   Christmas Barbecue

Our Christmas Barbecue was a relaxed affair for the sixty one attendees and six children who enjoyed food and fellowship at the Holiday Inn on Sunday.

Our musicians were: Fred Haas, saxophone; Sabrina Brown, vocals; Wil Steward, piano.  Fred is a distinguished senior lecturer at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.  He teaches saxophone, jazz piano, jazz improvisation, jazz history, and music theory.  Sabrina is an event planner based in Woodstock, Vermont. In 1996 Fred & Sabrina founded Interplay Jazz & Arts, an intensive holistic workshop in jazz that integrates yoga and meditation with the study of improvised music and other artistic disciplines (painting, drawing, creative writing, photography, film making).

Wil Steward is a local architect who has been dabbling in jazz piano & improvisation for many years. You may have heard him playing gigs around the island with his trio. He enjoys participating in the Interplay Jazz & Arts workshops yearly and has been responsible for organizing Interplay music workshops for Cayman high school students .

Rotarian Claude at last year's Windsor Park Celebration

December is the time of goodwill as many of us think of families and friends. We urge members of our club to take time to volunteer in the various Christmas parties around the island that are mentioned here. Give the gift of yourself this year! Sergeant Jerrell AKA Santasarg will be in attendance. Please sign up on Club Runner or with Secretary Hazel.
The schedules are as follows.

Friday Dec. 9 @ 6:30. Scranton Park.  Food and Drink served.
Saturday Dec 10 4:30 Windsor Park

In addition to Family Month, Rotary focuses on Disease Prevention Treatment in December. As we continue our plans to serve our community let us extend our impact to areas that need organizations like ours, and come together and do larger impact projects.

International Committee Update
from Committee Chair Pat Steward

During our last Rotary trip to Guaruma, their Technical Director (Ivin) indicated to Secretary Hazel that lecturers had not been receiving their monthly stipends in 2016 because they were out of funds.  As a result, all lecturers and staff at Guaruma have been working on a volunteer basis for the year.  Several of these young people have expressed a desire to continue with the project however are unable to do so without any form of income.

We have now reviewed our remaining budget and have determined that with a few changes and a small cash injection by VP John and me, we would be able to provide Guaruma with enough money to keep them going for another full year.

What this means to the ISC budget is that the funds we had earmarked for the Philippines school project will instead be directed to Guaruma.  We are currently involved in the Philippines Nanay Centre foundation grant that is forging ahead.  Nothing has been done pertaining to the school at this time and although we have committed to the project, I do not have a problem putting it on the back burner until next Rotary year.

Committee Chair Pat hopes to reallocate her remaining budget to Guaruma – which is basically to redirect $4,000 earmarked for the Philippines school – all other commitments of the ISC will be honoured.
