Rotary Sunrise has developed a list of tasks to be completed by newly inducted members as a way to help them get to know other members in the club and become familiar with Rotary protocols. Once all 7 required tasks have been completed the member will receive the club's Blue Badge replacing the Red Badge to symbolize the completion of all tasks.

Donation of Books to Eastern District Schools

With the generous donation of our community, Rotary Sunrise Club’s Literacy Committee raised just over $2,100 in March during our Buy a Kid a Book fundraiser. The books, valued at $700 for each school library, were donated to the government schools in the eastern districts of Grand Cayman.
At the former North Side Primary, recently renamed Edna M. Moyle Primary School, the books were received by Head Girl Jesse Ebanks and Head Boy Denton Powis. Principal, Marcia Rennie, had this to say: “Thanks once again to Rotary Sunrise for their generous donation of books. The students of North Side Primary, soon to be Edna M. Moyle Primary School, are very thankful and appreciative”.
Allison Wallace, Principal of East End Primary School, received the books on behalf of the students and Steve Smith, Deputy Principal of Clifton Hunter High School received the books on behalf of the students.
Rotary Sunrise’s Literacy Director, Andrea Bryan, commented that raising the level of literacy in schools throughout our islands is the club’s priority project and we constantly seek out ways in which we can accomplish this. We thank the public for their generous support and must also mention Books & Books for their most welcome 22% discount on the purchase.
What the Prez Sez...
Flags Over Sydney

I began this Rotary year determined to make it to Sydney Australia for RI's International Convention, which took place last week. I had even talked my best girlfriend from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania into taking the journey with me. It was a "done deal" and I was committed...
Unfortunately, life got in the way and finances didn't comply. So I spent last week soaking up as much information about the conference as possible from 9,075 miles away.
One of the pre-Convention events was a climb to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 340 Rotarians climbed to the top of the 440-foot structure, a 4-hour round-trip effort.
Once at the top, those Rotarians unfurled 278 flags from nations around the world in a symbol of unity. Even better, the climbers raised 110,000 Australian dollars (US$102,300), enough money to protect 240,000 children from polio.
When people wonder why they should go to the bother of travelling around the world to attend a Rotary International Convention, those kinds of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities come to mind.
Of course, not everyone gets the chance to participate in a record-breaking event at every International Convention.
But every single Rotarian DOES have an opportunity to meet like-minded people from other nations, who belong to clubs that Sunrise could partner with for matching-grants projects.
Every single Rotarian CAN use an International Convention to learn about the great ideas other clubs have executed to improve the world and then bring those ideas back to our club so that we can adapt them to make our club's efforts more effective.
And every single Rotarian who attends an International Convention WILL be re-invigorated by witnessing the vast numbers and diverse backgrounds of Rotarians from every corner of the globe who are dedicated to making the world a better place.
So, make plans now to attend the 2015 RI Convention in São Paulo, Brazil from June 7th to 10th. And the 2016 Convention in Seoul, Korea. And the 2017 Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
Be adventurous. Be invigorated. Be renewed.

Members have been asked to refrain from bringing casual guests to this week's meeting but please do invite them for next week.
Polio Eradication, It is Not Over Yet

How is the club doing with its fundraising for polio eradication? Well, actually very good.
Rotary expects each club to set its polio fundraising goals well in advance of the Rotary year, so early in 2013 we ambitiously set a goal of US$7,500, well before the membership declined. This became quite a challenge, especially as we only had raised US$ 1,500 by February. But then we had the Bedrace, the “This Close” photo opportunity at Casino Night, the Charter Night End Polio Now Painting Auction, the World Greatest Meal and signed poster auction at the district conference and last but not least the weekly collection jar for a couple of dollars from each member. And now our polio total for the year is US$ 6,500, so we made some US$ 5,000 in three months. Thank you Sunrise and thank you for all in the district who helped.
Our Board has decided to contribute the difference to meet our commitment of US$ 7,500. So our Rotary club lives up to its promise for this year!
Yes, it is in order to congratulate ourselves for our support for the Rotary Foundation. But the fight against polio is not over yet. Although the number of cases did decrease and fewer countries are endemic there is a worrying trend as polio is making a come-back and is being exported from endemic countries. The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency on Monday 5 May, a step they do not take lightly. If there is no continued focus to eradicate polio, the work of 25 years of polio vaccination may evaporate. Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon have recently allowed the virus to spread to Afghanistan, Iraq and Equitorial Guinea. Back to square one if we do not keep our eye on the ball.
Rotary remains committed, in fact very committed to polio eradication, so each club is asked to continue its efforts. The Sunrise leadership has agreed to kick off the next Rotary year with the World Greatest Meal at Change-Over Night on Saturday 28 June. The proceeds from raffle, auction and fines for that evening will go into our polio effort. So bring a couple of extra dollars to support Rotary.

