News of Rotarians helping others: Mike Hatty thanked Scott Spitler for providing great care and assistance to Mike’s son-in-law with his pickup truck; Lori Lalama thanked Jerry Dunneback for his kind words to her husband, Mark, at the Knights of Columbus meeting.  Bill Metz saw Herb, a recent Raiders project recipient, who continued to sing the praises of the Raiders and how nice it is to access his new bathroom and ramp.  George Moses’ thank you card was circulated for the Tour de Livingston donations—great photo of George on his bike!

District Governor Elect Jim Gilmore presented President Pam and the Club certificates recognizing our Club’s participation in the OLSHA Walk for Warmth and our support over the years.

Assistant District Governor Brenda Ochodnicky brought greets from Coach Don and a reminder to save April 26th--27th to attend the District Conference at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester.  When a Rotarian registers for the conference, he/she will receive a lucky football for prizes during the conference.

Jane McManus has added more badges to the Paul Harris Fellows banner & it looks great!

Jane & Mike McManus attended the new Ann Arbor West Rotary Club meeting last night and encourages other members to attend the March 2nd Charter Club Night Dinner at Webers, cost is $30/person, and Jane would like to have a Brighton Rotary Table at the event.  See Jane if you can attend.

Special Olympics Polar Plunge is this Saturday, February 9th—Club members donated $400 last week to see Peggi Mintz take a dip into Leith Lake behind the high school and help her earn funds for Special Olympics!

The Livingston Sunrise Rotary’s “Midnight at the Tropics” last weekend sold 350 tickets plus others at the door that evening.  A fun event for all.

Cathy Riesterer announced that Rachele Evers has volunteered to be the third host family for next year’s foreign exchange student.  Should be a great experience for all!

Scholarship applications for the 2013 Anderson-McGregor Rotary Scholarships are available for download from the www.BrightonRotary.com website (under DOWNLOADS) or at the BHS Scholarship Page.  Please alert prospective recipients of this opportunity, noting that children and grandchildren of Brighton Rotary Club members are ineligible.  At least two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  See Beth Walker for more information.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bowling will be on March 9th and our Club will be represented by Peggi Mintz, Rachele Evers, Jeff Toole, Mitch Zoldowski & Bill Anderson.  Pledge forms were circulated to help the Brighton Rotary raise the most funds among Livingston County Rotary Clubs.

“Fans for a Cure” Pink Tie Extravaganza fundraiser for the 501(c)3 organization created by Cindy Lit of The Marketeer to help local families battle cancer expenses will be held on February 20th at Crystal Gardens.  More info can be obtained at info@fansforacure.org.

Anne Belser has tickets for the “Women Supporting Women Veterans” event on February 21st from 5:30-9:00pm.  Cost is $25 for adults & non-military, $10 for veterans & female military.  See Anne for tickets or info.

The St. George’s Food Pantry fundraiser is on March 15th at the Howell Knights of Columbus Hall.  (Yvonne Cavalli from the Food Pantry was our guest speaker on January 15th)  Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased from Anthony or by calling 810-360-0271.  Appetizers begin at 6pm, and dinner begins at 7pm.  Anthony’s business Simply Fresh Market will be providing and preparing all of the food for the event so that ticket sale proceeds can be used to purchase additional food for the Pantry.  Another example of Service Above Self!

The VINA Dental Auction fundraiser is scheduled for 6pm Saturday, March 16th at the Johnson Center.  Mike Hatty reminded the Club that several vacation options will be available at the live and silent auction.  Tickets are $75 per person, including dinner and music, and can be purchased at www.vinadental.org.

Rotary Moment: Piet Lindhout spoke about his first exposure to Rotary during elementary school.  One Saturday, his father invited Piet to join him on a trip to a large field in Livonia filled with tractors, earth-moving equipment, and people building a pavallion—the first phase of Rotary Park.  Piet decided from that point that Rotary meant Power Tools!!!!     Jim Barnes will share his thoughts next week.

Program:

Program Host Lori Lalama introduced April Dertian, Development Director for the Livingston county Salvation Army.  April assured the Club that the Salvation Army is more than the Thrift Store of a non-denominational church and that it provides basic human needs to Livingston county Residents.  April shared a video from  the 2013 Victory Luncheon discussing successes this year including increasing the number of Christmas volunteers from ten to 133, raising 7,000 toys for distribution at Christmas, and continuing the Summer Lunch Bunch to provide hot meals at least one day a week for area children.

 

50/50 drawing:  $1,135 jackpot in week 10 with 25 cards+1 joker remaining. Peggi Mintz drew the nine of Hearts, Kim Welsh drew the six of Clubs, and Jerry Dunneback drew the nine of Diamonds.
