A Tribute to the Burlington Floods of 08/04/2014

 

With the current flooding, it’s worth taking a look back nearly 10 years ago to the infamous Burlington floods from the summer of 2014. Here is a news story about those floods. Some interesting facts:

 

• Current RCBL member Rick Goldring was mayor of Burlington at the time.

• RCBL donated significant money from Ribfest for disaster relief.

• People who dealt with insurance brokers had by far the best claims experience, according to insurance broker John Thorpe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

During the members-only portion of the meeting, the following motions were introduced and will be presented at the next two meetings: If you have questions bring them to the next two meetings or contact our Treasurer Marg.
 

• Motion to update Trust Indenture Document from June 30, 1972 to delete the purposes currently in Article 6 on page two of the Document and to replace them with the CRA approved purposes as follows”

  1. To receive and maintain a fund or funds and to apply all or part of the principal and income therefrom, from time to time, to qualified donees as defined in subsection 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada).

  2. To relieve poverty by providing basic amenities such as food, clothing, essential health care services, and other essential items to individuals and families in finance need.

  3. To do all such things as are ancillary and incidental to the attainment of the above charitable purpose.
      

• Motion to set aside funds for legal and other fees to bring the purposes up to date.

 

 

 

 

BGC Hamilton-Halton CEO Duane Dahl recently joined our club meeting to provide an insightful overview of the organization's pivotal role in supporting local youth and fostering a sense of belonging within the community

 

With approximately 4,000 members, the BGC Hamilton-Halton primarily serves children aged 7-14, offering universal access through an annual membership fee of just $5. Impressively, this fee can be waived, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder participation.

Located in the East End of Hamilton, the facility distinguishes itself from typical recreation centres by cultivating a strong community atmosphere. "Our focus is on creating a space where kids feel they belong," Dahl shared. "They engage in various activities, form lasting friendships, and often stay for extended periods."

 

Dahl emphasized the organization's commitment to providing a welcoming environment where children can explore their interests and grow holistically. This approach has proven successful in keeping kids engaged and fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their community.

 

During his presentation, Dahl expressed interest in exploring potential ideas and partnerships with RCBL members to enhance the organization's offerings further and reach. While he did not explicitly seek donations, he mentioned that those interested in contributing to the BGC Hamilton-Halton's mission could do so through their website: bgchh.com

 

Duane Dahl's visit underscored the significant impact BGC Hamilton-Halton has on the lives of its young members and highlighted the opportunities for our community to support and collaborate with this invaluable organization.
