The Rotary Grace

O God and giver
of all good,

We thank thee for
our daily food.

May Rotary friends
and Rotary ways,

Help us to serve thee
all our days.
The 4-Way Test

Of the things we
think, say, or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill
and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?
What is the Red Badge Checklist?
Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.
  1. Be Greeter
  2. Four Way Test
  3. Complete New Member Training Session
  4. Getting to Know You Talk
  5. Prepare bio for publication in the Sun
  6. Do a make-up at another club (locally or internationally)
  7. Update your profile on the web-site
There are also 11 optional tasks but the 7 listed above are mandatory and it is suggested to aim at completing the list within a 6 month period (but that is only a suggestion). For more information about the Red Badge Checklist or any new member information please visit our website home page under "For New Members" on the menu bar.

Ordering Breakfast on Wednesday?

Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.

The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

With over 200 readers weekly (Rotarians and Friends of Rotary) why not consider posting your logo and web link within our newsletter. Your sponsorship will not only help Rotary Sunrise but your business will get exposure to grow your clientelle. Contact info@rotarysunrise.ky to learn more about advertising with Rotary Sunrise.

Discovery Day
Submitted by President J.D. Mosley-Matchett

Please allow me to give you a Discovery Day gift. (Is this the first one you've ever received??)

This holiday message will be short and sweet. In fact, it's really just one simple question: What has Rotary helped you discover?

I don't know how you'll answer that question, but for me the primary discovery is the common purpose of "Service Above Self" that I share with Rotarians all over the globe--most of whom I will never personally meet. The certain knowledge that I have this in common with 1.2 million people all across the world is pretty exciting.

But there are other things that Rotary has helped me discover:
  • I know now that Rotaractors are not merely Rotarians-in-the-making, but are amazing adults making the world a better place on their own terms--and that there is much I can learn from them.
  • I witnessed how patience and networking can literally change the course of history--Rotarians have accomplished international missions that nations couldn't tackle.
  • I now have close friends and mentors whom I certainly never would have met had it not been for Rotary--and my life has been enriched beyond measure.
  • I have learned to be thoughtful and listen when my first reaction is to be dismissive or disagree--Rotary has made me a better person.
This Discovery Day has been one of thoughtful introspection for me.

So, I invite you to be reflective and ask yourself: What has Rotary helped you discover?

CCTV Project at John Gray High School

We will have three representatives from the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman visit our club on Wednesday to provide a more detailed update on this project. As you are aware, this joint project between Rotary Sunrise, Rotary Central, Rotary Grand Cayman, Rotaract Blue, Rotaract Grand Cayman and the Security Centre was initiated this year with Rotary Sunrise approving $2187 from Youth Services going toward this project.

With the CCTV cameras now installed at John Gray High School this is garnishing much positive attention. Hear more about the progress of this project as we welcome Director David Stephens, PC Miller and President Stephanie Wight to give a brief update to keep everyone informed.

Youth Services Update Highlights
Submitted by Director Donald, Youth Services

This week's pre-meeting PowerPoint show will highlight some of the Youth Service Committee's successes over the past while. Please do come early for this week's meeting, grab breakfast, extra fellowship and get updated on what is happening with our area of focus as far as Youth is concerned.

Member Profile Updates
Submitted by Communications Director Gina

We all do some spring cleaning in our homes, so doing some in our club should be no different. If you haven't taken the time to log into Club Runner recently to update your member profile then please come to this meeting on May 21st. As part of our effects to ensure all member's profile details are up to date and accurate for Sunrise club business, District statistics and RI records we will have each member's individual profile information printed and available for your review. In addition to your profile information review, we are asking each member to fill out a short Hurricane & Disaster Preparedness Questionnaire (prepared by PP Chris Bowring) prior to the start of the meeting.

These sheets will be collected at the end of the meeting and should not be taken with you. The updated information will be entered into your Club Runner profile and the printed sheets will be kept in a binder with the club secretary files for use during a hurricane or other disaster should an electronic version be unaccessible.

Please help us to update your information and ensure we have all your relevant information should our club be in a disaster situation and need to get a hold of you and your family.

Six Marathons for Cayman HospiceCare - www.Six4Hospice.com
Submitted by PP Derek Haines, Rotary Grand Cayman, and courtesy of www.six4hospice.com

Not many of us have been spared the trauma of the death or serious illness of a loved one; be that family or friend. Hospice not only gives comfort and dignity to the patient but respite for those caring from the stress and energy sapping effort of doing so.