Blood Donor Day - Sat., June 14

Every Rotarian, Rotaractor and Friends of Rotary are invited to come out to the George Town Hospital on Saturday, June 14 from 9am-noon to help promote the need to give blood. We had several members sign up at last week's meeting in addition to a number of Friends of Rotary. Whether you are:
already a regular blood donor
not sure if you are eligible to give blood
know you can't give blood but willing to support those who can
ready to become a regular donor
... come on out and meet up with our other Rotary Club family and the larger community to show your interest and support with World Blood Donor Day.
The staff at the blood bank will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the process. Plus with all these Rotarians in one place we will have a chance to have a little fellowship with one another. There will be snacks and drinks available too so come out any time between 9am to noon.
Local media will be covering the event, as well, tune into Daybreak on Friday, June 13 when members from the Blood Bank Services will be interviewed about World Blood Donor Day to encourage more donors to sign up and give blood on a regular basis. The Blood Bank is encouraging our Rotary and Rotaract clubs to wear their Rotary shirts and show how much Rotarians care about saving a life.

Spotts Newlands Park Repair & Beautification

Our next major Community Service hands on project is taking place on Saturday, June 21 from 8am to 11am then a barbecue Fellowship to follow from 11am to 2pm. This is your chance to roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and help improve our community with the beautification of our signature park. And after last week's sign up sheet we have had 18 members and guests register for this event. We will need a few more painters and gardeners to help with the repair and clean up but the fellowship barbecue is open to all who wish to attend.
Again the areas we are looking for support in these areas:
Painters for touching up building structures, benches, and picnic tables (brushes and paint will be supplied)
Gardeners for tree trimming and scrub pruning (bring what tools you have)
Light Carpenters/Handy Man types for cutting lumber and fixing weak or broken slats on benches and picnic tables (saw, screws, tape measure and tools will be supplied)
Sand Distributors for play ground area (sand will be supplied but shovels are welcomed)
General help for garbage pickup, gardening cuttings and leaf collection (gloves and garbage bags will be supplied)
Cooking help for Barbecue Fellowship (food preparation and cooking - utensils will be supplied)
Photographer to capture all the moments (must have your own camera)
A task sheet will be in circulation again this Wednesday for sign-up to these tasks and other duties. Please ensure you sign up so we can have a great turn out and enjoy the afternoon with our Sunrise Family.
Rotary Sunrise - Changeover Ceremony

This year's Rotary Sunrise Changeover Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 28 at Agua Restaurant & Lounge. Please join us for our annual celebration of another Rotary year and welcome our new year with the installation of our new President and Directors. The evening's festivities will commence at 6:30pm with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner at 7:00pm and official ceremony afterwards.
Tickets are CI$50 and will include a complementary glass of bubby during the reception followed by a 3 course meal with Agua signature dishes and a glass of red or white wine with dinner (note: menu may be subject to change).

Parent Testimony
Oprah Winfrey once said “I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”
With the above in mind, and on behalf of my husband, and son XXXXX, I would very much like to use this opportunity to thank you and your staff. Not only for the service provided in the recently concluded “Music and Creative Arts Camp” but also for the professionalism, care, and dignity in which the program was conducted. I am sure that other parents and guardians of the children who participated would agree that the summer camp was exceptional and provided the quality of atmosphere for the children to experience and find their own individuality. Ms Julie’s, personality and creative style was so warm and welcoming.
As a mother, and a very concerned parent, it is not easy to find others who are able to reach children that demand additional attention and XXXXX found the camp this year to be quite engaging and inspiring. The one thing that he spoke about a lot was the arts and how he was the banker in the drama presentation. I also believe he enjoyed that aspect of it because he is an outstanding math student. It was so inspiring to him he anticipated a return after the week concluded. I was very moved by the passion he displayed as he spoke about it. He explained each art piece he created (which is still on display on his bed room door) each piece seemed to have its own life and he eagerly explained all. I understood he had the most. Each day he seemed as animated as he explained his happenings of the day.
As a language challenged child, XXXXX often struggles to articulate his thoughts and feelings. But! He was so involved and passionate about this camp. He was clear in his recital of the day’s events and what he was involved in. I think it offered him a great deal of diversity and was able to help him build confidence in his articulation. Engaging with such a diverse and mature group of kids had a great impact on him. It was amazing what he took away in just a week’s time. Well done to you and your team for organizing a successful camp and we are already looking forward to next year. Thank you! Thank you!
Stargazing Fellowship

Who's up for an evening of stargazing with the Astronomical Society? Well, 21 club members and guests have answered YES to this question since June 5.
Your Fellowship Committee has confirmed Monday, June 30 at 7:30pm for the event. The venue is still to be determined but will most likely be at Pedro's Castle. The cost for the event will be a nominal $5 which is a donation to the Astronomical Society. More details will be revealed as they are known but register today for your seat under the stars.
A secondary invitation will be sent out after Wednesday's meeting so if you are interested please click on the ATTEND and answer the registration questions.
Medical Trip to Guaruma Project in Honduras

The International Service Committee is currently planning a trip to the Guaruma project in Honduras. On this visit, Dr. Mani will be continuing his eye examination clinic/followup and Dr. Uli Ecke has kindly offered to examine residents of the surrounding community for any ENT issues. Also committed to the trip are Dr. John Lee (pain management), Dr. Rachael Curtis (dentist) and Dr. Pavlov Rameau (who will be on hand to assist with any mathematical issues). We are encouraging any Sunrise Rotarian (and significant other) with an interest in assisting the doctors and/or visiting a project that Rotary Sunrise has supported for many years, to join us.
