BECOMING A ROTARIAN IS A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE....
Invite a friend, family member, colleague to join Rotary.
Encourage Them to Be Part of Something GREAT!!!
Why wouldn’t you want them to be part of an organization that feeds the hungry, cures the sick, provides education to women and children, provides clean water and sanitation. And now is taking on the environment. And have fun while were doing it!!!
President Michelle opened the meeting with a cheerful welcome to her Rotary family, friends, and guests. She shared some good news about the upcoming Street Fair, noting that the forecast is calling for temperatures in the 70s—a welcome relief from the intense heat we’ve experienced over the past several weeks.
Michelle reminded everyone that next Thursday, October 15, the club will not meet at Los Robles Greens. Instead, the meeting will be held at the Thousand Oaks Inn, where members will enjoy pizza from Pizza Cookery.
She then welcomed back Vicki Arndt, who has been out of town for the past several weeks. It was wonderful to have her back with the club!
Later on, in the program President Michelle wished Jessica Sassalos a Happy Birthday and then reminded everyone that Nate Harimoto said you have till the end of the month to submit your name for the next service animal the club is supporting. The name will be presented in November.
Inspirational Moment – Karen Furnari
Karen Furnari expressed her gratitude for everyone in the room and invited all members who have been with the club for less than a year to stand. She encouraged the newer members to get involved and take advantage of everything Rotary has to offer—from events and fundraisers to the fellowship and friendships that make our club so special. Her message was simple: the more you participate, the more you get out of Rotary, Be committed! Closing her thoughts with a simple "I love you all".
Song – God Bless America
Marc Fagan Feigen and Trevor Tylock came forward to lead the club in God Bless America. After a bit of friendly banter between the two, they got everyone singing along in a spirited moment of patriotism and fellowship.
Guest Introductions – Jim Friedl
Jim Friedel introduced the guests joining us for today’s meeting. They included Teresa Lallo, wife of Matt Lallo; Diane and Greg Pressman, guests of Michelle Nash; and Elena Escotto.
Guests attending the program included Marie and Marty Uskali, guests of Laura Conway. Susan Martus, a guest of Jessica Sassalos, was also in attendance, along with Rebecca Webb, Jessica’s best friend.
Visiting Rotarians – Keith Wintermute
Keith Wintermute introduced our visiting Rotarians, including Jack Jacobs from the Ojai Rotary Club and members of the Tijuana Rotary Club: David Cash, Gillardo Osuna, and Marie Fernandez. Danielle and Linda Wood, visiting from the Coronado Rotary Club, were also welcomed.
President Osuna of the Rotary Club of Tijuana expressed how proud and grateful he is for the longstanding relationship between the Rotary Club of Tijuana and the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks. He emphasized the immeasurable good that the two clubs have accomplished together through their grant partnerships.
The most recent grant, the third phase of support for the Castro Limón Children’s Cancer Hospital, will fund a new surgical room. This addition is expected to significantly expand the hospital’s capacity, increasing the number of surgeries it can perform from approximately 315 to more than 600—a remarkable impact on the children and families who depend on its care.
President Osuna also shared that his club recently held a PolioPlus breakfast, raising more than $25,000 to support Rotary’s global effort to eradicate polio.
Rotarian David Cash, the only American member of the Rotary Club of Tijuana, shared exciting personal news: this year, he expects to become a Mexican citizen, giving him dual citizenship in Mexico and the United States. David echoed President Osuna’s appreciation for the enduring partnership between our two clubs and all they have been able to accomplish together.
David also introduced a new opportunity for collaboration with the Ambar Center, an organization that helps children resist drugs and addiction. This could provide another meaningful way for our clubs to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Maria Fernandez, the Tijuana club’s Foundation Chair, reminded everyone about the upcoming humanitarian trip in January and expressed her hope that many Thousand Oaks Rotarians would join the experience.
David closed saying her remembered vividly his Grandfathers last words.....
Happy Dollars – Celebrating Our Members and Community
Christy Wilson carried the Happy Cup and kicked things off with $5 in Happy Dollars to welcome our guests from the Tijuana Rotary Club.
Trevor Tylock also contributed $5 to extend a warm welcome to our visiting Rotarians.
Jeff Borenstein shared that he would be missing the Street Fair this coming weekend, marking the first time in 27 years that he won’t be attending! While looking through some old items, he rediscovered his favorite trophy from the club: the memorable “Most Likely to Upset a Vendor” award he received for his Street Fair antics. A little Rotary history worth remembering!
Vicki Arndt said how wonderful it was to be back. She had been spending time at her home in Montana but declared that California is the best place to be and that she was delighted to return. Vicki also reminded members about the club’s annual humanitarian project with our sister club in Tijuana, scheduled for the third week of January. She encouraged everyone to mark their calendars and consider joining the trip, describing it as a fun, uplifting, and joyful experience.
Nelson Buss thanked everyone who participated in the Food Bank cleanup and refurbishment. He remarked on the amazing transformation and how wonderful the facility looked afterward. Members were encouraged to give everyone who helped a well-deserved round of applause for their hard work.
Michael Ladd contributed Happy Dollars in celebration of his 47th wedding anniversary with his wife, Julia. Congratulations to the happy couple on this wonderful milestone!
