Enter Mothers: In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution that made the second Sunday in May a holiday in honor of “that tender, gentle army, the mothers of America.”
Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products–often paid for by the father himself.
Enter Retailers:
It was during the depression that struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards.
Enter Nixon:
In 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s Day a federal holiday at last. The day became a nationwide holiday in the United States.
Enter Today:
Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts.

Save Your Clothes For Guaruma
Once again our Club's International Committee is organising a trip to Guaruma and need your help. Both medical and non-medical personnel will be leaving for the weekend of September 9th, returning the 12th, and this time visiting two towns: Las Mangas and El Pital. They are asking for things that you may have in your home that to parents and children in Honduras, are beyond their ability to purchase. Please have a look at the list and consider donating.

Culinary Camp
Camp starts this week for Culinary Camp, and administrator James Myles will be our speaker on Wednesday to give us the highlights.
Rotary Sunrise is sponsoring the camp which has been offered by the Youth Services Unit. Baking 202 will focus on such things as baking bread, cake, and cupcakes, while pastry chef Harif will teach sugar craft and cake decorating for 16 Intermediate Teen Bakers. Our contribution of $1,788.00 will go toward student funding as well as a showcase and participant award presentation.
August MMM
On Tuesday August 9th P.P. Christine Mathews hosted her MMM (Monthly Mentoring Meeting). It happened to also be a significant birthday for her that same day.
As well as a large contingent of Rotaractors, nine Rotarians attended the evening event that featured nurse Kathy Corley who gave us valuable information for emergency situations. Nurse Corley is a Canadian who has thirty years experience in her field. She works at Seven Mile Clinic.

Changeover Night
Come join us to help celebrate the changing of the guard from President Christine to incoming President Dawn, and the installation of the 2016/17 Board of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise. The evening is an opportunity for our members and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the current Rotary year, to look forward to 'Serving Humanity', and to 'Be The Change' in District 7020!
Its time to let loose and have some fun! We will recognize our 'Rookie of the Year', 'Rotarian of the Year', 'Perfect Attendance', and there will of course be dancing - so bring your moves!
To help cut down on the bottle neck at the beginning of the evening - we're asking that you please arrange payment ahead of time to Treasurer John, or online at our Butterfield Operations account. Our Greeter will be overjoyed!
To help us celebrate, Vico and the team at Pappagallo have put together a wonderful evening, with a welcome glass of "bubbly", and a 4 course meal with wine.
Dress is semi-formal - jackets for the gentlemen and cocktail or long dresses for the ladies.

If members are unable to make a regular weekly meeting or Rotary event, make-ups can be done online. The e-Club website is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You just need to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on the site and answer some questions to get the make up certificate.
Traveling: If you are going to be traveling for an extended period of time (more than two weeks), be sure to let the Secretary know and remember to submit any make-ups you do in a timely manner.
