President Michelle Nash presenting Blue Badge to Jodi Wintermute

________________________________________________________________________

Welcome — President Michelle

President Michelle welcomed everyone to the meeting and offered a heartfelt “thank you, thank you, thank you” to Felix Wang for hosting the club at the Thousand Oaks Inn and providing a generous Rotary discount for the fabulous meal served by the Pizza Cookery.

Michelle summed it up perfectly when she told Felix, “You truly bleed Rotary blue!”

Blue Badge Distribution:

Later on in the program Jodi Wintermute was recognized for completing all of her new member assignments and was awarded her official Thousand Oaks Rotary- Blue Badge by President Michelle.  Congratulations Jodi-  Great Job!!!

Inspirational Moment — Jeremy Paris

Jeremy Paris came forward to share the inspirational moment. Before beginning, he let everyone know that Jim Friedl had just called him from Los Robles Greens, wondering where everyone was! Jim had forgotten that the meeting location had been moved to the Thousand Oaks Inn. A little meeting-location mix-up gave everyone a smile!

Jeremy then shared a meaningful experience from 2008. At that time, he had four children, the oldest of whom was just ten years old. With the demands of family and everyday life, he was struggling a bit.

During that time, a gentleman gave a talk at Jeremy's church that included the following words:

“Never let a problem to be solved be more important than a person to be loved.”

Jeremy explained that this simple phrase made a tremendous difference in his life and the way he viewed others.

He also shared a quote attributed to William Shakespeare:

“They do not love that do not show their love.”

These words helped Jeremy recognize an important truth: showing love, caring for others, and putting people first are among the most important things we can do.

Thank you, Jeremy, for reminding us that people matter more than problems and that a little love can make a lasting difference.

Song — Nancy Wohl

Nancy Wohl led the club in a special song she wrote in honor of the upcoming Street Fair. What a wonderful way to build excitement for this community event and bring everyone together through music!

The Lyrics went like this: "Take me out to the Street Fair, Take me out to the crowd. Buy me some goodies and crafts to share. I wanna see all the fun that's out there. Let's stroll, stroll, stroll through the Street Fair, with music and treats everywhere.  Oh its fun to be on the street at the fair where neighbors meet."

Announcements:

Ken Warner reminded everyone that the next blood drive will take place on October 22 in the parking lot at Los Robles Greens from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Ken assured members that donating blood doesn’t hurt and reminded everyone that a simple donation could help save a life!

David Masci announced that next week’s Rotary meeting will feature Game Day, presented by the Degenerates. Vicki Arnt stood by his side and confirmed that the announcement was indeed correct!

President Michelle Nash announced that PRLS (Practical/Relevant Leadership Skills) will be held November 7–8 at the Cancer Support Community. This two-day class will run all day Saturday and for a half day on Sunday, with the club helping cover the costs. Michelle also generously offered to provide breakfast burritos for everyone attending.

Michelle reminded members that Nate Haramoto is still accepting entries for the Name That Dog contest supporting the K-9's for Warriors project. All entries must be submitted by the end of October. On November 12, a woman veteran and her dog will visit the club meeting, where the winning name will be drawn. Members were encouraged to submit their creative ideas!

Michelle then announced that Carol and Chet Shcrieber will once again be hosting the club's holiday party in their home on December 13th.  Carol is looking for a 'crew' to help.

She then wished Matt Lallo a Happy Birthday this coming Saturday.

She encouraged everyone to consider in participating in the Turkey Day Dash (on Thanksgiving).  She said it is a fun day and raises money for non-profits in our community.  It starts at 8:30 in the morning and you're finished by 10:30 and still time to participate in Thanksgiving with your families.

David Masci then talked about how the club does "Allocations each year".  The money raised from our fundraisers is handed out at the end of our fiscal year end.  In the years we do not have success with our fundraising, it can be challenging.  To alleviate that challenge the board is working with the TORF (Thousand Oaks Rotary Foundation) board.  TORF will guarantee an amount based on an average of the past 3 years raised.  That way the club's board knows exactly what they have to spend. He then thanked Darin Arrasmith and the TORF board for working out all of the details.

Michelle concluded the announcements by talking a bit about the club/district goals for the year.  She said she is excited about all that we are doing, and with a heartfelt reflection on Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self,” and the call to be “People of Action.” She shared how proud she is of everything the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks has accomplished so far. From painting projects and serving dinners to carving pumpkins, making sandwiches for those in need, cleaning our streets and arroyos, and preparing to distribute Halloween candy, members have been rolling up their sleeves and making a real difference in the community.

Michelle expressed her gratitude for the enthusiasm and dedication shown by club members and looked ahead with excitement, saying she knows 2027 will be just as inspiring!

Happy Dollars

The Happy Cup was carried by Laura Conway, accompanied by a very special guest, Roary the Rotary Bear!

Monica Murrieta contributed $5 in honor of Laura Conway and Charity Karaoke. Monica praised Laura for doing an incredible job and expressed her gratitude for the tremendous support her charity, Cancer Support Community, received at the event.

