Rotary Sunrise is an amazing club made up of smart, dynamic members. I look forward to getting involved with more hands on projects with you this year, solidifying and expanding our friendships, and serving humanity together.
In the coming year we have a number of goals to achieve, and Rotary International has asked that we focus on three strategic priorities: 1.) Support and Strengthen Our Clubs; 2.) Focus and Increase Humanitarian Service, and; 3.) Enhance Public Image and Awareness.
We also have a fierce group of passionate and enthusiastic Rotaractors joining our ranks this year, some who will have one foot in our door learning from us as seasoned Rotarians, while still being Rotaractors. As they are the next generation of strong leaders in our community I hope you’ll join me in welcoming them into our fold, mentoring them, and having fun learning from them.
It is an absolute honour to have been elected along with the 2016-2017 Board to represent Rotary Sunrise. I thank you for placing your confidence and trust in me and your incoming Board – we will strive to ensure that we’re meeting your expectations and those of our community. We in turn look forward to collaborating with every one of you, and thoroughly enjoying this year of Change!
Yours In Rotary Service,
Dawn Cummings
President 2016/2017
Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise
Salute to the Secretaries
As we say goodbye and thank you to our President Christine, and hello and thank you to President Dawn for what she is about to embark upon, we need to remember the tireless workers behind the scenes. While the Board works away busily, it is the Secretary who is caught with the brunt of the work that our President asks her to do on behalf of the club.
Martha works for the C.I. Government as a GIS Graphic Designer, and Hazel, who recently celebrated getting her doctorate, works as the Chief Nursing Officer for the C.I. Health Service Authority.
On behalf of the club, we say thank you so much to outgoing secretary Martha Connolly and thank you so much to incoming secretary Hazel Brown. Where would we be without you?
Gavel-Passing Tips
When she passed on the gavel to our new chief, PP Christine had a message borrowed from Girl Scouts who keep a “change purse” that contains a smile, a candle, a pebble, and a heart.
This was meant as a lighthearted, fun gift as Dawn begins what Christine knows will be a wonderful year of leading the amazing family that is Rotary Sunrise.
A Smile: For they say, when you wear your smile it lifts the spirit of others, spreads a little laughter, warms a cold heart, and calms the fear of a child. Your smile can bring change to all you meet.
A Candle: For when you light your candle it sheds a small light, spreads a golden glow, gives a gentle warmth and lights another candle. The candle light represents the change your life can bring to others.
A Pebble: For just as your pebble when tossed into the water, causes those waters to dance and the ripples to spread, so too, you, working, living being with others can bring change to their lives.
A Heart: For the heart represents your life which can bring light, warmth, music and joy into the lives of those around you. You can do anything for anyone, anywhere, any time. Working with others, your life can bring change.
Save Your Clothes For Guaruma
Once again our Club's International Committee is organising a trip to Guaruma and need your help. Both medical and non-medical personnel will be leaving for the weekend of September 9th, returning the 12th, and this time visiting two towns: Las Mangas and El Pital. They are asking for things that you may have in your home that to parents and children in Honduras, are beyond their ability to purchase. Please have a look at the list and consider donating.

August MMM
On Tuesday August 9th P.P. Christine Mathews hosted her MMM (Monthly Mentoring Meeting). It happened to also be a significant birthday for her that same day.
As well as a large contingent of Rotaractors, nine Rotarians attended the evening event that featured nurse Kathy Corley who gave us valuable information for emergency situations. Nurse Corley is a Canadian who has thirty years experience in her field. She works at Seven Mile Clinic.
