NOTE - Next week’s (April 26th) Rotary meeting will be at the Brighton High School instead of meeting at the Brighton Community Center.  The meeting will be at the same time, just a different location.  Park in the back by the Fieldhouse and Pool.  There is an open parking lot by the Fieldhouse door.

PROGRAM/CLUB ASSEMBLY: Bill Gartley invited Anita Gibson, Vice President at Work Skills to provide the luncheon presentation

GUESTS:     Michael Griffith (week 3), Chris Spensley (week 2), Larry Pfeil (week 1), and Anita Gibson, today’s speaker.

TWO TRUTHS & A LIE:  Mike Hatty and Kim Leugers  presented this week.
Kim Leugers
1.  She held the longest record (5 years) for total purchases at a White Castle. She once bought 300 sliders at one time.  Boy, that’s a lot of indigestion.
2. She once worked at Meijer in the loss prevention department.  Once she initiated an investigation by collecting information on frequent department purchases in various stores where employees worked, employee schedules, etc.  She took that information and uploaded it to her brother’s Atari and tracked employees back 15 years.  Because of Kim’s tenacity, Meijer was able to prosecute an employee for embezzling $1,000,000.
3. For her wedding she booked the band, Tim Hunt and the Yankee Grey.  They were a country music band that formed in 1986 and toured the state of Ohio before being signed by Monument Records in 1999.  That same year they made their debut on the Billboard country music charts with the Top Ten single “All Things Considered”.
Kim’s lie was #1; she actually held the second largest purchase at a White Castle.  Mike Hatty guessed the lie.

Mike Hatty
1. During the winter of 1974, while in college, he had the opportunity to have dinner with Vice President Gerald Ford (Republican).
2. In 2006 while Mike’s brother was investigator for the law department for the City of Detroit, he was able to invite Mike to the Detroit Economic Club, where he had dinner with President George W. Bush (That’s another Republican).
3. In 2010 when President Obama was in Michigan at the Sterling Heights Stamping Plant, Mike was able    to have dinner with President Obama at the Macomb County Performing Arts Center.  (Finally a Democrat).
Mike’s lie was #3.   Mike Hatty has never met President Obama.  [Note to self – if you want to meet a Democrat, affiliate with the Republican party].  Kim was not able to spot his lie.

In two weeks (May 3rd), Ron Cleveland and Heather Bullion will present.  Since next Tuesday, April 26th we will take a field trip to Brighton High School, we will not have “Spot the Lie”.

PROGRAM:  Anita Gibson gave an overview of various programs at Work Skills, where she is a Vice President, and responsible for employment and residential services. Work Skills’ mission is to serve anyone facing a barrier (unemployed, underemployed, or with a disability).  Work Skills receives its only subsidiary from the United Way.  All other funding is by private donations.  The various Work Skills programs include:

Action Associates Staffing Services places individuals into the workforces of about 36 employers in community.  These individuals are able to earn a wage and contribute to the community.  About 300 people have been placed with employers.

Charter School - Work Skills also has a charter school in Ypsilanti for 9-12 grades.  The school guides at- risk students with disabilities.

Studio West supports the creative side of Work Skills and has a variety of art pieces created by the clients, which can be purchased by the community.

Action home health care provides compassionate in-home support to those faced with illness, recovery or diminished ability to care for themselves. Work Skills has assisted 68 people with home health services.

Residential services for Work Skills clients started in 2013 when a house was purchased in Howell.  The neighbors have been very welcoming. If these residential clients want to work, Work Skills has job coaches to help them get back into the workforce. The ultimate goal is to have clients get back to their homes, but while at the Work Skills residence, clients have their own bedroom and bathroom and share common areas. They average four residents per month. The first client took up residency in January 2015.  Eventually residents graduate from the resident home into their own apartment.  In a little over a year, Work Skills has successfully had four discharges back to private living environments.

Work Skills works closely with those individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries (auto accident, fall, military service, etc.). In United States someone suffers a traumatic brain injury every 23 seconds.  The biggest predictor of success for these clients is getting them employed.

Anita was very appreciative for the support of Women of Work Skills, Press & Argus, etc. and other community support.

Drawing:   Ron Cleveland, Anita Gibson, and Bill Anderson were unable to find the Ace of Spades.
