Ordering Breakfast on Wednesday?

Due to the GT Yacht Club now open to the public for breakfast, Club Members are being asked to place their breakfast orders with the wait staff at the register by the coffee station. This will not only speed the ordering process but you will receive your meal faster. In addition, if the water jug at your table needs a refill, kindly have someone bring it to the coffee station for a top up.

The management of GTYC thanks you for your assistance

What is the Red Badge Checklist?
Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.
  1. Be Greeter
  2. Four Way Test
  3. Complete New Member Training Session
  4. Getting to Know You Talk
  5. Prepare bio for publication in the Sun
  6. Do a make-up at another club (locally or internationally)
  7. Update your profile on the web-site
There are also 11 optional tasks but the 7 listed above are mandatory and it is suggested to aim at completing the list within a 6 month period (but that is only a suggestion). For more information about the Red Badge Checklist or any new member information please visit our website home page under "For New Members" on the menu bar.

Celebrating 12 Years of Service
Submitted by Director Gina

Members, friends and family who came out on Thursday, April 10 at Grand Old House to help us celebrate our 12th year of Charter enjoyed a wonderful evening of drinks, appies, fellowship and announcements.

There were many highlights to the evening but one of them was recognizing our active Charter Members who were present at the celebrations. It is always a pleasure to acknowledge those members who helped formed the club so many years ago and to know they are still actively engaged today. As our official Charter date falls on Friday, April 18 please take a moment to acknowledge our Charter members at this Wednesday's meeting.

Caring for Life Foundation
Submitted by VP Christine

The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise is pleased to have presented the Caring For Life Foundation with a cheque for CI$5,000 during our Charter Night celebration on Thursday, April 10. This donation is being made to the Foundation’s designated fund to purchase a non-emergency transportation vehicle for patients with appointments at Health Services Authority (H.S.A.) facilities. The Sunrise logo will be featured on the van in recognition of this donation. Accepting the donation on behalf of Caring for Life Foundation was Ms. Sarah Hobbs, who also expressed her appreciation to Rotary Sunrise for our support.

The Caring For Life Foundation was created in 2010 and former Sunrise Rotarian Bruce John was instrumental in its establishment. It is modeled after other hospital foundations around the world and is Cara charitable trust independent of the Government and the H.S.A. Its primary goal is to purchase needed equipment to improve the services offered by the H.S.A. Needs are identified in close consultation with the management of the H.S.A.

The van that will be purchased will be used to transport patients to and from appointments such as chemotherapy and dialysis and it will be able to accommodate several patients both ambulatory and in wheelchairs. Currently patients needing assistance with transportation are transported using a regular ambulance which can only transport one patient at a time, and results in increase wear and tear and maintenance on these essential emergency vehicles and increased response times in instances of genuine emergency.

The Foundation will also be seeking to raise funds to equip a new operating room at the Cayman Islands (GT) Hospital.

For more information on the Foundation you can speak to PE Kim or VP Christine both of whom are on the Foundation’s Board of Advisors or visit the website at www.caringforlife.ky/

What the Prez Sez...
Let's Have a "New Blood" Drive...
Submitted by President J.D. Mosley-Matchett

Sunrise needs new blood. So, let's have a "new blood" drive!

The idea came to me as I was chatting with one of our AWESOME past presidents at the Charter Celebration last Thursday evening on the deck at Grand Old House.

He was talking about a really nice couple...friends of his. And I remarked that they sounded like excellent prospective Sunrise members.

As he enthusiastically agreed, his astonishment was genuine. He had no idea why the idea of asking them out to a meeting hadn't occurred to him.

Another Sunrise board member noted that one of our AWESOME new Sunrisers only had a chance to be invited to a club meeting after observing other Sunrisers photocopying our weekly newsletter. The members hadn't thought to invite him...he essentially had to do the asking himself.

Which makes we wonder how many other great prospective members are out there among our friends and co-workers might be waiting for an opportunity to be invited to help our community and our world through "Service Above Self" and we just never thought about offering an invitation?

So, here's my challenge to you...

Is there someone you know or work with who has time on their hands and a good heart? (Okay, scratch the "time on their hands" part...no one has that luxury these days!)

If so, just invite that friend or co-worker to breakfast. On Wednesday morning. At GTYC. Bright and early.

What's the worst that can happen? The person might not be an early riser. Or might have other commitments.

Or, the person just might say yes and be the focus of our next induction ceremony!

Contribute to the Sunrise "New Blood" Drive.

Engage Rotary...Change Lives.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 Rotary Peace Fellowships. This is an extremely valuable opportunity for worthy applicants to pursue fully funded post graduate studies at one of the six Rotary Peace Centres for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution at seven universities worldwide. Rotary Peace Fellows earn either a Professional Development Certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies, or a Masters Degree in International Relations, Sustainable Development, Peace Studies or Conflict Resolution.

Fellowship funding covers:
  • Tuition and fees
  • Room and board
  • Round trip transportation
  • Internship (master’s degree) or field study expenses (professional development certificates)
These are valuable opportunities which are available to young persons in our District who are seeking to further their studies and as Rotarians, it is our duty to promote them and encourage applications from suitable candidates. Rotaract members and former Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars are also eligible to apply.

The suitable candidates should submit the completed applications to their respective sponsoring clubs where they will be checked for completeness, endorsed and forwarded to the Rotary Sunrise board who will in turn submit the application to the District 7020, Peace Fellowships Sub-Committee by June 1st 2014.

Special Rotary Sunrise Meeting - April 30th
Submitted by Director Gina McBryan, supporting District 7020 Conference Activities

Please take note, during the District Conference all 3 Rotary Clubs on Grand Cayman will be required to hold special club meetings in combination with the District Conference luncheons. Rotary Sunrise will meet on Wednesday, April 30 but instead of our regular morning meeting we will have a lunch meeting from noon to 1:30pm. Even though this meeting is a longer duration of time, it is in combination with the district luncheon at the Westin and will cater to potentially 600 Rotarians. Time for meal eating and extended fellowship will be incorporated into the agenda. There is a US$40 cost to lunch on top of the conference registration fee but you will quickly learn the value far exceeds what you will gain in return.

This is a one of a kind opportunity to fellowship with other Rotarians across the district. Click here to register.
Rotary Sunrise Goals & Planning for 2014-2015
Submitted by Director Gina

A few weeks ago President-Elect Kim spoke about the Goal and Planning process for the new Rotary year. This year the process of providing District with our club's plans were different then in past years. All clubs in the District and Globally have been asked to input goals and service projects into the new Rotary Club Central website. This new method of entry not only helps with the information collection but it will help streamline the consistency of the data by all clubs.

Information about the planning and goals for Rotary Sunrise will be released in the new Rotary year in addition to more information about Rotary's Club Central website.
