Barb McCririe, Bill's wife, is home from the hospital and in hospice care. Cards and greetings are welcome, but please call if you wish to visit.

American Red Cross representative April Gasbarre thanked the Club for its support of their efforts and recognized two Rotarians on their board:  Lori Lalama and Scott Griffith.  In addition, the Red Cross is hosting a "Something to Believe In" breakfast on May 12th at Oak Pointe Country Club from 7:30-8:30am .  All are invited to attend.

The Big Brother Big Sister Community Bowl event last weekend was a fundraising success, but according to Bill Anderson, "the bowling could have been better." Thank you for representing the Club!

Family of Rotary event will be held on Thursday, March 25th, at StoneFire Bistro.  Ten percent of the proceeds from all sales that day will go to the Brighton Rotary night.  Plan to meet your friends at approximately 5:00-5:30pm and enjoy a meal while earning money for the Club!

Piet Lindhout announced that he is placing the order for Raider logowear.  This is your last chance to order that Raider hat, sweatshirt or tee-shirt...

Rotary Raiders "Partners in Preparedness" gathered after the meeting today to meet with the Red Cross and learn about how our Club can help.  See Scott Griffith for more info.

LipStync, our next major fundraiser, is searching for sponsors for our May 22nd celebration.  Information sheets are available at the name tag table.

The Brighton Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA) is holding a fundraiser on March 30th at Bennigans in Howell-twenty percent of all sales will benefit the BCPA.

Collections for Cinderella's Closet continues as prom draws nearer.  Donations of dress clothing and shoes will continue for another week or two.  President Lori & Julie Blankenship modeled appropriate evening wear at today's meeting to remind the members to check their closets!

Jeremy Jones announce that area Rotary clubs are collecting warm weather clothing, light bedding, shoes, sandals, crutches, and walkers for people in Haiti.  Brian Donovan brought two large boxes to collect our donations They will be shipping items on April 1, so please bring some articles for donation the next 2weeks.

The Livingston County Literacy Coalition needs adult tutor volunteers.  Nancy Johnson will bring signup sheets next week for those who can help.

Scholarship Update:  Committee Chair Cathy Riesterer said that scholarship applications are at the high school and are due April 16th.  The Committee will meet on April 27th to determine which students to interview.

Program:

Rotarian Bill Anderson introduced Joyce Powers with presentations for the Brighton Area Women's History Roll of Honor.  Today marked the eighth annual celebration of Women's History Month at Rotary.  Past honorees include Club members Cindy Snyder, Melanie Moses, and Bonnie Corrigan.  The 2009 Honorees are:

  • Katherine Janego , Executive Director of Love, INC. a national non-profit organization that helps local churches help others.  Her certificate was presented by Nancy Fredenburg.
  • Phyllis Lyberg (1915-1972), one of thefounders of Rickett School .  Her award was accepted by longtime friend Phyllis Pearsall.
  • Doris Pitkin Hoadley , RN (1920-1972) a Brighton High School graduate and First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII.  The committee has been unable to find descendents or family of Ms. Hoadley so her certificate was presented to Marianna Bair to keep with the Brighton Historical Society.
  • Mildred Scranton , longtime secretary for Brighton Area Schools and known for her volunteer work within the community (also widow of former Brighton Rotarian Robert Scranton). Her certificate was presented by Peg Siford.
