Kathy Rollheiser - The "L" Word

Literacy: "to read and write at a level that allows people to interact in society"

Most Canadians use literacy in workplace more than at home

22% of Canadians have serious issues; 24% grade 3 or below

Dyslexia - developmental (genetic) - a neurological problem that results in "an unexpected inability to read despite adequate instruction, motivation and intelligence."  Dyslexia is an under-activation of the 2 temporal systems in the back of the brain and an over-activation in the frontal system.  Dyslexia is hard-wired and does not go away with age or maturity.  After age 8 if a child is not reading they need 2 hours / day of instruction to catch up.  If child does not realize that words break into language by the middle of grade 1, they will not be good readers and will not be successful in school. People w/ dyslexia have average to above average intelligence and there is no correlation between being able to read and intelligence.

46% of Cdn prison population has poor literacy skills and a high percentage of them are believed to be dyslexic. 20% of the population in every country has dyslexia.
