Program host Bob Murray introduced Livingston County Prosecutor David Morris.  Dave’s father was a longtime Rotarian and often brought his son to various activities and meetings.  As the Prosecutor, Dave is the chief law enforcement officer for the county.  He handles all criminal and juvenile offenses in the county, along with abuse and neglect cases, and traffic cases.  To obtain a snapshot of crime in Livingston County, in 2009,  858 felonies and 2600 misdemeanors were charged.  In 2010, the felonies numbered 1100 and misdemeanors were 2500.  For abuse and neglect cases (many involve sexual assault, often with children under 13 years), 2009 had 42 cases, while 2010 had 69 cases.  Through the CARE program with LACASA, children that have been vandalized need only to be interviewed once by trained personnel, while other interested parties may watch behind a two-way mirror, thus reducing the trauma of re-living the incident for the child.  On the issue of crowded jail space in Michigan, Dave said that ten percent of convicted felons initially go to prison, and that number increases to 20 percent if those that violated parole are included, while nationally the average is forty percent.  One major issue demanding attention involves medical marijuana.  In 2008 the law was enacted, but it did not legalize the possession, use or transport of marijuana—it just allowed exceptions for those certified to need the substance for medical relief.  Currently, almost twenty percent of the certification cards are for cancer patients, while seventy percent is for chronic pain.

Progressive 50/50 Drawing $850 pot in week 9, 28 cards remain. Bill Metz drew the ten of clubs; John Nagle drew the ten of diamonds, and Jim Barnas drew the seven of diamonds.
