Invite a friend, family member, colleague to join Rotary.

Encourage Them to Be Part of Something GREAT!!!

Why wouldn’t you want them to be part of an organization that feeds the hungry, cures the sick, provides education to women and children, provides clean water and sanitation.   And now is taking on the environment.

The lunch meeting was called to order by President Darin Arrasmith at 12:33 pm.

INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT: Pat Hanley shared her thoughts about Jesse Jackson as we close out Black History Month. She was inspired by his call to unite over shared values and to avoid fear and division. Pat tied in how she was also inspired by former Police Chief Tim Hagel and his work with Safe Passage, as well as the work of Rotarians to unite and provide the hard work needed to make the world a better place. She closed her comments with Jesse Jackson’s clarion call to “Keep Hope Alive.”  Pat then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Marc Feigen and Trevor Tyloch teaming up to lead all in song with God Bless America (not “Tequila” as Trevor sung in Tijuana in January).

GUEST INTRODUCTIONS. Martin Anderson handled the introductions: Dr. Al Randle of the Eastvale Rotary Club and former member of the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks, Also, Anthony Linquata’s guest was Edgar Thatcher, Operations Director of Manna. ____________________________________________________________________

BLOOD DRIVE MARCH 26TH- CONTACT KEN WARNER TO REGISTER TO DONATE BLOOD
___________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
Announcements:

Pres. Darin reminded all of the upcoming Blood Drive and our Group 4 meeting next Thursday, March 5th.

Vicki Arndt talked about the upcoming Polio drive, specifically talking about the work of Ed Hager who donated $10,000 every year in this effort. Since his passing, every year ten Rotarians have stepped up to anonymously donate $1,000 and are collectively known as Ed’s Angels; in turn, Club Members are asked to come up with matching funds. While there are NO children currently in the World who are paralyzed with Polio, we cannot let up in the continuing fundraising efforts. The guest speaker in two weeks will focus on Rotary’s work to eradicate Polio, and to this end our goal will be to raise one more dollar than was raised last year.

HAPPY DOLLARS: Cup carried by Victor Hayek:

Jessica Sassalos was pleased to announce that her son’s school was hosting their annual Jog-a-Thon fundraiser the next day, where in the past they have raised thousands of dollars.

Michael Ladd had everyone join in and sing Happy Birthday to Vicki Arndt.

Christy Wilson was happy to give $5.00 for Vicki’s birthday, but not the dollar amount that would be equal to Vicki’s age of 60 something.

Edgar Thatcher took a moment to thank the Club for the Paul Harris Fellow recognition he received on February 12th as presented to him by Foundation chair, Laura Conway. He also made note how sneaky Anthony is, as Edgar did not know why Anthony had invited him to the 2/12 meeting. Edgar also remarked how speechless he was when he accepted the award and spotted Felix Masci who had been so instrumental in Manna’s early success.

Jody Wintermute was very thankful that her granddaughter was able to compete in equestrian events again so soon after just having major back surgery in November.

Trevor Tylock wished Vicki a Happy Birthday for “a lot of years”.

Michelle Nash asked all Past Presidents to stand as she said she was so happy to attend PELS training as our President-Elect, and also noted how great it was to see Immediate Past-President Pat McCoy there for his Assistant District Governor training.

Felix Masci was happy that he was not experiencing an earthquake earlier as it was merely Trevor shaking him from behind.

PROGRAM: Peace Building Committee Members, Michael Ladd and Christy Wilson.

Michael opened the program by emphasizing that peace is not merely the absence of
war or violence, but for example, can include the positive conditions that may reduce
hunger, homelessness, and domestic violence. He highlighted the Club’s local impact through initiatives
such as Harbor House sandwich making, support of Manna, the Chili Cook-off & Street Fair, the Storybook Project, and the Blood Drive.

Michael, in describing the term Positive Peace, among other things stated it as encompassing
1) a state of mind and society, 2) safety, security, & freedom, and 3) investment in education.
He concluded by stressing that peace does not occur by chance; as Rotarians, it begins with individual action and has the power to transform lives.

A video followed Michael’s presentation depicting the work of the Peace Center where
Peace Building has a role in creating Environments of Peace and Opportunities to Thrive.
A key message was to dispel the old notion that “if you want peace, prepare for war and
replace that with “IF YOU WANT PEACE, PREPARE FOR PEACE.”

Christy’s portion of the Program was to tell stories of some of her firsthand experiences.
Along with her husband, they opened an opioid treatment center in a disadvantaged area
of Sun Valley, where homelessness and incarceration were common. The generational
influences of mental & physical health problems trapped people in a subculture that often
shaped and limited personal identity within the community.

Christy guided the audience with three visual pictures that she called her PENNY STORIES – vignettes about a middle-aged homeless woman named Penny:

1) Penny had a huge heart but was the victim of predators. News of the deaths of her
husband & daughter while she was in prison led Penny to be suicidal. When she got out
of prison, she was living on the street by the parking lot next to Christy’s center. Penny
was living out of a shopping cart filled with trash bags and clothes. Christy recognized
that a goal for Penny was to get her stabilized – to make a bridge to her humanness
and reduce her disenfranchisement. When Penny was found to have emptied her
shopping cart in the parking lot by Christy’s center, Penny found great purpose in
meticulously putting all of her personal items back into the cart.

2) One day when Christy found a nickel on the ground by the Center’s front door,
she broke into the children’s song “My name is Michael, I found a nickel…” and much
to her surprise (and pleasure), Penny joined in song with Christy from across the
parking lot through several verses - this went on for a good while.

3) Penny could be complicated, but when you talked to her, she took you on a journey,
which you were required to let run its course. Christy recalled when she was closing up
for the day to leave and Penny remarked with conviction “Oh, you’re a REAL person.”
Christy knew that this was a clear reference to her having a real home with real food
and a real bed to go home to.

In summary, Christy said the purposes of the vignettes were to briefly illustrate the
sense of participation, joy, and value she received in observing and interacting with Penny,
and to show the best way to get there was through listening and recognition. Christy
hoped that the Club members in attendance “enjoyed the ride” as she told her stories.

Vicki Arndt in closing put in a request that more people serve on the Peace Committee
and that she looks forward to their next event, a BBQ in October.

Pres. Darin emphasized that the work of Peace Building can be a bright moment
for our Humanity.

Darin concluded the meeting at 1:27 pm by thanking all who attended.
