Last week in The Rotary Sun, an article was published about the framing of the photos for the Guaruma fundraising event. Please note that the framing project was held at Rotarian John Lee's home and not Rotarian Irene Gut's as previously indicated. We apologize for this error.

Guaruma Photo Exhibition Fundraiser A Success
Submitted by Communications

The George Town Yacht Club restaurant was a buzz for the Gauruma photo exhibition fundraising event which took place on Wednesday, April 22nd. Rotarians and guests viewed the amazing photos along with the artist bios and what inspired them. There were many photos to choose from and different subject matters such as water, flowers, rocks, people and animals. The photos were displayed on black mat boards, wrapped in clear cellophane with the artist bio included. The asking prices were 1 for $40, 2 for $75 and 3 for $100 and many in attendance purchased 3 or more!

President Kim auctioned off a great prize for the night which was was a 2 night stay in a suite at Morritt's Resort in East End, the highest bid went to PP, Andrea Bryan!
In all the event raised about US $4,000. For those who were not able to join us that night, there are still a few images for sale. Contact Rotarian John Lee or Pat Steward for more information.

Charter Night is set for Wednesday, April 15th at Mizu Restaurant, Camana Bay. The event will run from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. This is an opportunity to celebrate our 13th birthday and award those in the community who engage in the same motto as Rotary  "Service Above Self".

This is the first time we are holding our Charter Night at Mizu Restaurant and we're told by the Manager, Steve Shienfield that Rotarians will not be disappointed in the selection, quality and quantity of appetizers. The appetizers will be a mixture of menu items from Mizu and Waterfront restaurants.

Cost is CI $25 which covers food and the venue.

Alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages can be ordered directly from the bar, and it will be a cash bar.

This is our 13 year anniversary and President Kim would be extremely grateful if you could attend.

Calling All Rotarians!
Submitted by Fundraising Committee

Dear Rotarians, Your Club needs YOU!!

Casino Night is all set for Saturday 6th June at the ARC and we need all hands on "deck" to ensure a successful evening.

Rotarian Martha designed a flyer and this will be available for distribution this week with tickets available shortly thereafter.

President Kim, Rotarian Perry and myself are busy planning all of the logistics of the evening.

We need volunteers before the event to help with silent auction and live auction prizes and ticket distribution amongst other things.

On the day, we wil need help in the morning with set-up including decorations, tables and chairs and preparing everything for our guests in the evening.

During the actual event we will need help with registration, the raffle, the silent auction table, dealing and so much more!

Of course we will also need help after the event clearing up.

So we will be tapping people on the shoulder to assist but if you would like to volunteer please let me know and for which task.

Also please let me know if you will be on island that weekend.

Many hands make light work and it does take everyone working together to make this event a success. We need the funds raised at this event to help finance the projects and causes we want to support next year.

These include sponsoring a youth summer camp, a youth crime prevention day, the first ever RYLA conference in Cayman, our ongoing support of literacy projects including new projects like adopting a school library and not to be forgotten our support of organizations like Feed Our Future and the NCVO. The funds will also help with our International Projects including water wells in Cambodia and supporting the Guaruma community in Honduras.

I trust I can rely on your support so that we can all have a successful year next year.

Kind regards,
President Elect, Christine Matthews

Polio Vaccine Celebrates 60th Anniversary
Submitted from Rotary International

Sunday, 12 April, marks 60 years since the Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries remaining polio-endemic, we are closer than ever to eradicating this crippling disease.

Jonas Salk’s inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has been crucial in helping us reach our goal of a polio-free world. Before the vaccine was widely available, in the United States alone, polio crippled more than 35,000 people each year. By 1957 -- two years after the introduction of Salk’s vaccine -- cases in the U.S. had fallen by almost 90 percent, and by 1979, polio had been eradicated there.

The impact on the rest of the world has taken longer. In 1988, when Rotary International launched the (GPEI) with its partners at the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, polio continued to cripple children in 125 countries. Today, polio remains endemic in only three: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. And it has been more than eight months since Nigeria’s last case, making a polio-free Africa a real possibility.

Salk’s vaccine will play an important role in the end-game strategy against polio when 120 countries introduce IPV into their routine polio immunization systems this year. Leading that effort are the GPEI partners and , a global vaccine alliance, along with Sanofi Pasteur, the largest manufacturer of polio vaccine.

“As more than 120 countries in the world are introducing IPV, we are beginning the last chapter on polio eradication,” said Olivier Charmeil, Sanofi Pasteur’s chief executive officer. “At Sanofi Pasteur, we have had a long-term vision of IPV as the ultimate public health tool able to finish the job started with Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).”
