PROGRAM: Haider Alawami introduced the speaker from the Surfrider Foundation of Ventura County- their Beach Cleanup Coordinator-Ally Alejo.
Ally started with the foundation's mission which is "dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches, for all people through a powerful activist network".
There are 200 charters across the U.S. and over 1,000,000 volunteers. Their main focus is plastic reduction. clean water and protecting the beaches.
The Ventura County chapter has 3 clean up projects each month. Also companies can sponsor another clean up to encourage their employees to participate.
Plastic pollution is everywhere and approx 11 million tons are dumped in the ocean every year.
Ventura County has cleaned up over 86,000 tons of plastic since their inception.
Their programs include- Blue Water Task Force, Ocean Friendly Gardens certifications, Ocean Friendly Restaurants certification, Hold on to your Butt (cigarette butts).
They recently finished a project to remove a sidewalk and parking lot on Surfrider beach in Ventura. This ensures the beach will be protected from erosion and saved for future generations to enjoy.
They have a lot of volunteer opportunities if anyone is interested, they can call Surfrider Foundation of Ventura County.
Pres Pat presented Ally with a book to sign that will be donated to a title one school in her honor.
