January is
Rotary Awareness Month
Welcome to 2014 from DG Jeremy
Submitted by District Governor 7020 Jeremy Hurst
Dear fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors and Family of Rotary,
Michelle and I wish you, your families and loved ones, all the very best for a healthy, happy and prosperous 2014.
Fittingly, January is Awareness Month and as we start the second half of our Rotary year what better time for us to be aware of and reflect on the successes and challenges of the past six months and decide how we’re going to move forward over the next six with our family, professional and, of course, Rotary lives. Awareness can come on a lot of levels, but often its starts with being truthful with ourselves. In doing so we can ask ourselves questions like:
Have I been the Rotarian I could and should have been during the first six months of this Rotary year?
What can I do to make my club more effective and a better experience for all its members including myself?
Is my club truly aware of and meeting the most pressing needs of our communities?
Am I a fully “Engaged” Rotarian?
The great news is that having visited 65 of our 83 Rotary Clubs, District 7020 has some of the most vibrant and effective Rotary Clubs with passionate, dedicated Rotarians, in the Rotary World, delivering tremendous service to our communities and I personally would like to thank each and every one of you for the commitment and dedication you have shown in living our motto of “Service Above Self” throughout District 7020 over the past 6 months. This is something we can rightly be proud of and I have no doubt that generally we are a highly “Engaged District”.
So as we enter 2014, we need to ensure we build on this. Now is the time to work even harder to complete the tasks we set ourselves from the beginning of our New Rotary Year, last July, and in particular, over the next three months, let’s recommit to support our Presidents in achieving the goals they have set for our clubs and make sure we enjoy ourselves in the process! Perhaps the most important level of awareness we can have at this point therefore is that each of us can make a real difference if we re-engage ourselves in Rotary during 2014.
So let’s rise to this challenge and enjoy the rest of this Rotary year as we continued to “Engage Rotary - Change Lives”.
What the Prez Sez...
Sunrise 2014

New calendar years always signal fresh starts. We make resolutions to be better, do better, think better because each new calendar year brings with it a wave of hope and optimism.
So I think it was very wise of our Rotarian forefathers (because back then they were ALL male) to have the Rotary year straddle two calendar years, thereby giving us TWO New Years in a single Rotary term of office--one in July and another in January. Because as anyone who has ever made a New Year's resolution knows, the year never ends quite the way we imagine it will at the beginning.
Throughout 2013, the club met one surprise after another. Although some surprises were painful, many were absolutely joyful, such as the selection of our club's candidate for a Rotary Peace Fellowship, Danielle Coleman, our successful District Grant application that was used to further the goals of our LIFE initiative, and the wildly successful unification of all the island's service clubs with the Join In recycling initiative. And it is the joy of our successes that propels us confidently into 2014.
Some of the things we optimistically look forward to in this last half of this Rotary year include:
District Governor Jeremy Hurst's official visit -- 22 January 2014
Grand Cayman Bed Race to Conquer Polio -- February 2014
Rotary Leadership Institute training -- March 2014
Charter Night Celebration -- April 2014
District Conference -- May 2014
Rotary International Convention -- June 2014
A host of Community Service projects, including development of the nation's first wheelchair accessible beach
A host of Literacy projects, including International Literacy Month in March
A host of International Service projects, including a health mission to South America
A host of Youth Service projects, including our ongoing relationships with EarlyAct and Junior Achievement
Wow, such a lot to do in just 6 months!
So...let's tap into the optimism of this new calendar year, roll up our sleeves, and show the world what Sunrise Rotarians can accomplish as we make 2014 the best year ever for our club, our community, and our world.
New Year -- New Website/Bulletin Look
Submitted by Director Gina
With a New Year comes a new look and feel to the newsletter and the Rotary Sunrise website. Over the Christmas holidays there was much work taking place to set up the new templates with the Clubrunner Version 3.0. This means a number of changes to specific modules within the Clubrunner login but many are the same. You will find the clubrunner login at the most upper right side of the website.
There are still a few changes to be made to the main page but the basic functionality is there. There will continue to be some tweaks over the month of January as additional pages are designed so if you have some comments, suggestions or positive accolades then I want to hear them. Remember this is your newsletter and your club website so it is important to share your views. Contact gina@rotarysunrise.ky if you have comments to share.
This Week's Meeting: Club Forum Results

Following AG Joey’s resignation due to the extensive workload associated with his new position as MLA, I have great pleasure in announcing that Past President Eric Bush of the Grand Cayman Club will take over as Assistant Governor for the Cayman Island, effective January 1 2014.
I would like to both thank AG Joey for his support and success during his relatively short tenure and congratulate incoming AG Eric on his appointment. Please join me in welcoming Eric to the District 7020 leadership team as my new Assistant Governor for the Cayman Islands.
Announcement of District Governor 7020 Year 2016-2017
District Governor Jeremy Hurst recently shared the confirmation of District Governor for District 7020 serving year 2016-2017 will be Past Assistant Governor Haresh Ramchandani.
If you were actively voting in December (and we hope you were), you would have seen the tug of war between first and second place standings for Rotary International and Shriners Hospital. It was a close race with more than 600,000 votes casted amoung the two charitable organizations. But in the end Shriners Hospital did take the first place standing and Rotary International placed second. The top 10 charities will receive a share of the 10 million miles being awared by United Airlines.
