Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.

On Oct 25, 2020 the Rotary YEG Passport Club will be hosting a Walk to End Polio at William Hawrelark Park. Open to the public. Please register in advance to help us plan.

Rotarian John Vrolijk will be leading the walk. At an early age John was diagnosed with Polio, as part of his treatment he spent seven months in an iron lung. Once released, it was a “Rotary Ann” who drove John to his rehabilitation appointments miles away from his home. John story is one of inspiration and resilience, we are honoured to have him lead the walk and share his journey with us.
