BECOMING A ROTARIAN IS A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE....

Invite a friend, family member, colleague to join Rotary.

Encourage Them to Be Part of Something GREAT!!!

Why wouldn’t you want them to be part of an organization that feeds the hungry, cures the sick, provides education to women and children, provides clean water and sanitation.   And now is taking on the environment.

The lunch meeting was held offsite at the Stagecoach Inn Museum and was called to
order by President Darin Arrasmith at 12:27 pm.

INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT: Keith Wintermute shared his thoughts on the fourth
question in the Rotary 4-Way Test: “Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”. Keith felt that this question is the most hopeful, as it inspires us to raise our eyes beyond ourselves, and widens our Circle of Good. Keith went on further to say that Rotary forces us to understand a different standard. Quoting John Kennedy who liked to say, “a rising tide lifts all boats,” Keith noted that this invites fellow Rotarians to be builders of trust, opportunity, hope, and life. In conclusion, he then quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. “What are you doing for others?”   He then led us with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Dr. Fred Lindberg leading us all in song with The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

GUESTS - Self introductions: 1) Nelson Buss’ guest was his wife Amy who was on Spring Break from teaching, 2) Sara Collins’ guest was Drew, her significant other, 3) Gary Siegel’s guest for the second straight week was his friend, Rocky.

Announcements:
Immediate Past-President Pat McCoy pointed out the flyer on all of the tables re: New West Symphony. The Symphony will be celebrating their 15th anniversary
with a concert on April 11th . They are looking for six volunteers to help with their
version of a “Petting Zoo” – where the public, both young & old, can see and touch a variety of musical instruments. These instruments are part of the program where they are delivered to area schools in the New West Symphony van that was partially funded
by our Club.

Vicki Arndt asked those that have made Polio Plus pledges to go online
to make payment, or to bring checks to our next Thursday meeting. Vicki also invited all to “please give, the need is great.

Pres. Darin shared Michelle Nash’s announcement that she is putting together her Allocations Committee and that we are always looking for innovative ideas to support those local Non-Profits who could benefit from our giving.

Program Speaker Board Member Nellie Cusworth
___________________________________________________
PROGRAM:  Nellie Cusworth, Board Member of the Museum Society, was the featured speaker for today’s program. She expressed appreciation for the Club’s long standing support and recognized the leadership of Past Presidents Neil Scribner and Richard Williams.

She also highlighted the upcoming August fundraiser commemorating the
100th anniversary of Jungleland.

In a previous presentation to our Club, Ms. Cusworth reviewed the early history of
Thousand Oaks. In review today, she noted its small population—approximately 2,000
residents—and its role in attracting Jungleland and Hollywood location filming. She
referenced early pioneer families, including the Newburys, Haigh/Hays, Borchards,
Crowleys, and Pedersons, and emphasized the considerable influence of the Janss
family, also known for their development of Westwood and Beverly Hills.

Today’s presentation focused on the transition from land speculation to the development of a “Real” community under the stewardship of Edwin Janss Jr. Key factors included the introduction of outside water sources and the opening & amp; subsequent acquisition of the Hill Canyon Wastewater Treatment Plant. The final pillar needed for growth was Access – this was facilitated through the extension of the 101 Freeway and the opening of the 23 Freeway (April 1970 saw the first car driving down the 23).

Following its incorporation in 1964, Thousand Oaks experienced steady population growth from the 1960s through the 1980s, accompanied by substantial residential construction, the locating of new & amp; existing businesses, and overall commercial development.

Ms. Cusworth concluded by heralding the community’s commitment to preserving the Conejo Valley’s heritage, while also citing the expansion of open space, parks, and
trails. She expressed special appreciation for CRPD, COSCA, and in particular, the
people of the area.

Pres. Darin concluded the official portion of the meeting at 1:07 pm, with a tour of the facilities afterward for those that wished to stay.
