Two Truths & a Lie:  Two Rotarians will state two facts and one lie about themselves with the goal is to stump the other selected Rotarian.  This week, Vern Boyajian & Mike Bourke.
Mike’s
statements focused on his recent honeymoon:  1) spent a romantic day in bed, 2) woke up without clothes & a car 20 miles from hotel, 3) at one point, Peggi did not remember marrying Mike.  Vern chose the romantic day in bed as the lie and he was correct!  Vern’s statements focused on near-death experiences: 1) in college went parchute jumping and landed in a white pine tree, 2) a freighter almost collided with his sailboat while boating in Lake Michigan, 3) skied down from the mountain’s summit in Washington state.  Mike chose the mountain ski descent and was correct!
Next Week: Peggi Bourke and Mike McManus.

Past-President Peggi Bourke two outstanding awards:  Donna Craig received the Rotary Rising Star award and a certificate of recognition for the e-newsletter, and Ed Bottum received a certificate of recognition his program scheduling efforts.

Rotary Raiders have only 6 people registered for the August 19th United Way Day of Caring 32-ft ramp and many more volunteers are needed.  Register at http://www.lcdayofcaring.org/volunteers/ and list the group as Brighton Rotary.  Also, the Club is collecting personal care items to be distributed through the United Way—please remember your donations for the box!
Last week, the Brians (Donovan & Parsons) tackled a ramp with donated concrete from Livingston Concrete.  A 48-ft ramp is on the horizon beginning either 8/26 or 9/2—watch email for more details…

Family of Rotary lead Jason Huntly announced that only 7 spots remain for the Tigers Game on 8/21.  If interested, register on the BrightonRotary.com website or email Jason@archerhuntley.com.

Don’t forget the opportunity to raise funds for our projects at the targeted 9/19 grand opening of the Brighton Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park at the old Michaels location.  Sky Zone Owner Colleen Fitzgerald has pledged to donate half of the day’s ticket sales and all sponsor funds earned on 9/19/15 from 10am-11pm to the Brighton Rotary Club. Fliers and sponsorship information can be found at www.skyzone.com/brighton.

Mark Marker needs part-time or full-time help at his office (Vanguard Title).  Candidates need strong customer skills, and title, legal or real estate experience would be great.  Contact Mark if you or someone you know might be interested.

Piet Lindhout & Joe Bottum just returned from a week-long trip to Guatemala to help build a home.  Contact Piet or Ed Bottum if you are interested in having them present a program.

Mike McManus spoke about taking a risk and getting involved.  Kudos to Peggi for leading the Dash or Crash.  The Chatham, Ontario, Rotary Club just held a Beach Boys Concert and raised over $100,000—it was a major undertaking, but the rewards were fruitful.  When Rotarians get together and focus on a goal, we can do great things!
Upcoming Events:
08/19/15                                   Day of Caring Raiders Activities
08/21/15            5pm                 Bus Trip to Tigers Game vs. Texas Rangers

PROGRAM:
Program host Dennis Whitney, introduced Rotarians Tom Coates and Piet Lindhout to continue their presentation about a recent trip to Peru’s rainforest to construct a kitchen and distribute eyeglasses.  Centered near the Rio Napa and Amazon Rivers in an area called Nuevo San Juan del Amazonas was where the kitchen build occurred. The mission program was led by Brighton Rotarian Cindy Snyder and provided donated school supplies to almost 27 schools in the Amazon Rainforest. Cindy wanted to teach biology, conservation and ecology to the students and was told that if books were purchased for all subjects, biology, conservation and ecology could be taught.  The Brighton Rotary purchased enough books to supply the students of three schools. The children were very excited to receive their new books.  Some schools have dormitories for students that live too far from school, so that they spend two weeks at school and then two weeks at home (another group attends school while the one group is at home).  While crossing a suspension rope bridge 160-ft high at night, Tom’s flashlight died—not a fun journey across the rest of the bridge!  Piet and Tom were intrigued by the bridge’s construction and teased that the Raiders will now start building suspension bridges.  Other adventures involved shooting blowguns at a gringo target (drawn on a post) and Tom getting a Peruvian haircut at a combination gas station/barber shop.  The presentation will continue next week.

50/50 Drawing:  Thea Evers, Tom Zizka, and Sharon Zizka were unsuccessful in locating the Ace of Spades to with the jackpot.
