The President's Corner - New Generations Month
Submitted by President Kim Remizowski

The month of September is designated as New Generations or Youth Services month and RI President Gary C.K. Huang says it best that our young leaders of today will be our future leaders of tomorrow. So we need to be involved in nurturing those relationships and help them understand the importance of “Service above Self”.

District 7020 DG Paul Brown’s New Generation message is “Inspire Youth…Build Rotary” and we’re excited to promote New Generations since it involves our youth in Cayman and more specifically the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and our Early Act club from the George Town Primary School.
During the September 3rd breakfast meeting we will hear from Rotaract President Stephanie Rattan and Club Services Director Julissa Castillo about their experience at RYLA (Rotary Young Leadership Awards) Conference in Washington, DC which they attended in early August.

On September 10th we will have our regular business meeting but our think tank is working together right now on how we can involve our members in another “bingo type” event – Youth related….so STAY TUNED.
We’ll continue to carry the New Generations theme to September 17th by having the Rotaract Club take the podium and deliver a first class regular weekly meeting. Bring lots of cash for fines!!! This year, the Rotaract club appears to be very active and each week on average three to four Rotaractors attend our meetings. That is a major commitment because they generally attend their own Thursday morning meetings as well. Sunrise members on the other hand have been reciprocating with an average of three per Rotaract meeting this year and five members in attendance last week. I am encouraging all Sunrisers that have never been to a Rotaract meeting to give it a try and especially if you happen to miss our Wednesday morning meeting. It counts as a make-up and you’ll probably see one or two of your fellow Rotarians there. Witness the energy, feel the enthusiasm and envy the fellowship of this dynamic group. You won’t be disappointed!!! The Rotaractors meet at 7am on Thursday mornings at Overtime restaurant at the Strand.

The spot light turns to Junior Achievement (JA) on the last Wednesday of the month, September 24th. David Reid has been involved with this part of New Generations for a number of years and we thank him for his generous support. David and this year’s trustful advisors; Howard Cross, Ian Comins and Gina McBryan will provide the leadership to make this year’s JA company sponsored by Rotary Sunrise, a professional and successful enterprise. We can’t wait to hear what product they’re selling this year. We’ll also hear from the leader of last year’s JA group and maybe even a bit on Biz Town JA in Jamaica.  David is always looking for more volunteers/advisors, so if you can commit a total of thirty six hours (two hours a week) from October to March isn’t that worth the investment in our future entrepreneurs.

That rounds out the month for New Generations. What an action packed month it will be. Now let’s get involved with our Rotaract and Earlyact clubs and light up Rotary and the future of Rotary Sunrise!

New Generations Month - Message from RI President
Submitted by Rotary International

One of the great privileges of being president of Rotary International is having the chance to visit so many parts of the Rotary world. Usually I travel to participate in Rotary events; speak at Rotary clubs, conferences, and institutes; and encourage Rotarians in their service. But as president, I am responsible for all branches of the Rotary family. This means that it is also my privilege to support the service of Rotary's youngest generations: our Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards participants.
When I see the work Rotarians do, I am always impressed, always excited, and always inspired. When I see the work of our New Generations, I am all of this – and frequently I am surprised as well. Not by the quality of their work – for I have learned to expect great things from them – but by the creativity and ingenuity of their thinking. I look at what they have done and think not just "What a great job!" but "What a great idea!" Because every generation sees the world in a unique way, and every individual has a unique point of view. Faced with the same problems, we arrive at different solutions. This is why, in Rotary, our diversity – of culture, language, expertise, gender, and age – is our strength.
In Rotary, we try to take the long view in our service. We aspire to serve in ways that will make a lasting difference, that will continue to have an impact after our participation ends. Our younger generations, in my experience, share this sentiment, and apply it globally, by focusing on environmental issues in new and innovative ways. When I became a Rotarian, environmental issues were barely on our radar. To young people today, these concerns are front and center. Their perspective is a valuable contribution to the world of Rotary service, and it is one that we should all encourage and support. Just as they are learning from us, so should we be learning from them.
The young people who are serving in Rotaract and Interact, and participating in Youth Exchange and RYLA today, are the Rotarians of tomorrow. When we support them, we are supporting the future of our entire organization. We are helping to train the men and women who will be the club presidents, district governors, RI directors, and RI presidents of tomorrow.
Rotary Awareness & Joint Membership Drive
Submitted by Secretary Gina

On Friday, August 29 we had our first Joint Rotary/Rotaract Awareness presentation to a small group of DMS employees. The joint initiative was launched in July with the three Rotary clubs and two Rotaract clubs in support of this effort. The presentation was 30 minutes in length and covered off the general basics of who we are, what we do in the community and internationally and how anyone can get involved as a "Friend" of the club or look to become a member. There were a potential of 4 prospective Rotaract members and 2 prospective Rotary members.

