NEXT WEEK'S MEETING: ABC Restaurant (Aberdeen) at 7am for the AUGUST 5th meeting

Do you want to help MAKE DREAMS REAL?

Roger Perry, our District Governor, has some wonderful ideas on how you can do it.  His presentation to us at Tuesday's meeting was, frankly, inspirational!   He shared the vision of DK Lee, Rotary International President which is that "every child deserves a chance at a healthy life".   To this end, DK Lee has set 4 priorities for his presidency in 2008-2009:

  1. Reduction in child mortality: Polio Plus is making a difference!  In 1985 1000 children / day died of polio.  In 2007 1300 / YEAR died, and in 2008 so far 320 have died.  We're not there yet; Rotary's commitment to eradicate polio world-wide has taken on a greater emphasis with the announcement by Bill Gates of his matching $100 Million dollar commitment.  Each club needs to raise $1000/year for the next 3 years in order to meet the Gates challenge.
  2. Clean water
  3. Literacy
  4. Hunger

How can we make a difference? Pick one!

1)       District Simplified Grants: for community service projects; applications at www.rotary.org

2)       Rotary At Work: Saturday, April 25, 2009 - 60 Clubs in the District working on their individual Community Service Projects.  What will we do?

3)       World Community Service: Shelter Boxes - $1200 fills a box for a family of 10 with tent, sleeping bags, water, etc.  Shelter boxes are distributed worldwide wherever disaster strikes and usually weeks ahead of other disaster relief organizations.  Train as a team member?  It's possible!

4)       Group Study Exchange: Travel to Australia April / May 2009

5)       Ambassadorial Scholarship Students: one is studying at TRU now.  Who else do you know?

6)       World Peace Scholars: 2 year Masters degrees.  We have 2 students from our District who have been interviewed and recommended as WPS; they are awaiting Rotary International decisions

7)       Paul Harris Society: become a member when you contribute $1000 in a year to Rotary International

8)       Rotary Leadership Institute: become active as a leader in Rotary

9)       Club Visioning: where will our club be in 3-5 years?  What's coming?  What do we stand for?  Can we develop a 'Club Slogan' that will propel our work over the years?

10)    District Conference-Wheels in Action: Vernon, May 7-10, 2009.  Come and build a bird house/feeder to auction off, raising Polio Plus funds!  I think this is a competition, too . . . where will our club place?

Roger ended his presentation with these words: Have fun, get involved, do something!  Thank you, Roger for a wonderful breakfast meeting!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Project X: if you want to go to the Shakespeare in the Park (Prince Charles Park on Columbia Street, that is) on AUGUST 6 contact Kathy asap.  If we have 20 people going the tickets are only $10/each.

OKTOBERFEST: OCT 4, 2008:  The Leavenworth Get-Away basket is under construction!  Brad Blackburn, President of Leavenworth Rotary is working on a weekend package at Leavenworth (Bavarian village just across the border in Washington) in exchange for a weekend package at Sun Peaks.  Matt Muzzillo has agreed (with some not-so-subtle prompting from his mother) to pull together the Sun Peaks gifts to send down to Brad.  Thanks, Matt!

We need other items for the Leavenworth Get-Away basket (a gift certificate to Leavenworth services seems a little slim in its envelope).  What would work for this theme, folks who have been to Bavaria, any Oktoberfest, or Leavenworth itself?  Send your ideas / contributions to Marilyn asap, or bring them to any Rotary meeting!

A letter helping you explain why you're asking people for contributions to our Oktoberfest fundraiser will be out to you this weekend.  Sherry Chamberlain, Assistant DG has one that Rotary West has used in the past; we'll modify for our purposes and send along to all!

MEGA HOCKEY

Mike will have tickets ready for early August.  Please bring your ideas for a TARGET PROJECT for this fundraiser to the next meeting.  Selling is always easier when people know why they're buying!
