PROGRAM
Piet Lindhout continued his photo report of the trip that he, Tom Coates and Mark Cook took to help build a school in the Amazon region of Peru where Cindy Snyder now lives. They were isolated, near the largest city in the world that you can’t drive to. While they were building, the Amazon was at record heights, with water seeping through the school floors that were already raised to avoid the river. The crew put a ceiling into the existing school room and built an adjoining kitchen with perhaps the region’s first gazebo vent to help deal with the smoke; they also built a banyo (sp?), which was a two-holer outhouse. The Adopt-a-School program is a joint project of the Detroit Zoological Society and its Peruvian partner, CONAPAC. Volunteers travel each year to the Amazon performing hands-on projects that meet the needs of students, teachers and classrooms. Next year’s project is April 9-18 and costs $1,250 which includes room, 3 meals a day, and a number of excursions.
