Announcements:

Birthdays celebrated this month with group singing following the nimble pianist fingers of President Pam:  Bill Metz (a young 70), Rachele Evers (on Dec 30th), Lori Lalama (a number with a seven); and Piet Lindhout (a number one year older than last year).
Happy Birthday!!

The Club’s “walking wounded” included Adrienne Knack recovering from 12/21 shoulder surgery and Brian Donovan with surgical repair to an earlier wrist/forearm injury.

Jane McManus presented a special Paul Harris pin to Piet Lindhout to replace the missing one that included the blue sapphire indicating Piet’s supreme dedication to Rotary.

Treasurer Peggi Mintz is collecting dues for the second half of our fiscal year and for the Write-A-Check campaign.  Please see Peggi if you have questions about your payment status.  Also note that she can accept credit card payments at our meetings!

Interact liaison Bill Gartley reported that when the Interact students called Mott Children’s Hospital about delivering the DVDs collected from the BHS drive, Mott was unable to accept the DVDs, but graciously accepted the cash donations--The collected DVDs were delivered to LACASA. Interact is also sponsoring a practice ACT on February 2nd with proceeds to benefit the Rotary Scholarship Fund.  Registration is available at the Brighton District Library until Jan 30th.

Michele Bouhana reminded the Club that we have been a strong partner with Gleaners Community Food Bank in the past and have demonstrated our commitment by volunteering the first Saturday of each month.  Embarrassingly, only Michele from our Club was present on January 5th to distribute food. As an apology to the staff at Gleaners, the Club collected $280 today to donate in retribution.

Also in relation to Gleaners, Bill Metz shared that the nine area dentists who collect fillings and byproducts of dental procedures had $24,000 to donate to Gleaners from refined metal that was matched by Wall-Mart to total $48,000 to battle hunger in Livingston County!

Rotary Moment: Jeff Toole needed about five minutes to share his Rotary Moments and, due to time constraints, he graciously agreed to share his thoughts next week.

Program:

To begin the year on a strong foundation, the induction of new member Mike Archinal, Genoa Township Supervisor, was celebrated.  Mike is a former member of the Brighton Rotary that had resigned due to other commitments.  Luckily for us, he returns after 14 years to add his talents and presence to our membership.  Mike’s return was sponsored by George Moses and Brian Donovan, and Membership Director Julie Fessler conducted the ceremony.  Mike is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, and ice hockey, and has a 15-year-old son.

Voting for the 2013-2014 Slate of Officers was held for the following positions:

Mark Marker, President; Peggi Mintz, President Elect/Secretary; Brian Wutz, Treasurer; Board of Directors:  Jim Barnas, Rachele Evers, Terry Gill (Partial—to complete Mark Sweatman’s term), Pam McConeghy, Past President, Piet Lindhout (2 yr term), Bill Markby (3 yr term), and Steve Belanger (3 yr term).  Write-in candidates were also accepted.

President Pam introduced Sue Urban, who has been working with our Club for several years encouraging hidden talents in the form of LIP STYNK performances.  Mark June 1, 2013, on your calendar for our next performance at the old Hartland High School!  LIIP STYNK is a show introduced to the Brighton Rotary by Anne Belser in which performers lip sync to famous songs with a Rotary twist provided by fantastic scenery and background vocal choreography.  Many hands are needed to make this performance a success, and acting is only one talent desired.  We will begin rehearsing/preparing for the show approximately 4-6 weeks before the performance, meeting about once a week for an hour or so.  This fund raiser will present about 10-12 skits of hilarious fun for both the audience & the performers.  Another memorable Rotary experience in the making!

50/50 drawing:  $425 jackpot in week 4 with 43 cards remaining.  Anne Belser drew the five of Spades,  Brian Wutz drew the four of Clubs, and Rachele Evers drew the ace of Diamonds.
