Announcements:

Our Write a Check campaign is on its way.  If you haven’t written your checks for $100 or more, please do so ASAP.

The Rotary Raiders are building a ramp on Saturday, May 31 in Howell.  The posts will go in the day before, so please contact Brian Donovan if you’re interested in helping. The Raiders also helped build the hummingbird garden at the Brighton District Library.  Thank you to everyone who helped.  The Library is having a volunteer appreciation on June 10 from 3:30-5pm.  Please RSVP if you’re interested in attending.  Lori Lalama still has Raiders gear for sale.

The Rotary theme for this year is “Engage Rotary: Change Lives” so President Mark would like to recognize the number of lives that Rotary and our Club Members affect/change the lives of others.  The WorkSkills golf outing was a success.  Thank you to everyone for your support!  Portia Davis-Mann thanked the anonymous Rotarian who donated bus tokens for a homeless student to get to and from work.  Our Youth Exchange raised enough funds for 7,000 doses of the polio vaccine.

Several of our Rotarians attended the District Conference on Mackinaw Island last weekend, including Mark Marker, Jane McManus, Mike McManus, Peggi Mintz, Mike Bourke, George Moses, Melanie Moses, and Kim Leugers.  The exchange students were inspiring and show us that Rotary has a great future ahead.  15 students attended the conference.  Among the speakers were a polio survivor and a Rotary Director, who spoke about how important individual clubs are.  There are many clubs that are struggling with numbers and getting younger members.  Remember that polio is just a plane ride away.  Additionally, our club received some awards, including for our Youth Exchange.  Our INTERACT club received a presidential citation.

The ACT/SAT practice test was a success.  We had one student sign up for the prep class.  Only 21 more registrations to go!

Madie Jones was accepted to the Stanford Summer Program for advanced high school students.  It is a $13,000 program and she received a $7,000 scholarship.  Thank you to those who helped raise money for her today.

Ron Hagen announced that the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation golf outing is on Monday, June 9 at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Pinckney.

On Thursday, May 22 at 4:00, there is a ribbon cutting at Main Crossing.

President’s Night is June 24.  There will not be a lunch meeting that day.

Program:

Program host, Rachele Evers, introduced Michelle Wilson, a mortgage expert. Michelle talked about two important mortgage programs that are always available.  The first is the Rural Development Program.  This allows people to buy a home without putting any money down.  It includes all of Livingston County (Brighton was grandfathered in).  There are both single family and commercial programs, which are evaluated on a case by case basis.  The restrictions of this program include that it must be in a rural area and you cannot have the money necessary for a down payment.  For more information, visit http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/.  The second program that Michelle discussed was the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) program.  This is a program run by the State of Michigan.  It is income-driven and is evaluated on a case by case basis.  It includes counseling, classes, and grants.  For more information, visit http://www.michigan.gov/mshdaMichelle also talked about tips for improving your credit rating and how important it is.

50/50 drawingJoe Petrucci, Kevin Brady, and the Rotary Raiders were all unsuccessful at finding the Ace of Spades.
