PROGRAM: Vicki Arndt introduced the guest speaker for the day. From Shelter Box- Senior Manager- Emily Harpin.
Emily started by saying this is Shelter Box's 25th Anniversary and over 3 million people in 100 countries have been helped. Shelter Box provides housing, household supplies, technical support and more to families that have been displaced due to natural disasters or conflicts.
There are currently 121 million people displaced around the world, and they estimate over 250 million by the year 2050.
Shelter Box provides various kinds of shelters depending on the region. "Emergency Shelters" are temporary and usually tents. "Durable Transitional Shelters" are more permanent and are made of more durable materials depending on the region (wood, metal, etc.). They encourage the people that are getting the shelters to help in the construction. That way they can fix any issues themselves going forward, and many at the same time are learning new skills they can use in the future. Shelter Box also partners with local organizations and agencies to take over going forward.
Pat ended the program by presenting Emily with our normal speaker gift- a book that she will sign and then be donated to a local title one school
He then ended by saying "If its Thursday, It's Rotary", "Remember the 4 Way Test", "Tell someone you love them, I love you all".
