The Rotary Grace

O God and giver
of all good,

We thank thee for
our daily food.

May Rotary friends
and Rotary ways,

Help us to serve thee
all our days.
The 4-Way Test

Of the things we
think, say, or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill
and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?

Ways to Donate to the Foundation
Submitted by PP Hendrik van Genderen

During Foundation month I like to highlight how you can support the Rotary Foundation. Please consider a donation to the Rotary Foundation as part of your Christmas giving.
A donation to Polio Plus helps to eradicate polio. You remember the “This Close Campaign” to show that the global fight against polio is almost completed. There are only 3 endemic countries left: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria, however the fight against polio is at a critical stage and it is essential to keep up the fight to achieve complete polio eradication.
A donation to the Annual Fund supports the wide area of the Foundation’s programmes. If the donation is to the Annual Fund-SHARE programme it also helps our District 7020 as 50% comes back to the District Designated Fund, this means that our district can spend this money for its specific programmes. Last year Sunrise benefitted from a USD 5,000 District 7020 grant to Literacy Is For Everyone - LIFE, so we saw our money coming back to Cayman.
There are two ways to support the Rotary Foundation:
1. Donate through Rotary Sunrise.
Just approach Treasurer John or me to let us know that you want to make a donation to the Foundation and whether it should go to the Annual Fund or to PolioPlus. Give us a cheque made out to Rotary Sunrise and it will go into the club account and then we transfer it to the Foundation in your name. We will take care of the paperwork.
2. Donate directly to the Foundation.
You can arrange for a bankdraft to be send to the Foundation, but it is a lot easier to use Rotary Direct, which takes credit card payments. Go to www.rotary.org and select the GIVE button, if you support the Annual Fund, select the Annual Fund – SHARE button, so your donation supports District 7020 through the District Designated Fund.
Payments through Rotary Direct can be made as a one-time donation or a recurring donation on a monthly basis.  Please let me know if you use Rotary Direct, so I have an idea of the donations made on behalf of our club.
All donations that you make will be credited to your Rotary account. One dollar is one point. You can access your personal account by logging into your account. The Foundation gives a Paul Harris Fellowship in appreciation of a donation of USD 1,000. For multiples of USD 1,000 the Rotary Foundation gives multiple Paul Harris Fellowships. It is not necessary to donate USD 1,000 at once for a Paul Harris Fellowship; it can be done in smaller contributions that accumulate to USD 1,000. If you think that someone else deserves a Paul Harris Fellowship, you can transfer your points to that person. It is not necessary that the recipient is a Rotarian.

Thank you for your consideration. If you need help to make your donation for the Christmas season, check me. I’ll be happy to assist.

The Pines Birthday Luncheon
Submitted by Community Service

Just a very quick note to inform you that the Pines Retirement Home November Birthday Luncheon, that our club organizes annually, will be held this coming Saturday, November 15, 2014.

The residents celebrating their birthday in November are:
09 November – Olive Miller
13 November – Jennie Fletcher

The Luncheon will be between 12 noon and possibly 1:30 - 2:00. This year we will be catering to 42 residents and staff. They have asked that we arrive at 11:45 am. We will need assistance with the distribution of the food and drinks to the residents. A sign up sheet will be circulated at this weeks Wednesday meeting to get the names of Rotarians who will be able to assist.

Our Earlyactors will also be in attendance to perform a skit and sing and we will also be distributing hand-made flower (made by Secretary Gina) accompanied with a note for each flower to the residents.
Our aim is to ensure that the residents have a truly wonderful time enjoying the meal and the interactions with us and our Earlyactors.

Please join us in celebrating our seniors on this special day!

Junior Achievement Update
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

The Rotary Sunrise/Global Directories Junior Achievement group is now four weeks into the eighteen week programme. As an update to their progress, they have recently voted on their President and executive board members and agreed on a product for manufacturing. Achievers have sold several shares to build their capital that will aid them in purchasing materials needed to create their product. The group is excited for the next stage of the business and looking forward to deciding on a company name that will help drive their marketing campaign and sales. Stay tuned for continued JA updates, product reveal, Facebook launch and upcoming sales dates. It's time again for the Fred Speirs Inter School Debates. The 1st round will be held on Wednesday, November 19th. The Moot: There should be random drug testing for all high school students in the Cayman Islands.
Rotarians, we are seeking volunteers for judges and time keepers. 6 Judges and 2 time keepers are needed. If you would like to volunteer, contact PP Woody Foster or any member of the Literacy Committee.

Japanese Bookmarks
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

Last week we had the pleasure of hearing our guest speaker Ms. Jennifer Weber talk about her Rotary Student Exchange experience and how it changed her for the better. Even though it happened over 29 years ago, when she was 17 years old, it still seems like yesterday for her. Her year long student exchange in Fukuoka, Japan provided her with a cultural experience that she would not have been exposed to at that young age if it hadn't been for the Rotary Foundation and all the Rotarians around the world who continue to support the Foundation through their annual donations. As a small token of her gratitude, Jennifer made Japanese bookmarks for every club member. Each bookmark has their first name printed in Japanese and how you would pronounce it. If you weren't present at last week's meeting, please make sure you find your bookmark at the table by the Greeter's station.