Rotaract GC Community Service Director Pierre Connolly and Rotary Sunrise Youth Chair Ivana Faltysova were present during the presentation as they are employees of DMS and would act as sponsors for any interested people looking to visit a meeting. Also present was former Rotarian Adrean Russell who had positive comments to share in support of Rotary.

All participants in addition to our presentation contact Janelle Muttoo, who is also a prospective member for Rotaract Grand Cayman, seemed to welcome the presentation and had several questions of interest about each of the clubs after presentation. Ms. Muttoo is interested in having us back in a couple of months to do more presentations as there were other employees who she feels would benefit from getting more information and learn how they can get involved.

As our joint initiative is focused on making presentations at businesses where we already have Rotarians or Rotaractors working at the organization, this allows for follow up discussions to easily take place as well as having an automatic sponsor relationship should the person be interested in seeking membership with any of the clubs. A sign up sheet will be in circulation at this Wednesday's meeting to obtain contact details from any member who would like to have us come in and make the presentation to your organization.

Again, this is a joint initiative is supported by all clubs on Grand Cayman and similar requests are being made by the other clubs so we can schedule the presentations throughout the Rotary year. If, out of this endeavour, we don't recruit any new members what we will achieve is being able to bring more Rotary and Rotaract awareness to the local community. Please support our initiative and provide contact details for your organization so we can schedule the next presentations. Contact Secretary Gina for more information if you are interested gina@rotarysunrise.ky.

Community Service Project - Let's Get Dirty!
Submitted by Community Service Committee

Fellow Rotarians, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, put on those gloves, pick up those shovels and get busy with our first hands-on Community Service project for the year. We will be assisting the Scranton Community with their Scranton Beautification project this Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at 7am - 10am. The Scranton Beautification Committee has asked us to assist with laying top soil, digging holes, planting trees and flowers, removing debris and much more.  A few of us will also be cooling down from the hard work after by participating in the ALS ice-bucket challenge. More details will be provided at this Wednesday’s meeting.

Rotaractors Present on RYLA 2014
Submitted by Secretary Gina

The month of September is themed "New Generations" and to help us introduce the theme we have our two Rotaract representatives who attended RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Conference in Washington DC. Rotaract President Stephanie Rattan and Club Service Director Julissa Castillo attended the 5 day conference in early August and will present their trip highlights at this Wednesday's meeting.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 14-30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club's district committee. Participants are chosen for their leadership potential. Rotary Clubs and the Rotary District cover all expenses for the participants. The format of the event vary from district to district, but commonly take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.

RYLA aims to:
  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities
  • Every RYLA program covers the following core topics:
  • Fundamentals of leadership
  • Ethics of positive leadership
  • Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
  • Problem-solving and conflict management
  • Rotary's purpose and service to the community
  • Building self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Elements of community and global citizenship
Please join us to show our support of the Rotary Youth programs, help to launch New Generations month and promote our District 7020 theme "Inspire Youth…Build Rotary".
Prizes & Scorers Needed for LIFE's Scrabble Scrum
Submitted by Pat Kreitlow

The LIFE fundraising event is drawing near and while we have had a great response with teams signing up, we still need help with prizes and volunteers to be scoretakers for the event on Sept 10th.
The prizes can be low-cost and fun! Examples of prizes which can be given are:
  • A pair of movie passes, some boxed candy and microwave popcorn;
  • A bottle(s) of wine, some cheese and crackers;
  • A couple childrens books and a gift card for more books;
  • A board game, a deck of cards and a cribbage board;
  • Gift cards for gasoline, car wash soap and sponges, car air freshener.
I hope this gives you an idea of the things we are looking for. If you don't have time to buy an item, it's ok we can do it for you...we'll accept cash donations as well!
Volunteer Scorers
What does it mean to be a Volunteer Scorer?  Well, we basically need help from people who can monitor one or two teams and help them total up their board after each round. Feel free to correct teams about misspelling as they play, maybe even drop a friendly suggestion.

If you are able to volunteer as a scorer or donate a prize, please bring it to the next meeting or contact Rotarian Pat Kreitlow before Sept 10th.
It's Hard to Say Goodbye
Submitted by Secretary Gina

Sometimes life takes our members in different directions and we must say goodbye for now but not farewell. Please note both Olson Anderson and Mark Macfee have resigned from the club but wish to remain as friends of Rotary. We wish them well and hope their path leads back to Rotary some time in the future.
