Congratulations to Melanie Moses for attaining 24 years of perfect attendance, joining our Rotary Club on 7/27/1987!

A photo was circulated of Derek Smith’s wife reading to their two children the storybook version of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind that Nancy B. Johnson brought last week.

A thank-you note was received from James G. from Troop 350 for the $250 for earning his Eagle Scout status.

Dennis Whitney accompanied Jane & Mike McManus to the Saline Rotary Club and heard a presentation from ShelterBox (who would be interested in speaking to our Club if anyone needs a program…)

Jane McManus was invited and attended the Rotary Zone 28 & 29 meeting on Friday and will share activity updates at a future meeting.  Zone 28 reaches from Wisconsin to Canada and Pennsylvania.  Zone 29 (which includes our Club) has over 33,000 Rotary members.

Lunch and Learn participants this week Bill Gartley and Jeanne McMillan found they shared many things in common besides offices located in the same complex:  both have passions for their families, their chosen work, and service/giving back.  Bill trained as an electrical engineer when growing in Chicago, and joined Edward Jones in 1988.  Bill and wife Tina share 7 children, 11 grandchildren, and enjoy traveling.  Jeanne started in accounting at the age of 9, helping her Dad with his business, graduated from Western Michigan University and joined a Big-Eight accounting firm in Milwaukee.  She moved to Miami to become an auditor, and relocated back to Michigan to work in the private sector.  Jeanne has three boys, Josh (25yrs.), Jacob (23yrs.), and Max (17yrs).  Next week Lunch and Learn participants are Pam McConeghy and Mark Marker.

Tresurer Adrienne Knack said that our annual $574 dues for 2014-2015 can be paid now with invoices to be distributed next week.

“Top of the Mountain Dash or Crash” committee meeting will be held today after the formal meeting.  President Peggi apologized about people being assigned directly to committees, the goal was to take advantage of individual strengths, and would change committee responsibilities if someone wanted to switch--just let her know.

Livingston County “Day of Caring” on August 20th is fast approaching.  Our ramp build project will be at Peg Siford’s house on Devonshire.  You can volunteer by completing a paper volunteer form that Piet Lindhout brought to the meeting, or register at www.LCUnitedWay.org.  Those who volunteer soon will receive a t-shirt. Questions?  Contact Piet.

Jeanne McMillan proposes a quarterly adopt-a-nonprofit effort to have our Rotary team with another organization to help them complete one of their projects.  Jeanne’s idea was inspired by the Youth Connection group presentation.  A signup sheet for people interested in discussing such an effort and helping to get things organized was circulated at today’s meeting.

A limited number of tickets for the August 7th trip to see “Ernie” at the City Theatre in Detroit are still available..  If interested in joining the fun, either email Jason Huntley or sign up on www.brightonrotary.com.

Livingston Sunrise Rotary’s Bryan Bradford has tickets available for Le Concours de Livingston to benefit LOVE INC. on August 23rd at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Pinckney.  Tickets at $75 and if purchasing one of the 30 tickets Bryan holds, the ticket will be entered into a drawing for a Detroit Tiger Max Scherzer autographed baseball.  Committee meeting for the “Top of the Mountain Dash or Crash” will be held after today’s regular meeting.  More information can be found at www.leConcours.org

The Troy Rotary is hosting a lunch on August 20th with MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis speaking as a fundraiser.  George Moses will attend and is willing to share a ride.

PROGRAM:

Program Host Bill Anderson introduced Undersheriff Mike Murphy who spoke about the recommendations of the Jail Improvement Committee.  The renovations of the existing jail facilities will also address other needs including improved segregation of prisoner security classes, meeting jail design standards, technology improvements to allow video arrangements, a mobile command unit, and expansion of locker rooms.  Over half of the jail population comes from outside of Livingston County.  Currently, approximately two-thirds of the jail population is at medium security classification while the remaining are at maximum or minimum security clearances.  Alternate sentencing allows the flexibility to not have to imprison all that are arrested.  In 1971 the original jail had 63 beds.  In 1996, the jail was expanded to 205 beds.  In 2001, the jail grew to 254 beds, the current size.  The new expansion will add approximately 157 beds that will be primarily paid by a jail bond that replaces a current bond that is retiring.

50/50 Progressive Drawing:  Portia Davis-Mann, Jim Barnas, and Scott Spitler were unsuccessful at finding the Ace of Spades.
