Program:

Program Michael Bourke introduced Rafa de La Heras, exchange student from Aranda de Duero Spain and Michael Bourke, his son, who discussed the fun aspects of Rotary student exchange.

Rafa arrived in Detroit after a 15 hour flight from Madrid on June 26th.  He will be in Brighton for another two weeks before he and Michael return to his hometown of Aranda de Duero for Michael’s stay with Rafa’s family.  Rafa shared photos from his hometown and from a local Rotary meeting in which his father is a member.  Rafa has visited Chicago with the Bourkes and has been tubing, waterboarding, and learning about the American way of life.  Rafa and Michael were given Brighton Rotary flags to exchange.

Michael Bourke then discussed our Club’s involvement with Junior Achievement (JA) at St. Patricks Catholic School these past six years.  Each year approximately 220 students participating and our Club has invested over $15,000 for instructional materials.  Teachers have included Ron Cleveland, Mark Cook, Ron Hagan, Piet Lindhout, and Mike McManus.  The mission of  JA is “To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy,”  and their Pillars of Success include Work Readiness, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Literacy.  The 5th Grade class studies Our Nation; the 6th Grade class studies Global Marketplace, the 7th Grade class studies JA Economies for Success, and the 8th Grade class studies JA Personal Finance.  Your help is needed as teachers to keep this terrific program viable.  A minimum of six teachers are needed, the commitment is one hour of class each week for six weeks, with no more than one hour preparation each week.  Teaching can start in early January, but definitely by April.  To volunteer or learn more information, contact Mike Bourke.
