PROGRAM: Nellie Cusworth, Board Member of the Museum Society, was the featured speaker for today’s program. She expressed appreciation for the Club’s long standing support and recognized the leadership of Past Presidents Neil Scribner and Richard Williams.
She also highlighted the upcoming August fundraiser commemorating the
100th anniversary of Jungleland.
In a previous presentation to our Club, Ms. Cusworth reviewed the early history of
Thousand Oaks. In review today, she noted its small population—approximately 2,000
residents—and its role in attracting Jungleland and Hollywood location filming. She
referenced early pioneer families, including the Newburys, Haigh/Hays, Borchards,
Crowleys, and Pedersons, and emphasized the considerable influence of the Janss
family, also known for their development of Westwood and Beverly Hills.
Today’s presentation focused on the transition from land speculation to the development of a “Real” community under the stewardship of Edwin Janss Jr. Key factors included the introduction of outside water sources and the opening & amp; subsequent acquisition of the Hill Canyon Wastewater Treatment Plant. The final pillar needed for growth was Access – this was facilitated through the extension of the 101 Freeway and the opening of the 23 Freeway (April 1970 saw the first car driving down the 23).
Following its incorporation in 1964, Thousand Oaks experienced steady population growth from the 1960s through the 1980s, accompanied by substantial residential construction, the locating of new & amp; existing businesses, and overall commercial development.
Ms. Cusworth concluded by heralding the community’s commitment to preserving the Conejo Valley’s heritage, while also citing the expansion of open space, parks, and
trails. She expressed special appreciation for CRPD, COSCA, and in particular, the
people of the area.
Pres. Darin concluded the official portion of the meeting at 1:07 pm, with a tour of the facilities afterward for those that wished to stay.
