All of the folks we sit with weekly have a story to tell, and it’s likely not going to be a story that will unfold in the 10 minute fellowship granted to us. Interesting bits about our buddies here at Sunrise Rotary will be, from time to time, something that our newsletter is going to help reveal to you. You’ll find our first interviews featuring Rotarian of the month Steven Sokohl.
Water and Sanitation Month
Water Woes When Water Goes
In the Cayman Islands we take fresh running water straight from the tap for granted. We assume we will all have working toilets in our homes. We are the lucky ones – even in developed countries such as the United States there are issues with water and sanitation – Flint, Michigan has been in the news recently. In many countries schools and healthcare facilities lack access to water and sanitation making basic hygiene impossible and increasing the likelihood of the spread of disease.
As we turn on our taps and flush our toilets here are a few facts to consider:
1 in 10 people lack access to safe water.
1 in 3 people lack access to a toilet – more people have a mobile phone than a toilet.
Women and children spend 125 million hours a day collecting water.
Every 90 seconds a child dies from a water related disease.
These are sobering facts – please do your part to conserve water and support Rotary water projects around the globe.
Visit www.rotary.org to see what projects need funding or sign up to donate to The Foundation and specify that your funds go directly to water related projects.
