Encourage Them to Be Part of Something GREAT!!!
Why wouldn’t you want them to be part of an organization that feeds the hungry, cures the sick, provides education to women and children, provides clean water and sanitation. And now is taking on the environment.
The February 6th lunch meeting was called to order by President Pat McCoy at 12:25pm.
Ken Warner led all with the Pledge of Allegiance and Inspirational Moment, with Fred Lindberg leading us in song-God Bless America. Ken was inspired by world peace efforts, particularly in the Middle East with the release of the Israeli hostages. He looks forward to the day when there is no more war through the power of compassion.
Jeff Borenstein handled guest introductions: Keith Parks-Past President, Jim Brown-Past President from the Needham, Massachusetts Rotary Club, Herb Gooch’s guest was his former student, Chantelle Limon, Jeremy Paris’ guest was Ruben Maciel with the Police Charitable Fund, Michelle Nash’s guest was Teresa Horvet, who was checking us out so we needed to be on our best behavior, Matt Lallo’s guest was his wife Teresa, George Jones’ guests were his nephews, Dale Wilkie and Alan Jones, Regina Biddings-Muro’s guest was our Program speaker, Dr. IlenePinkard, and Kim DeBroux made sure that we knew that we had a special guest from Westlake Sunrise, Assistant Governor, Kim Mowder.
Laura Conway presented the following Paul Harris Fellows: 1) Louis Hirsch received his PHF+1 and PHF+2 pins with the intention of giving them away anonymously to two deserving recipients.
2) Michael Magasinn received his PHF+4 pin as he has reached the $5,000 donation level.
3) Ken Kossoff received his PHF+8 pin, which at $9000 in donations, is the highest level one can achieve before becoming a Major Donor.
Laura had another very special award to give – a Bequest Society Level 4 pin to Lee Ladd who has $100,000 in his estate to leave to Rotary. Lee had received a pin in 2004 for this achievement, but it was lost when his home was destroyed in the Woolsey Fire. In a special moment, his long-time friend, FelixMasci gave him his own Bequest Society pin as a replacement.
Pat brought up Kim Mowder from Westlake Sunrise. Kim shared the news that there will be 15 Rotarians visiting our area from Uganda (primarily all men) visiting the area this coming June, the 9th through the 15th. Word has been spread to four other area Clubs. She had some specific asks – first & foremost are housing hosts. Right now, she has found six folks who are willing to host and needs nine more. The prerequisites for hosting are an own bedroom & private access to a bathroom. Kim has set a deadline of February 15th to secure host families. Secondly, volunteer drivers are needed to take our visitors to various places of attraction such as the beach, Santa Barbara, and trips around LA. Third, folks are needed to host meals, such as a breakfast, a BBQ, or maybe a light dinner and/or cocktail hour. And there will be ample opportunity for all area Rotarians to attend events with our guests. Kim said there will be a flag exchange ceremony with the Uganda Rotarians at our Thursday meeting on June 12th. To offer your assistance in any of the areas mentioned, go to kmowder1214@gmail.com or call Kim at 502-435-0885.

PROGRAM:
Today the Thousand Oaks Rotary Club recognized February as Black History Month, Jeff Borenstein introduced the first of two speakers, attorney Vernelle Edwards. Ms. Edwards described growing up a preacher’s kid near Charleston, South Carolina. With numerous family members who were educators, nurses, professionals, etc., she knew she was going to college. When she went out into the world and saw so many young people growing up in Generational Poverty, she knew they needed help from others in the form of time and money. She specifically wanted to mention two individuals who rose up to greatness: Charles Drew who taught at Howard University, an HBCU, and who perfected the use of dried plasma, and Catherine Johnson, a mathematical genius portrayed in the movie Hidden Figures, who went on to a long career with NASA. None of this would have happened for either of these individuals without education. Ms. Edwards then went on to introduce Dr.Irene Pinkard, who had invited her to be a part of the Pinkard YouthInstitute.
Dr. Pinkard founded her institute with her husband because they felt that young people did not have good role models. Dr. Pinkard described three programs that were developed to for youths to see how others live: 1) They took eight students to Prairie View A&M in Texas, 2) Raised money for internships at various businesses to help kids get a job, 3) Developed an enrichment program for kids to stay on a college campus, specifically Cal State Channel Islands. Dr. Pinkard pointed to examples of two students who have gone through the programs, one who has a 3.8 GPA at CSUN, and another who is currently a college professor. She concluded by saying she saw a need in the community to be filled. At the conclusion of the program, President Pat had our two speakers sign a book to be donated to a Title One school.
President Pat presented the usual 'speaker gift'- a book that will be donated to a title one school in the speakers' honor.