Karen Albaum added a dollar, saying, “Ditto what Monica said!”

Felix Masci contributed a happy dollar to wish Matt Lallo a happy birthday and got everyone to join in singing “Happy Birthday.” However, as it turned out, the birthday celebration was a little premature!

Jody Wintermute shared that she had enjoyed a wonderful Rotary weekend. It began Friday with hosting members of the Tijuana Rotary Club at her home, continued Saturday with the Thrive Grove home meal service, and wrapped up Sunday with Charity Karaoke. She described it as a fantastic weekend filled with Rotary fellowship and service.

Vicki Arndt contributed a happy dollar to welcome Keith Parks and thank Jim Friedel for finally showing up at the right place! She also thanked Michelle Nash and Mike Ladd for organizing the Thrive Grove meal event, calling it absolutely fabulous. Vicki said the experience truly demonstrated the heart of Rotary and the spirit behind everything the club does.

Martin Anderson made a generous $50 contribution and offered a friendly reminder to Felix Masci: if you’re going to wish someone a happy birthday, make sure you know the actual date! Matt Lallo’s birthday is not until the coming Saturday.

Martin also shared some big personal news. He recently sold the retail portion of his business and is now retired and living on a 'fixed income'. Although he admitted to experiencing a little withdrawal from no longer going to work, he is looking forward to facing this new chapter of life.

Michael Ladd added a happy dollar to say that the Thrive Grove meal experience was amazing. He was confident that the residents genuinely appreciated the Rotary members taking the time to be there and share a meal with them.

Louis Hirsch shared that he and his daughter were heading to Mexico City. He hadn’t visited in several years and was looking forward to returning.

Felix Wang thanked everyone for being there and participating in the meeting.

Marc Feigen thanked Laura Conway for allowing him to help with Charity Karaoke. He also reflected on what a generous and giving community we have.

Finally, Felix Masci shared another happy moment from his personal life. After living alone for the past couple of years, his grandson and his four-year-old great-granddaughter recently moved in with him. Felix is looking forward to having them in his home and enjoying this new chapter together.

Program & Fine Session

Street Fair Chair -Crystal Evans came forward to share an update about the Thousand Oaks Street Fair, combining her presentation with a fun, interactive fine session. Crystal put members to the test with a series of Street Fair trivia questions testing members on important safety procedures to ensure everyone is prepared for a safe and successful event.

Her first question went to Vicki Arndt: How many years has the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks been putting on the Street Fair? The correct answer was 34 years — and Vicki got it right! A great start to Crystal’s Street Fair challenge!

Darin Arrasmith was next up in Crystal’s Street Fair trivia challenge. He was asked about the fire permit and got the answer right! The members were keeping up with Crystal’s questions as the fine session continued.Crystal Evans, Street Fair Chair, continued

Karen Albaum was asked what to do in a life-threatening emergency. Her answer — call 911 — was correct!

Keith Parks was asked what information to provide when speaking with a 911 dispatcher. He correctly answered that members should identify the type of emergency and its location.

Larry Baker was asked what to do immediately after dialing 911. His correct response was to report the incident to the zone captain and call the security lead.

Paul Dryman was asked what actions should be taken depending on the type of emergency. He correctly identified the options: evacuate or shelter in place, depending on the situation.

Marc Feigen was asked what to do if required to shelter in place. His answer was to drop to the ground and try to get behind cover — another correct response!

Carol Schreiber was asked what to do when an evacuation is necessary. The correct answer was to exit the area quickly, remain calm, and avoid trampling others.

Finally, Nancy Wohl was asked where the onsite safety items could be found. She correctly identified the Rotary Center booth and the location on Moorpark Road just before Wilbur Road.

Crystal then continued by thanking all of the Street Fair sponsors and displaying slides recognizing each one. She highlighted Teresa’s Pet Supply as this year’s Title Sponsor.

She then reviewed several important Street Fair details. She encouraged Rotarians to distribute all of the coupon books at the fair and explained that the Kids Zone will be located in two separate areas this year. She also thanked Cherry Wang for organizing all the Rotarian assignments.

A few additional reminders followed: There will be no walkie-talkies this year, but printed maps will be available at the Rotary booth for anyone who needs one.

Next, Larry Baker came forward to discuss the vendors and the vendor map. He explained how the A, B, C, and D zones will be organized and reviewed the schedule. Everyone needs to be open and ready by 7:00 a.m. and off the street by 6:00 p.m., allowing the Boy Scouts to come through and pick up the trash.

David Masci then took the floor to explain the chalking duties used to mark and set up all the vendor booths.

To close the program, President Michelle Nash thanked Crystal Evans, Larry Baker, Sherry Wang, and the entire club for all their hard work and dedication in preparing for this major community event. With so many Rotarians pitching in, the Street Fair is shaping up to be another wonderful success!

See you all Sunday at the Street Fair!
