At our Oct 9 meeting Dr. Bill Costerton of USC presented his research regarding the tar sands and the Athabasca River.  Contrary to popular opinion, Dr. Costerton discovered that the Athabasca contains bacteria that break down oil, resulting in clean water some 40 km downstream from the influx.

Far from being an "oil-sensitive river", the Athabasca is an "oil-eating river"!