Rotaract Blue 'Shades of Red' Event
Submitted by Rotaract Blue Cayman Islands

On the 22nd November 2014 at 7:00PM, at the Blue Cilantro Restaurant, Rotaract Blue will be hosting their 7th Annual “Shades of Red” event. The theme is "The Governors's Selections". Her Excellency the Governor, Mrs. Helen Kilpatrick has graciously agreed to be a part of this benevolent event.
Shades of Red is our annual wine tasting event to benefit the Cayman AIDS Foundation and other Community Service initiative. This annual event utilizes a warm, laid-back and enjoyable setting to raise awareness about and encourage healthy lifestyle choices that prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Please help us spread the word by forwarding the flyer to your friends, family, coworkers, everyone! We want to make this event a success and we need your help!

Ranel Grant, Community Service Director 2014-2015

Interact Club Assessment Survey
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

Just over one week ago discussions began on assessing the level of support from the Rotary and Rotaract clubs for an Interact Club on Grand Cayman. The concept to start an Interact Club is not new, in fact one was started at John Gray High School but without a strong school advisor the club did not continue. We have reached out to both Central and the Grand Cayman club to see about a joint sponsorship and support to ensure a club for youth ages 12 – 18 can succeed well into the future. The survey launched has had strong support so far from members who have completed it. If you haven't completed the survey please do so as soon as possible. The results from the survey will be used in the next stage of discussions which will be the focus group. Any Rotarian or Rotaractor who is interested in participating in the focus group is welcome to attend, so far there have been 16 members who have indicated so. With 40 respondents answering the survey to date all have indicated an Interact Club is needed within the community and approximately 23 young adults who may benefit from a club have been suggested from our Rotarians. And last but not least is 85% of respondents have indicated they would support the Interact Club through volunteer hours and mentoring. Youth Service Director Ivana will be setting a date soon for the focus group once more responses are received from the other clubs. If you want to be included please talk with Director Ivana.

How Social Are You?
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

So what is social media any way? For many "senior" Rotary clubs the concept of using social media to communicate Rotary projects and events is an untapped resource because many members don't know what it is. Well, social media is how the younger generations are communicating on a massive level and reaching more people to bring awareness to Rotary's efforts around the world. At Rotary Sunrise, we use Facebook and Twitter on a regular basis to advertise events, club meetings, projects, share information about Rotary International, Rotaract, EarlyAct, etc. You see the more we share the more the public will get to know who we are and what we do but we need you (our members and friends of Rotary) to help spread the news. When the communications committee makes a post and our followers see it they can like it, favour it, re-tweet or share it. When they do this it now gets seen by all of their friends and if they have lots of friends then it may get shared again. It's the multiplying effect and it is fast! If you are not yet on Facebook or Twitter we encourage you to create an account and start to see a whole new world open up (accounts are free).

Here are some examples of how the multiplying effect worked:
  • "Our Literacy Committee donates CI$10,000 to LIFE Cayman to support their efforts to improve literacy…" Was retweeted on Twitter by Yabsta Cayman who has 799 followers
  • "Rotary Sunrise recognizes Interact Week from November 3rd to 9th…" was retweeted on Twitter by New Kingston Rotary Club who has 442 followers
  • "All around the world, September 8 is International Literacy Day! Help us all celebrate by reading to a child…" was retweeted on Twitter by Rotary Club of Mobay Sunrise who has 483 followers
  • Photos about President Kim and Rotarian James being Captured by Rotaract was shared on Facebook by the Rotary Club of Westbank in British Columbia Canada who has 102 followers
  • The Rotary Foundation flow chart was shared on Facebook by the Rotary Club of Cranbrook BC Canada who has 234 followers
And the list goes on and on…

Why Should "I" Recycle?
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

I think every person has the thought "How can I make a difference in the world". Many times we think this has to be a major event for it to be meaningful but the opposite is true. Every resident of the Cayman Islands can make a huge difference with the small act of recycling. Yes, recycling! Think about what you can do for our beautiful islands if you keep recyclables out of the trash and help the environment stay that much cleaner. Start small, try it for a week and see how it makes you feel to know you are doing your part for your home. Start with plastics, glass and aluminum cans and then when you see the impact you are making expand to other items like cardboard, paper and newsprint. Now think if you are doing your part and then the other 54,999 residents do the same what a huge impact that would make. Not only will it keep recyclables out of the landfill but you are now joining the movement to make history and a new way of life in the Cayman Islands. That is definitely one way to make a difference in the world… and it all started with your small act to want to make a positive change. Get with the recycling movement and do the right thing for the place you call home. World recycling day is Saturday, November 15. Guaruma's Fotokids
Submitted by Secretary Gina McBryan

After the Medical Mission by our International Service committee you may have recalled them talking about the Fotokids from Guaruma. Young Photographers of Pico Bonito (Honduras) Fotokids' NGO in Honduras Guaruma, works with communities living on the edge of the national park and uses photography and graphic design to teach environmental education in the Cangrejal river watershed. There are currently 88 students enrolled. Established in the year 2000, after the devastation of Hurricane Mitch, Fotokids scholarship program in Honduras has raised education levels from just 10% of young people continuing their education past the 6th grade primary to over 90%. Our goal is to expand the program to reach out to other poor pueblos in the River Cangrejal watershed pending the resources to do so. Educational Sponsorships are $300 per year and can be paid monthly or annually. All funds go to an individual child's educational expenses, either as a scholarship for secondary school, or to help defray the costs of our courses here (which are free to our students). To learn more visit www.fotokids.org. Attached photo: "Portrait of Two Girls" photographer: David Ixbalan age 18
