More than one million Rotarians worldwide have contributed to the success of the polio eradication effort.
Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.
The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

Rotary Central and Rotary Sunrise Host Final of the 23rd Annual Fred Speirs Memorial Inerschool Debate
Press Release Submitted by PP Woody
The Fred Speirs Memorial Interschool Debate Final was held on Wednesday April 10th at the Georgetown Courthouse. The Moot being "The declaration of specific Jobs and Businesses which should be reserved for Caymanians only is better than a system of market-driven free enterprise capitalism.” In a wonderful and very close debate with passionate and rousing arguments from students representing Cayman International School, the proposers, and John Gray High School, the Opposers, CIS pulled off a win over JGHS.
A special thanks to British Caymanian Insurance, who sponsors this event annually. In addition, we would like to thank the judges. Ms. Nicola Williams, Complaints Commissioner of the Cayman Islands, Ms. P. Natalia Turnquest, Chair Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and Mr. Len Layman Past President Rotary Central as well as time keeper Philip Manyah and MC PP Mario Ebanks.
The interschool debates competition was founded by Fred Spiers. As Past President and all around model Rotarian, Fred was the energy behind the organization of the Inter-school Debate Competition. We remember and honor Past President Fred Speirs for his contribution to education, the Cayman community and Rotary International.

Why We Do It
Submitted by President J.D. Mosley-Matchett
I tip my hat to all Past Presidents of Rotary clubs.
Having never served as President, I'm frankly overwhelmed by the proliferation of documentation that is required to demonstrate the utility and effectiveness of all the hard work our club has performed over the past year.
Of course, I have always known that we work hard as Sunrise Rotarians. But sometimes, when you are busy "doing" you miss out on the multiple impacts your work may generate.
For example, we saw from our Club-of-the-Month award-winning efforts last month that the literacy committee spent an enormous number of hours collecting funds for books, spreading reading technology via CALS, and reading to/with youngsters to share the joy of literacy.
But it wasn't until I was required to consider how Sunrise was actively combating the problem of "youth at risk" that it became clear our literacy efforts are central to the battle to save young people from a life of crime.
Similarly, I knew that Sunrise Past Presidents have always encouraged members to contribute to the Rotary Foundation. As PDG Alastair Paterson loves to note, "It's OUR foundation, so we MUST support it." Yet it took a successful effort by DG Jeremy Hurst to make this year the first time in history that every club in District 7020 contributed to the Rotary Foundation.
And in response to the DG's request, this is the first time that Rotary Sunrise has become a "100% giving" club. For those few Sunrise members who did not personally contribute at least $10 KYD to the Rotary Foundation, this year's Sunrise Board unanimously voted to contribute the required amount to the Foundation in the name of those members...much the same as a Paul Harris award may be funded in the name of a recipient.
"Every Rotarian Every Year" has been a mantra that's been uttered since the founding of our club. In this Rotary year, it has finally become a reality!
So, at next week's District 7020 Conference, the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise will receive public recognition for its work with Youth At Risk and for being an EREY "First Class Club."
But of course, we don't do what we do for awards and recognition.
We do it to make the world a better place.
Engage Rotary...Change Lives
Key Guest Speaker: Recycling Chair Gina McBryan
Topic: Earth Day 2014 & Recycling in Cayman
"Every year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. From San Francisco to San Juan, Beijing to Brussels, Moscow to Marrakesh, people plant trees, clean up their communities, contact their elected officials, and more—all on behalf of the environment.
Like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2014 will focus on the unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create sustainable communities is more important than ever. Earth Day 2014 will seek to do just that through its global theme: Green Cities. With smart investments in sustainable technology, forward-thinking public policy, and an educated and active public, we can transform our cities and forge a sustainable future. Nothing is more powerful than the collective action of a billion people." courtesy of www.earthday.org
Back in May 2013 President Kadi Merren of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman contacted the Presidents of the Rotary and Lions Clubs on island about starting a joint initiative to do a project together that was too big for any of the clubs to do on their own. Immediately all club Presidents were on board and together they decided recycling was an important issue that they felt residence needed more information on to make it easier to reduce and reuse! The initiative was coined Join In - Recycle!
To help continue to inform and update our club members as well as finding a way to do our part for Earth Day, Rotarian Gina McBryan will help to educate, enlighten and engage members to take action to continue the recycling trends in their homes and businesses.
Please join us on Wednesday at 7am to hear this very interactive presentation and learn more about how you can Join In and make Cayman a better place.
Rotary Sunrise Recognized for Literacy Awareness Month
Congratulations to all of the members who played a part in helping our club to achieve a second place standing within the District for the month of March. As you know March was Literacy Awareness month and as a result of earning a second place standing our club will receive extra points towards the District Governor's award.
March concludes the Club of the Month recognition for the Rotary year 2013-2014 but we'll get a chance to do it all over again starting August 2014.
Rotary Sunrise - In The News
Submitted by Director Gina McBryan, Communications/PR
Rotary Sunrise has a few press releases pending for media publication but our club was recently mentioned in an article published by the Caymanian Compass highlighting the GT Public Library reading competition.
The article begins,
In an effort to improve literacy for school-age students, George Town Public Library hosted a reading competition on Saturday.
Students were asked to choose a favorite fiction story and create a storyboard to take to the competition.
Bodden Town Primary School student Kaylie Parchman received first prize – a Kindle e-reader – for her reading project about “Nancy Drew, Girl Detective.”
“The purpose of the reading fair is to encourage reading and reading comprehension,” said Ashley Welch, program coordinator at Cayman Islands Information Professionals. “Students are given the opportunity to share a favorite book in the form of a storyboard and then present for their peers. It encourages students to try new books and authors and demonstrate their reading interests and creativity,” she said.
Special Edition Newsletter - Advertising Opportunity
Submitted by Communications Director Gina
Next week we will have a Special Edition newsletter in honor of our District 7020 Host Luncheon. Next week's newsletter will highlight some of our signature projects and events that took place throughout 2013-2014. As there will be an estimated 300 Rotarians present for the luncheon we will be printing copies of the newsletter to share and have as take-aways.
To help with the extra-ordinary printing cost, if there are any members who would like to advertise their business website and logo within the newsletter we are asking for $25 per ad. This is a fantastic price knowing that our newsletter will be taken across the district and seen by more members then just those who are attending the luncheon. Any interested Rotarians please email gina@rotarysunrise.ky before Saturday, April 26th.
Thank you for your support - Engage Rotary...Change Lives.

Please take note, during the District Conference all 3 Rotary Clubs on Grand Cayman will be required to hold special club meetings in combination with the District Conference luncheons. Rotary Sunrise will meet on Wednesday, April 30 but instead of our regular morning meeting we will have a lunch meeting from noon to 1:30pm. Time for meal eating and extended fellowship will be incorporated into the agenda.