At present, Cayman HospiceCare operates this service in rented locations and in the homes of their patients. Derek Haines is going to run 6 marathons around the globe over 8 months to change that. Derek and the Six4Hospice project aims to raise $1million for the charity so they can build a purpose-built inpatient and operations facility of their very own. Your donation will have a huge impact; every dollar raised will go directly towards this building project which will release the charity some $6k a month currently spent on rent.

And as if that isn’t impressive enough, Derek is 65 years young.

Update from Past President Derek Haines (May 13, 2014) - As you are aware the first two marathons are now history and I have the following four left to run:-Pamplona, Spain (28th June), San Francisco (27th July) with P.E. Brian and Rotarian Tim running the half at the same time, Dublin (27th October) and finally Cayman on the 7th December.

The donations continue to come in and I was delighted to receive cheques at the weekend for $500, $1000 and a superb $25,000 from Peter Fitgerald of Pestkil that drove us past the $400,000 mark. A total of  $26,500 that represents another $1000 per mile for the next race.

The community is joining in led by Franz Manderson with his 5K run on the 25th May and ICOA is holding a charity dinner with proceeds going to this challenge. Please keep this fund raiser in mind when speaking with friends and colleagues and if they can assist please point them towards the above web site.

I am confident that we can meet our $1million target but it will take all of us to ensure that we do. Thank you all for the fantastic support thus far.

One Family's Polio Experience
Submitted by Rotarian Howard Cross

During Rotarian Howard's recent travels to Kansas City he attended a local Rotary meeting. The guest speaker for that meeting was Past District 6040 Governor Carl Chinnery who gave a moving speech on Polio eradication in which he quoted a letter from his mother who fought polio sickness in her family in the 1940's.

Rotarian Howard was so moved by the story and the speaker PDG Carl Chinnery that he wanted to share it with our club. Click here to open the letter.

Background and Bio of PDG Carl Chinnery
Past District 6040 Governor Carl Chinnery, a polio survivor himself, shares a letter from his mother about the horrific experience polio put their young family through, giving us all a much more profound appreciation for the Rotarians who have gone before us in eradicating polio and inspiring us to work harder to complete the task set before us.

Carl served as District Governor of District 6040 for the 2002-2003 term, during which time he received the Presidential Citation.  He was 2007 Convener for Nomination of International Director for Zones 29 and 30.  He was 2010 delegate to the Council on Legislation.  He is a Major Paul Harris Donor, Level 5, and Benefactor, Charter Member of the Bequest Society, and Inaugural Class of the Paul Harris Society of District 6040.  He has served as Major Donor Advisor and Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, and RI Presidents Representative.

Carl has received awards from the States of Arkansas and Kentucky.  He received the District 6040 Humanitarian Award for Polio Eradication, 2010 Regional Service Award for a Polio - Free World and the Citation for Meritorious Service.  He has also served as Polio Plus Chairman for District 6040 and Rotary International Polio Plus Partners Task Force Member.

Every member of Carl’s family has received the Paul Harris Award.

During his Rotary career, Carl has sponsored over 135 new members and the installation of three new clubs.

Child Month Dress Down Day - Friday, May 23
Submitted by Rotarian Dawn Cummings on behalf of Feed Our Future

Feed our Future is a not-for-profit Association whose primary mission is to solve childhood hunger and to support intellectual nourishment in the Cayman Islands through the funding of nutritionally balanced lunches to children in need in Cayman's schools. This supports our mission of enriching the learning potential and health of the child; whilst at the same time reducing the burden on the community that would otherwise be called to support these persons in need.

Every year, the Department of Children and Family Services designates each May as Child Month in the Cayman Islands. For the third year, Feed Our Future will be partnering with them to hold an Island-wide dress down day to raise awareness and funds in support of our goal towards a hunger-free Cayman Islands, especially for our children. This year’s Child Month theme is Train. Inspire. Motivate. Empower (TIME).

On
May 23, 2014 participants of all ages are encouraged to dress down in bright colours for our cause. All funds raised will be going directly towards Feed Our Future’s school meal programme. We are also offering the option to purchase a 2014 commemorative t-shirt for adults and children to be worn on the designated day.

If you are interested in supporting, please contact
stacey@feedourfuturecayman.org.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Feed Our Future, thank you in advance for your support towards our goal towards a hunger free Cayman Islands.