Herb Gooch contributed $5 in honor of President Michelle Nash and shared a Michelle-themed meme he had created and displayed on the projector, adding a little extra humor to the meeting.
Monica Murrietta reminded everyone that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She encouraged members who have not yet scheduled their mammograms to do so and urged them to remind their loved ones about the importance of screening.
Ken Warner contributed a Happy Dollar to highlight the upcoming blood drive on October 22. He invited Pat Hanley to share her experience registering online. Pat explained that registering earned her a $20 gift card and entered her into a drawing for a $10,000 giveaway sponsored by the blood bank. Ken encouraged everyone to register and participate in this worthwhile effort.
Jim Friedl reminded members that Charity Karaoke is happening this weekend. He shared that the Buss Family will be recognized at the event, representing the Conejo Recreation and Park District.
Laura Conway reported that a few seats were still available for Charity Karaoke. She contributed $20 in recognition of the 20 nonprofits participating in this year’s event. Laura also announced that Team Rotary has contributed a total of $2,543, with 18 Rotarians participating. A wonderful example of our club’s commitment to supporting local nonprofits!
Teresa Lallo contributed Happy Dollars in celebration of her husband, Matt Lallo, who will turn 88 next week. Happy birthday wishes to Matt!
Gary Siegel shared that he had not realized it was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and then revealed that his wife had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery this week, which went well. Gary also thanked President Michelle Nash for stopping by to visit and bringing a thoughtful gift. We send our warmest wishes to Gary and his wife as she continues her recovery.
Karen Albaum contributed a commemorative dollar for a friend who recently underwent breast cancer surgery. We wish her friend a smooth recovery as well.
Nancy Wohl thanked Larry Baker for bringing several of his Scouts to the pumpkin-decorating event held over the weekend. She praised Larry for being such an incredible mentor to generations of young people, both in the past and today.
Nancy also extended a heartfelt thank-you to Pat and Mary(Pat's daughter) Hanley, who supplied approximately 90% of the succulents used for the event’s arrangements. By trimming back plants throughout their entire backyard, they provided a wagonload of succulents that helped make the beautiful arrangements possible. Their generosity and effort were greatly appreciated!
Trevor Tylock took the reins as Fine Master and delivered a fast-and-furious session filled with funny sayings, jokes, and multiple-choice questions. The pace was so quick that keeping up with every question was a challenge! Members who answered incorrectly were fined $50, while those who got the answers right paid $20.
Here’s how our members fared:

She drew a meaningful connection between these everyday heroes and Rotarians who give generously to The Rotary Foundation.
Through their selfless contributions, Rotarians help fund important causes and make a difference in communities around the world. Twelve members were recognized for their continued generosity and support of the Foundation.

Laura Conway introduced the day’s guest speaker, Kyle Jorrey, Executive Director of Hospice of the Conejo. Before taking on this role, Kyle served as editor of the Thousand Oaks Acorn for 10 years.
Kyle began by expressing his gratitude to the Mighty Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks for its generosity over the years, having donated more than $100,000 to Hospice of the Conejo.
Founded in 1977, Hospice of the Conejo will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. The organization provides compassionate, nonmedical end-of-life support for people with terminal or life-limiting illnesses, as well as comfort and companionship for their family caregivers.
Much of this important work is carried out by dedicated volunteers who complete eight weeks of training, meeting two to three hours each week. Volunteers are then carefully matched with patients based on shared interests and beliefs, helping create meaningful connections during a difficult time.
Hospice of the Conejo is currently serving 31 clients and expects to have served more than 60 clients by the end of the year. Its services extend well beyond bedside companionship. The organization offers grief counseling through 11 weekly support groups, serving more than 150 participants. It also operates as a resource center, providing compassionate guidance, support, and referrals to other community resources.
Another valuable service is its medical equipment Lending Closet, where patients can borrow essential items such as walkers and wheelchairs completely free of charge.
Kyle highlighted SANO, a grief-support program serving underserved members of our community through the Westminster Free Clinic. This program is one of the services supported annually by a grant from the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks. The grant pays for Hospice of the Conejo's bi-lingual counselor who provides the weekly group.
He emphasized that all Hospice of the Conejo services are provided at no cost to those receiving them.
The presentation offered a meaningful reminder of how compassionate volunteers, community partnerships, and Rotary’s generosity can bring comfort, dignity, and support to individuals and families when they need it most.
To sustain its mission, the organization hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including the Turkey Day Dash, Festival of Trees, a tree-decorating contest, and a golf tournament. Kyle also announced that Hospice of the Conejo would participate in the weekend’s Charity Karaoke fundraiser.
That announcement led to a delightful surprise! Kyle introduced the organization’s Charity Karaoke performer, Melvis, who entered the room draping colorful scarves around the ladies’ necks. Melvis then invited Laura Conway to be serenaded and proceeded to perform for her in front of the entire club. The entertaining moment brought plenty of laughter and applause!
As the meeting drew to a close, President Osuna of the Rotary Club of Tijuana came forward to present a bottle of mezcal tequila to President Michelle Nash.
Michelle then invited Kyle to sign a book that will be donated to a Title I school in his honor as a guest speaker.
President Michelle concluded by thanking everyone who had contributed to making the program a success.
