Program:

Program Host Beth Walker introduced Michelle Porter, DPT, from the Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists (MRS) of Brighton.  Dr. Porter is a co-owner of MRS Brighton, which provides services for orthopedic, neurological, and sports-related injuries, along with massage therapy.  After graduating from The University of Michigan with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy, Dr. Porter has worked in outpatient orthopedics and as director of a home and community-based facility that treated auto accident patients, especially spinal cord or traumatic brain injuries.  In addition, she has served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Michigan biology and physical therapy departments since 2003.  The discussion began with a quiz on ten common myths about back pain.  A key point to note is that back pain does not mean bed rest.  If you experience pain, remember RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, & Elevation) and eliminate the aggravating activity.  If you experience back pain, take control and do not just “settle” to living with pain—educate, act, and prevent.  Severe back pain does not mean disability:  pain and disability are subjective measures unique to each individual.  If you avoid all activity for long periods of time, deconditioning WILL result, which can result in increased pain!  Physical therapy provides specific exercises, body mechanics training, and manual therapies to help you heal.  Because you experience back pain does not necessarily mean surgery—only about ten percent of those with back pain eventually need surgery.  Being overweight can contribute to back pain.  Prevention relies on compliance with exercises and life style changes.
