The Rotary Runners are gearing up for a run tonight at 5:15pm from the “Naked Guy”  statue at the Mill Pond..   See Greg Strouse or Mike Bourke for more information.

Program: CLUB ASSEMBLY

An additional family within the Brighton School District  is sought to host a Rotary Youth Exchange Student this coming school year:  Matias Esteban Jara Cantreras, “Matti” for short, is from Santiago, Chile.  He will be staying with the families of  Stan Schafer, Terry Gill, and Kelly Armistad..  Also, there is one male student for our Rotary District that still needs a placement.  If interested, see Cathy Riesterer.

Nancy B. Johnson gave an update of Literacy efforts within the community:  In the area of Print Literacy over $700 was raised during last weekend’s “Stroll Around Town” at the Brighton District Library to support early childhood literacy.  Visual Literacy involves helping students judge what is happening by what someone sees, such as what you learn at a theater.  Aural Literacy uses your ears and the oral tradition of telling folk stories to build understanding, such as with the Robin Hood-related topics at the Brighton District Library.  Digital Literacy involves competency with computers and several local cable companies have low-cost internet access for households with free, or reduced-fee student lunch recipients.

President Jane and Mike McManus will present a program about the Rotary International Conference during next week’s meeting.  The bounty from a banner exchange with many clubs was presented, including banners from Bankok, Korea, India, Sri Lanka, and Romania—the first e-club to be chartered via Skype!  The official banner for 2012-2013 includes the motto”Peace through Service.”  Mike spoke about how entrepreneurship was alive and strong in Thailand because there were no social programs, so everyone was trying to sell something.  People are looking for opportunities to improve themselves, and Mike is convinced that our literacy efforts will be the key.
