Announcements:

Gleaner’s this weekend from 9am-noon.

The Rotary theme for this year is “Engage Rotary: Change Lives” so President Mark would like to recognize the number of lives that Rotary and our Club Members affect/change the lives of others.  The Rotary Raiders changed the life of Candy Shoemaker, by building her a ramp last week. They even had several non-Rotarians helping on the build and it may be the fastest they have ever built a ramp!  Cathy Riesterer hosted a young woman from Haiti through her church and gave her a driving lesson.  April Dertian went to Triple R Ranch, which helps foster children.  Don’t forget to donate your change to our Pennies for Polio jug!

Rotary Raiders have a few projects on the horizon, including new windows, trim, and paint for the Brighton District Library’s children’s reading house.  Please see Brian Parsons if you’re interested in joining.  Piet Lindhout has signup sheets for United Way Day of Caring on August 21, as well as for several toys that need to be built for the Imagination Station.

Jane McManus announced that she is helping organize an Oktoberfest event at the Lingenfelter Car Collection on October 17 to raise money for the Veterans’ Memorial.

Our Club received a very nice letter from the Brighton District Library thanking us for the money we donated to their Light the Way Campaign.  There was a special shout out to Beth Walker and Dave Hartsook.

Jane McManus announced that she was at a zone meeting and received a lot of great information.

Nancy Johnson pointed out the article in the most recent district newsletter featuring Cindy Snyder.

Nancy Johnson announced an event this evening, which is a Broadway-style review in the Kerrytown district of Ann Arbor, to raise money for Room to Read.

We recognized Mike Archinal for appearing in the newspaper (again) – running this time!

Ron Cleveland donated money to the Brighton Rotary Foundation.  Thanks, Ron!

Rachele Evers thanked George Moses for helping make her look like a superhero.

Melanie Moses thanked Jason Huntley for putting together the wonderful Family of Rotary Tigers baseball outing.  Melanie also thanks the strangers who helped her find her Rotary pin at the game!

Mark Marker thanked Tom Coates for teaching him how to drill better holes (yes, really).

Brian Parsons is heading up our first Good Deed Doer Project (#1 of 6), so be ready next week!

Thanks to Jane McManus for helping Peggi Mintz with the semi-annual report.

If you haven’t paid your dues yet, please see Brian Wutz.

Brian Wutz (and your esteemed Rotary Spotlight Team) request that you please remember to sign in your guests, as well as make them a name badge and pay the $9 lunch fee.

Program: KATELYN REED, MS, TLLP – THRIVING MINDS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER – CHILDHOOD MENTAL/BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Stan Schafer introduced Katelyn Reed, a recent Eastern Michigan University grad who works at Thriving Minds Behavioral Health Center in Brighton.  Her presentation was entitled, “Childhood Mental/Behavioral Health.”  Katelyn discussed the different types of common childhood mental health diagnostic groups, including:  developmental disorders; mental retardations/cognitive impairments; anxiety disorders; mood disorders; disruptive behavior disorders; substance abuse disorders; eating disorders; and learning disorders.  Katelyn touched on the red flags that are common to helping diagnose these disorders and impairments.  We learned about several myths surrounding these issues and the facts clearing up each of these myths.  Katelyn also talked about the different treatments for these issues, including cognitive behavioral therapy and applied behavior analysis and behavior modification.

50/50 drawing:  No one won the jackpot, and Jim Barnas, Anne Belser and Piet Lindhout were unable to locate the Ace of Spades.
