Now that Foundation month is over I just like to take a few lines to thank you for your support for the Rotary Foundation.
Throughout November we spent several meetings to discuss the Foundation’s work on Rotary’s 6 areas of focus and how important it is to continue the Polio Plus programme. Rotary Sunrise is very supportive of the Foundation. Early last week Treasurer John transferred to the Foundation the funds that the club had collected from members since 1 July 2014: US$ 3,287 for Polio Plus and US$ 3,403 for the Annual Programme Fund. The Polio Plus donation represents the funds that we collect every week during the meeting, the money we made from the World Greatest Meal at Change-Over night and individual donations from members. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches our contribution 2 for 1, so our club’s contribution resulted in US$ 10,000 for Polio Plus!
Many of our members have stepped up to the plate and donated US$ 100 to the Annual Programme Fund (APF), with that donation they are a Sustaining Member of the Rotary Foundation. The Foundation funds its humanitarian projects in the 6 areas of focus from the APF and our district gets 50% of its donations back for district projects. Please consider a donation of US$ 100, if you are not yet a Sustaining Member.
Last Wednesday’s meeting was another World Greatest Meal; we made US$ 360 from the raffle and fines. With Bill and Melinda Gates’ support this is an additional US$ 1,080 for Polio Plus. Continued funding for polio eradication is essential, if the virus is not controlled, it can re-emerge, so we need to continue this effort until polio is eradicated.
The Christmas season is a time for celebration and sharing, we celebrate the birth of Jesus and we share family and friends. While you do this give some thought to give a present to the Rotary Foundation and make a donation to the Annual Programme Fund, this will help our club to meet its target and the your donation will be well spent on Rotary’s humanitarian projects. You can give your gift to Treasurer John or do it online through Rotary Direct. If you need help, just ask Treasurer John or me.

Junior Achievement Product Production Submitted by Youth Services
Our Junior Achievement group is well into production of their product and getting ready for selling venues within the next couple of weeks. At the last meeting there were balloons, glue and yarn flying all other the place. We are hoping to have enough product ready by our December 10 morning meeting so they can showcase and sell a few of their finished products to any interested Rotarians.
JA Background - Rotary Sunrise, in partnership with Global Directories, sponsor one of the 15 Junior Achievement groups this year. The group of young achievers range in age from 14 to 17 years and the program helps to provide them with exposure to what is needed to run a company. With many roles to play in a company these young entrepreneurs get to experience first hand what is needed and offers invaluable knowledge that will help them if they decide to own and operate their own business as an adult. These teenagers are our next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Please join us on Wednesday, December 3 for our special guest speaker, Ms. Nicola Williams, Complaints Commissioner for the Cayman Islands. Ms. Williams will be speaking on the purpose and work of the Office of the Complaints Commissioner.
The Office of the Complaints Commissioner was created to encourage government departments and agencies to better serve the public. It is an independent Office which answers only to the Legislative Assembly through the Speaker. The aim is to investigate in a fair and independent manner complaints against government to ascertain whether injustice has been caused by improper, unreasonable, or inadequate government administrative conduct, and to ascertain the inequitable or unreasonable nature or operation of any enactment or rule of law. The role of the Office of the Complaints Commissioner of the Cayman Islands was created in July 2004 to encourage government departments and agencies to better serve the public. It is an independent Office, which answers only to the Legislative Assembly as a whole through the Speaker.
Fred Speirs Inter School Debates - 1st Debate Update Submitted by Literacy Committee
The 1st debate of the Fred Speirs Inter Schools Debates was held on Wednesday November 19th with 4 debates being contested.
The winning teams were:

Cayman Prep (as Triple C pulled out at last minute)
Cayman Academy
CIS A-Team (last year's winner)
St. Ignatius (goes through as a wild card being the losing team with the most points)
The debates were between:
Clifton Hunter vs. Layman Scott
Cayman Prep vs. Triple C (Triple C pulled out so CIS A-Team filled in)
John Gray vs. CIS B-Team
St. Ignatius vs. Cayman Academy
* CIS A-Team had a bye as last year's winner
The moot for the debate was: There should be random drug testing for all high schools in the Cayman Islands.
As usual the debates were great but it seemed that more time and effort was spent preparing for this first debate as the quality was very good right from the start. Some years it takes the young debaters a little time to really get into their 'groove'. The next debate will be held in January or early February as we could not find a time that all of the schools could agree on with their very busy schedules.
We are always looking for judges and time keepers as well as people in the audience. So, if you have not been involved in a debate before, think about it.
Volunteers Needed for Community Christmas Parties

The Community Christmas Parties will be hosted in a few weeks’ time. This is our Club's annual Christmas charity event to provide a Christmas party and presents for the elderly and children that are less fortunate and would otherwise not have the opportunity to share in the festivities of Christmas.
We are seeking volunteers to assist with hosting, serving food and distributing presents to the elderly and children at each party. See below for details re the venues and times for the respective parties:

Rotary Reindeer Invasion

Now that we have rolled into December, I'm sure everyone is starting to feel in the holiday mood. To continue the support of the Rotary Foundation from November, you will find cute little Rotary Reindeers placed at your table at this week's meeting. These reindeer clips can be used as decorations for your Christmas tree, gift toppers or and some of them as fridge magnets to hold important notes over the holidays. If you would like to take one home with you we are asking for a small donation that will go directly to the Rotary Foundation, simply place your donation in the back pocket of the table card. We hope these little reindeers adds some Christmas cheer to our first December meeting and helps to get you in the mood for the holiday season.
"Sixteen Chickens on a Trampoline" Submitted by Rotarian Faye Lippitt
Remember the old woman who lived in a shoe – so many kids she didn’t know what to do? Well update the shoe, sign the old woman up for Rotary and she’ll tell you what she did with the kids.
“Sixteen Chickens On A Trampoline” is a compilation of short stories Faye Lippitt published in a monthly Canadian magazine. By the time she and husband Greg had six teens (including in the mix, two sets of twins) careening off the walls, she had enough stories to fill a book.
It was when they were little that the craziness reached its peak. The title of the book comes from one of the stories which involved the gang of six, some neighbor kids, the family flock and a trampoline. You can imagine the rest. Or you can purchase the book and read why laughter is the best medicine when raising kids.
The book is meant for busy parents and grand parents who often don’t have time to read a book but can manage about five minutes for a quick chapter. More importantly, it is meant to inspire them to write their own chapters, or even one-liners about the funny events in the household. There are blank pages at the back to get them started on their own books.
Perhaps the most important message in the book is discovering the magic of choice. When it comes to the shenanigans that children get up to, you can laugh, or you can yell or cry. Laughter feels so much better than tears – for everyone.
“Sixteen Chickens On A Trampoline” is available at Fosters Airport and the Strand, at Books N Books and from the old woman herself, who you will find at Rotary meetings. The book costs $12.95. All profits from sales will go to our Literacy Committee. Makes a good Christmas gift!

Rotarians are reminded to provide information about meeting make-ups if they find their attendance percentage is slipping below the 50% mark. Secretary Gina tries to ensure all credit is applied from known committee meetings, service events and fellowships but it is ultimately each Rotarian's responsibility to provide information about other events you've attended that may qualify for credit. Please note, the LIFE Reading program and LIFE Board Meetings do quality for credit should you participate in these events. As we are nearing the half way point in this Rotary year, it is important that credit be applied for those Rotarians who have participated in Rotary events for regular missed meetings as it does have an affect on our club's statistics as seen by District and RI. For any Rotarians who currently have an attendance percentage of 50% or less, please expect an email from Secretary Gina or Membership Director Barbara and should you have events for credit please have those dates and event names ready.
