would have to be set up and agreed by the board.
Editor’s Note: It is not the intention of the board or club members to proceed with any further rental of equipment until clarification can be sought from legal and regulatory sources as it relates to a trade and business license required for future rentals, should the activity prove to be a sustainable fundraising endeavour for the club.
Member Profile Updates & Hurricane Preparedness
Submitted by Communications Director Gina
Thank you to the 36 members who were present at last Wednesday's meeting and completed their Clubrunner Profile Review sheet and Hurricane Disaster Questionnaire. Having current and up-to-date information on our members ensures we are that much more prepared in the event of an emergency. Not to mention the regular reporting on membership statistics needed for District and RI.
I'm happy to report we were able to correct 11 member profiles due to incorrect address, birth date, home/work contact details as a result of this quick exercise. There may be more member profiles that need correcting as I will continue to circulate the remaining 38 profile sheets at this coming meeting.
Information from the Hurricane Disaster Questionnaire will be made available at a later date once all members have completed the sheets. And remember, these printed sheets will be stored in a binder and kept with the Club Secretary in the event we are unable to access our systems in an emergency.
Again thank you for taking the time to review and update your profiles.
Blood Donor Day - Sat., June 14
Submitted by Director Gina
As Rotarians we are asked to either give our time and/or our money for worthy causes but there is a third option and that is to give our blood. On June 14th every year, the World Health Organization sets forth a campaign for donors to give blood. This year on Saturday, June 14th the Cayman Islands Blood Bank will be looking for donors to help fill the bank with blood. The theme for this year is "Safe Blood for Saving Mothers".
As we head into hurricane season it is even more important to ensure our blood bank is stocked in case we have an emergency beyond the regular need for blood. Will you help answer the call and give blood this year?
Rotary Sunrise has reached out to Rotaract Blue (who has typically earmarked blood donation as one of their signature events) and together we hope to encourage and motivate all 3 Rotary clubs and 2 Rotaract club members to join in the blood drive. Along with our friends and family members we hope to have this June 14th a year the Blood Bank will remember. And who knows this may likely turn into an annual joint club event of giving.
More details will be forthcoming as arrangements are made but please do save the date on your calendar and start to talk to your friends and family. If you are one who is unable to give blood then we still look forward to your involvement as there will be other ways you can support on June 14th.
Spotts Newlands Park Repair & Beautification
Submitted by Director Gina McBryan, on behalf of Community Service
Members have been asking for a hands-on community service project so here is one. The Cecile Crighton Spotts Newlands Park (a Rotary Sunrise Project) is in need of some repair and beautification. From the photos you can see there are a number of repairs needed with the biggest issue being the basketball court area. We have scheduled the community project for Saturday, June 21 but some preparation work will be needed prior to that date.
If any members have access to or willing donate supplies to aid in the repairs please contact Director Gina at gina@rotarysunrise.ky
Lumber to repair missing slats from benches and tables
Basketball hoop netting
Professional services for removing basketball court area
Paint and painting supplies for paint touch-ups on benches, tables and building structures
Sand for topping up around swing set and playground
We will be turning this hands-on project into a fellowship following the work project with a good ol' fashioned family barbecue at the park. Hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, fruit and drinks. Last year in May this TLC project at the Park was favoured by the club and we had a high turn-out of members for service and fellowship. So this year we are tackling some of the more challenging areas as we are anticipating more member involvement.
For this project and fellowship to be a success we will need volunteers to help in the following areas:
Painting
Shrub and tree trimming
Carpentry on benches and tables
Clean-out, soap and scrub of barbecue grill
Basketball court floor removal
General garbage pickup
Sand distribution
Cooks for barbecue
Photographer
Other roles will be needed as more details are ironed out
One suggestion is to have the hands-on project on Saturday, June 21 and then the Family Fellowship Barbecue on the Sunday, June 22. A member poll will be taken at this next club meeting to see what members would prefer to do.
