Changeover Night

It was a fine night for the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman this past Friday at Pappagallos Restaurant.

Salute to the Chief
Running the club is not an easy job and often a thankless one. We take this opportunity to thank President Christine for her tireless year's work. Printed here is part of her
farewell speech.

Fellow Rotarians and Guests – Good Evening.
It hardly seems like a year ago that I was standing here accepting the gavel from IPP Kim! Time flies when you are having fun!
At the start of the year we were challenged by President Ravi to, “Be A Gift To The World”, and by DG Felix to move from “Success to Significance”, and I believe we have risen to the challenges.
Rotary is a family and like the head of all families, and all Presidents before me, I have been faced with challenges, some sad times and times when I just wanted to run away! But there have also been joyous occasions and good times and there has been way more fun and laughter than tears!
I have some fond memories of the last 12 months and I beg indulgence for two minutes while I share my favourites.
  • Distributing dictionaries to students, and discussing “Rotary’s role as an NGO (their choice not mine!)
  • Rotarians laughing on swings with kids and playing catch. Sunrise is young at heart!
  • Three generations of Rotary: Sunrise, RCGC and EarlyAct, together in service and fellowship at the Pines, walking dogs, puppy washing and cupcakes and lemonade.
  • Images from Guaruma, through the service of medical professionals and others making a difference to lives of people in that community
  • Mentoring evenings with the amazing group of future Sunrise members
  • Gifts of time and service at our events and activities bringing smiles and hugs
Rotary years are often referred to by the name of the President so while history will refer to this year as President Christine's year, this has not been my year. This has been our year as each and every one of you made a contribution.
Thank you to everyone who willingly said “yes” when asked to help. Even though she is not here this evening I do need to say thank you to my boss, Dr. Sook Yin, for sharing me with Rotary and for supporting my activities over the past 12 months.
As some of you know this has been a challenging year for me personally outside of my Rotary life. The love of my life, who also happens to be my Rotary sponsor and mentor, has been progressing further along the Parkinsons Disease path. His spirit is always willing but the mind and the body are failing which has made for interesting times and challenges and its share of laughter and tears. It has meant I have not always been able to do all I have wanted to do but thank you for your support.
I need to say a special thank you to my Board. Thank you all for always being there for me and for often adapting your schedules to accommodate me.
Dawn thank you for always being there. I am confident that the Club will be in good hands with you and that you will ably lead us in the year ahead. To quote Dr. Seuss, “you are off to great places, today is your day” I wish us all a successful year ahead.
As the year comes to an end, it isn’t a time for tears. Instead it’s a time to smile because it happened.

Culinary Camp

Camp starts this week for Culinary Camp, and administrator James Myles will be our speaker on Wednesday to give us the highlights.
Rotary Sunrise is sponsoring the camp which has been offered by the Youth Services Unit. Baking 202 will focus on such things as baking bread, cake, and cupcakes, while pastry chef Harif will teach sugar craft and cake decorating for 16 Intermediate Teen Bakers. Our contribution of $1,788.00 will go toward student funding as well as a showcase and participant award presentation.

How To Raise Our Funds
Our June 15th meeting focused on how the club might be able to fundraise. It was pointed out that many are disillusioned with selling car raffle tickets, and although having a Casino Night is well received by the public, many found organising it and cleaning up afterward to be difficult and time consuming. For this reason, our fund raising committee suggested that we consider individual fund raising efforts, whereby each individual would raise funds. They advised Rotarians to look at their lives and consider how you might be able to raise the needed $1500.
A lot of discussion ensued, with many voicing their opposition to the individual fundraising idea. Meanwhile we await the new Fundraising Committee's ideas.
Some individual fundraising ideas follow:

Have a cooking competition
Organise a poker night (we still have tables)
Be waiters for the night at a restaurant and pool tips.
Have a dinner party at your home and let guests know funds are for charity.
Go on a diet and get sponsors to pay for pounds lost.
Ask for cash for you birthday instead of gifts.
Have a garage sale with other Rotarians.
Have a bartending competition.
Get sponsors for your next marathon/triathlon.
Have a bake sale and invite Rotarians, or bring baked goods to our meeting.
Ask your boss for the money.

Save Your Clothes For Guaruma

Once again our Club's International Committee is organising a trip to Guaruma and need your help. Both medical and non-medical personnel will be leaving for the weekend of September 9th, returning the 12th, and this time visiting two towns: Las Mangas and El Pital. They are asking for things that you may have in your home that to parents and children in Honduras, are beyond their ability to purchase. Please have a look at the list and consider donating.

August MMM

On Tuesday August 9th P.P. Christine Mathews hosted her MMM (Monthly Mentoring Meeting). It happened to also be a significant birthday for her that same day.

As well as a large contingent of Rotaractors, nine Rotarians attended the evening event that featured nurse Kathy Corley who gave us valuable information for emergency situations. Nurse Corley is a Canadian who has thirty years experience in her field. She works at Seven Mile Clinic.
